I’m a veteran, and I can confirm that units do indeed steal shit when they lose stuff. It’s actually really bad, but I never had it happen with anything that would be anywhere near that important. As the saying goes “There’s only 1 thief, everyone else is just trying to get their stuff back!”
Stealing....Err...Acquiring supplies in the military really isn't hard. When I was in Iraq we needed fuel to go on this mission but the controlling unit of the base wouldn't give us any...So we just rolled up to the fueling spot and saw a bunch of filled jerry cans and we started loading then onto our truck. People looked over but we just waved and said hey how's it going and never broke stride. The key is to look like you are supposed to be there. If you are creeping up and looking all around it looks suspicious, crazy enough if you just roll up like you own the place and do your thing no one bats an eye.
When I was in Afghan we had our own company trucks for “more efficient resupplies” all us 03s would roll up to the fob one of us would fuck with the chow hall guys while the rest of us grabbed all the goodies from the conex boxes was great
Honestly - why do we not have a MOVIE based on these guys! Determination, skill, patriotism, and heroism leavened with borderline insanity, a healthy dose of insubordination, and outright theft and piracy! And an ending that would have you at the edge of your seat and tearing up due to onion ninjas!! You'd have the most AMERICAN GODDAMNED MOVIE EVER!!! And it would all be TRUE!!!
I wonder if it's not because of the DoD not wanting to help the movie in the ways they usually do help studios film propa-I mean patriotic films[that was a sarcastic propaganda joke]. Just on the surface the idea of a movie that celebrated rogues in the Army Air Force would inspire modern personnel to emulate their legendary levels of rogue-ish "orders reinterpretation?" I'm assuming, but also the fact it's a period historical piece and those aren't favored by many studios for the complexity of costumes, set design and production. A movie about the Triple-666 crew would be up there with movies we'd want to see produced. Like the story of Castle Itter at the end of the war.
This is true about the Navy Seabees. We have weapons, ammo, and construction equipment. NMCB 10. We were banned from Guam, all Air Force bases almost, and Camp Pendleton Marine base Clubs. Minor gun-fight. Marines going to the Brig.

I think the truth is we don’t know. We haven’t been tested as a whole since ww2. Korea Vietnam and the GWOT sure but that was a selected service and all volunteer military not the entire nation going to war. I think if we were tested, men who love this nation and believe in the Constitution would fight and die the same as those boys in the great wars
