    Have an avr 1710 somehow my cat got into my electrics cabinet and got water on the power board. Now only half of the board has power. Wish I had your skills. There goes my home stereo. I can't figure it out and you can't find a replacement board unless you pay 10 times the receiver's value. Just sucks..... Any idea where I can buy a power supply board?

    A Switching Mode Power Supply and Chinese caps all over the place, and one maybe thought that Harman-Kardon was a premium brand.

    My HK AVR 1005 came in for repairs yesterday, and man does it differ from this, for a change its heavy about 22lbs even tho it uses Class D digital AMPS so it has no big heat sink and stuff like this one , still its much better made . Only 2 bad thing about it , amp board is fried looks like , and it has no HDMI input , so.. but i can repair , and use optical for sound only , i dont need video .

    I've repaired a Harman Kardon AVR255, that had FL channel shorted output, and its working now with nice sound quality. But the FR channel does a swiching noise when selecting input souces ou shutting down the unit. Could you help on how to solve this issue?

    So I have an older AVR 247 and initially the RR surround channel was extremely quiet and it would never complete the auto speaker setup with the 30hz pink noise tone. I have just left that and used it with only the fronts, center and sub. I went back through the setup recently and now the RF channel has hardly any sound with the 30hz pink noise test tone. What could be the issue? I'm assuming the fets with those channels are going bad. Ironically enough, they are the very same transistors that you have here in this video. What do you think could be the issue? Thanks!

    • @luvradios
      @luvradios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually those transistors are darlington's but in your case the issue with the weak channels is most likely in the pre-amp or maybe on the DSP board. The AVR 247 has pre-amp jacks for all channels so run a line from the weak channels to another amp and see if the problems still exists, if so then you know the issue isnt in the main amp.

    • @360Diablosport
      @360Diablosport 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not 100% sure I'm following what your saying here... when you say run a line from the weak channels to another amp, what exactly do you mean? Could you be a little bit more descriptive. Thanks for responding!

    • @luvradios
      @luvradios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @360Diablosport ,look on the back of the receiver and you will see pre-amp out jacks for each channel, connect an rca cable to the jacks that are weak, then connect the other end to a different amp, this connection will bypass the amp in the receiver so you can eliminate it as the problem.

      @@luvradios So by doing this, I can isolate the amp and focus on the driver circuitry, is that the idea? Thanks for your help!

    • @luvradios
      @luvradios  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the unit had pre-outs for the amp channels then maybe, but this unit has none so if you unplug that connector you will kill the power supply for the amplifier which wont help you.

    I've tried on 3 occasions to get 3 different yamaha RX`s repaired and every time got a story about how they need to buy schematics and would cost the same to replace or needed a new main board and would cost the same to replace, and all with up front diagnosis fees and basically never got two of them back into my possession. • @luvradios

      A short on any channel will shut the entire amp down, all channels were checked during the repair.

      @@luvradios yeah that is what i thought as well . I ordered DPR 1005 , its a 2005 Surround Receiver , flashes the screen and turns down says the owner .
      So since im cheap and want something for PS4 surround sound , i got that , and will try to make it work .
      So we will see about that . I trust its a protection going on and that power is lacking , so its PSU fail, but still didnt look at it so we will see .

    Wow! A switch mode power supply!!!! Who on earth thought that this was a good idea? I have never seen this in an amplifier of what is supposed to be a good brand before, I personally wouldn't bother fixing this thing, I would do the world a favour and take it apart. There's a good reason why the older equipment is still around and that's because it's worth fixing. I would pull out the output stage and fit it in an aftermarket amplifier case along with a linear power supply and junk box the rest for spare components... It's really sad to think that my kids are going to be offered this sort of crap when they get older and decide to purchase an amplifier, I'm going to get a couple of amplifiers now while I still can pick and choose to store them for the future... Great job on the repair though 👍

    • @ri5ux435
      @ri5ux435 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'd be surprised how much cleaner power a *properly* designed switch mode power supply can produce. This unit isn't a great example of one of those power supplies unfortunately, but it's also not that bad. You should seriously look into modern switch mode power supplies; for example server power supplies with 80 plus platinum or titanium ratings. They have an incredible power factor at a minimum of 0.95 and excellent efficiency. There are also much more advanced switch mode controller IC's available today that have greatly reduced the switching noise in modern power supplies at lower current draws, which was previously the main concern of using SMPS in audio in the first place. Don't act like nothing made nowadays is superior. There's a lot of cheap implementations of technology out there, but there are also a lot of good implementations. Don't let the worst reflect everything.

    Is it normal for these transistors to heat up even with no signal and zero volume?

    • @luvradios
      @luvradios  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which transistors are you asking about? The output transistors will generate a minor amount of heat setting idle and the power supply transistors will also produce heat with no load.
