These videos are super valuable for us budget audio enthusiasts that might consider procuring used products. As a wayward tech with some training, not that I hardly ever use those decades-old skills meaning presently I'm virtually useless, these videos illustrate the quality of build, and more importantly the serviceability of candidate purchases. Thank you.

I really enjoyed your step by step trouble shooting and comments. Thank you for posting it! I also admire and commend your honesty toward the potential buyer. I've done many broken board/traces repairs over the years. Single sided are easy fix. Just use ROUNDED scalpel blade to scrap off the green paint from traces on both sides of each crack and bridge them one by one with copper or silver plated copper wire, never bridge them with solder alone. Really not a big deal even if it needs 30 bridges. You could drop super glue into the cracks, and also fix the cracked plastic under the knob with super glue. I have done over twenty repairs like that and not a single recall. I think it's worth it. I love the toroidal transformer in this unit.

Thank you. Saved my day. One of the fuses (6.3A 250V) were broken and there were no image on the display. Replaced it and display is working again!

I found an old harman kardon unit in a junk pile that was never going to work again, so I built another amp out of the parts, the transformer and heat sinks alone are well worth what you paid. It is a bummer, but I always look at these things as a learning experience. I look forward to more vids, keep smiling.

Agreed. I can’t bring myself to get rid of this amplifier so I’ll probably end up going through the trouble of repairing the board and broken traces. Watch out for a follow up video!

I revisited this unit again but decided it would be too much work to repair the board. With the number of broken traces, I’d likely fail anyway. I’m keeping it in case I come upon a spare board.

    Thanks for this video.
I own the same unit, purchased it in 2003.
Did some minor work on the front board. Changed fuse & Cap 10 years ago.
My only issue now is the Centre Channel making a distorted sound.
Unfortunately no one in Toronto is willing to venture into a unit like this.
Current I am using the surround back right to drive the centre speaker

He, no worries! you have the schamatics, you have the component - go and re-engineer the PCB.
Cannot be so difficult, its just a singlesided one. You can do it! :)

Excellent analysis and presentation. Sorry it turned out to be a terminal failure as I doubt a new board can be found. I have the same unit with the same symptoms and since it has never been moved, know that can't be my issue. If I can't find it maybe I'll donate the board!!

I still have one of these in my home theater. I bought it back in 2003. I now use it to power my four surround channels. It is paired with an Emotive 3 channel amp at 200wpc and connected to the front three channels. Mine has been in the same rack since 2004 and like new. The two of them together are around 120lbs.

@@quattropower34 No power? It's probably a fuse. I had the fuse problem two years ago. I removed the blown fuse and had to use a magnifying glass to read it but I was able to order a package of new ones from Amazon. I just checked my order history and I see that I ordered these. I (think) these were for the AVR 7200: 10pcs T10AL250V5x20mm 10A Slow-Blow Fuse 250V Glass Tube Fuse Time-delay Fuse
I retired mine last year because it didn't have the connections I need on the back. However, I may move it to my 2-channel system if I can connect a preamp or a phone preamp to it. It's like new and I think equivalent amps are probably $4k these days.

It would have made a good video having you make those bridges, kind of bummed you didn’t bring it back to life. Off the top of my head I can remember repairing two different integrated amplifiers with worse board damage from shipping. My customers bought them from ebay and the sellers did a poor job of wrapping them. I used a high quality super thin CA glue and impregnated the cracks down their entire length. Where there were no solder joints along the cracks I also laid down thin pieces of a woven fiberglass material and saturated it with the CA glue. I took my time and it looked very clean. There is no way they would continue growing. I then placed maybe 20-30 jumpers each, keeping them as short as possible. I told the customer that they should just consider them keepers or if they sell them in the future to make them local. I wouldn’t put them through shipping again. Anyways that was a few years back and one of them I haven’t heard back and can only assume it’s still working and the other, I’ve done several other repairs/restorations and he said he used it for about a year and then passed it to his son who uses it daily and still going strong. If you still have it, it would be cool to see you bring it back.

Hey everyone! I bought a 7300 recently for $50, and I realized why shortly after hooking it up ..it blew my speakers out after a while, because for some reason, out of nowhere, the volume will just start going up, and up..and up..very quickly going to max. ..and it has so much power..it blew my sub, and some other speakers I had hooked up to it. it works fine sometimes but you never know when it will just ramp up to max volume on its own! needless to say.. I'd like to fix it or it will keep blowing speakers up.
Can you give me any advice on what it might be or where to start?
I have no electrical knowledge of pcb's or components inside of a stereo.
I am comfortable with a soldering iron, but not sure how to test the unit or where to test in order to pinpoint this issue. Any help would be appreciated guys! thanks!

I have an AVR-7200 that shuts down anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes after turning it on. There are no speaker wiring shorts. It will act the same without anything hooked up. I replaced the AVR-7200 with four Crown XLS 1502's but I wouldn't mind getting the AVR-7200 repaired to use in the bedroom. And no, I won't sell it for forty bucks. :-)
All my caps have a black RTV-like substance holding them in place. At first, I thought they were leaking, then I noticed they were all like that. No leaks, just some type of "glue."

I, too, have this same problem. I have noticed that it is almost like Dolby Digital and Dolby PLII are in conflict. When there is a problem the PLII LED flickers. Sometimes it goes into protection and you can hear relay(s) toward the output side in the rear click. I can usually get it to work with some patience; otherwise, a system reset or two will generally get it going. Once going, it works fine. Next morning, probably have to do the same BS.
      Anyone have any insight.
I also have an AVR 7000 that works fine - but no front panel display, if anyone has run into that.
Both units and any attachments are protected by Panamax protectors and this didn't have the same time, so a surge is unlikely.

I have an HK AVR 225. I'm getting no sound to 2 NHT Bookshelf speakers. Not to familiar with these vintage models. Everything seems to powerup fine. No error messages etc etc. Amber light on power button is on. Have a Sammy Blu-ray Player with optical out into avr 225 to optical-in 1 input on back of receiver. Have HDMI from blu-ray to tv. Works fine. I'm thinking it is my input selections or maybe speaker wire. I'm at a loss. The left and right speaker icons are blinking in the little red squares. Any suggestions? Are my inputs correct? Should it be Dolby Prologic and DVD?

Oh, c`mon maaan... Single layer paper board with a few traces to bridge and you say you can`t trust it and too much work. I promise you, it will never crack any further. This is not a windshield. I understand you want to do a good clean repair, but i wouldn`t mind buying it if i know the PCB was cracked and bridged up. Its not a brand new unit you`re selling. Reduce the price a little bit and sell it "as is".
