    Erik, any time you want to geek out and share a new tool, and more significantly, your joy at having and using it, I'm here for it. No apology necessary. Sure we come for the woodworking, but we stay for the humanity and enthusiasm - and even the words that are hard - of the content creator. Keep it up.

    Eric, I know this is my3rd comment on this video but i think it's important for you to know that your insights on the aesthetics of a piece have truly helped me to look at what I'm building in a more complete light and given me an additional joy in the building process. Thank you.

    Honestly, although I have not had a splinter of wood under my fingernails for a while, I feel for you. I'm learning from you and along with you, from your ups and downs and your joys and pains. They are all grist to my mill, even the frustration of trying to find a quiet time during normal working hours to shoot your video was funny. It reminded me that the only good thing mentally about working unsocial hours was the quiet. The rest was a dumpster fire. Your videos are shaping how people will relate to woodworking through your content in so many positive ways. From your design and aesthetic choices, to your technical expertise, your work ethic, anf your humour, you're providing a deep well to draw from. Happy Birthday and many happy returns. Thank you for your work.

    Absolutely love, Love, LOVE Hearne Hardwoods! Rick, the owner, his family and everyone else who works there are awesome and the prices and selections are phenomenal! And it's only a few miles from the new bow shop we're building. I must say, I really appreciate the way you consider the minutia of the design layout. Getting grain and patterns to work in unison and complement the overall design. You didn't mention it in the video but the way the chevrons of the figure of the back panel are pointing up, will raise the eye upwards through the cabinet which will give a visual lift to the piece since I assume that this will be a floor cabinet i.e. a low set piece of furniture. As always, looking great 👍Oh, yeah. Glad I'm not the only one who nerds out over special new tools! Enjoy the new toy! 😁

    That panel looks fantastic in place. Keep doing what your doing, I'm enjoying watching the process. And that plane....DAaayyyuuum! Is that thing sweet. I could watch a 20 minute video of you just taking shavings from different species of wood and smiling and giggling as each one fluttered from your hands to the bench top. Just to add to the aura surrounding that plane, I'm stunned that that plane is machined so well out of Gidgee. I live north of Brisbane Australia and I have occasional access to Gidgee. It is that hard that it chips, snaps, breaks carbide turning bits. I'd no more work that stuff with hand tools than try working some basalt rock. Enjoy. You have an incredible tool.

    Those HNT Gordon planes are very nice aren't they. I have the medium shoulder plane and it's a wonderful plane. Wikipedia says that Gidgee is grown in arid or semi-arid areas of Australia (there's a crapton of places like that down here) so that would suggest that it's not a tropical hardwood.

    5:11 Happy Birthday! What I really wanted to say was “I hate you” (I love HNT Gordon, and I don’t own anything of Terry’s; nothing, which makes me sad). He won’t be on this planet forever. 😢

    Leave the solid panel. You nailed the book matches in the different compartments and you notice it right away. I think a frame and panel takes away more attention than it will add.

    As an Aussie, I wouldn’t describe Gidgee as a “Tropical Hardwood”. I would describe it as a desert hardwood.

      Interesting. I've never differentiated between the two but will consider that moving forward.

      @@ENCurtis Following retirement as a cabinetmaker/educator I’ve been road tripping Australia and camped under some Gidgee trees recently well below the tropic of Capricorn in Western Australia. Terry Gordon’s shoulder planes should be next on your list.

    What tape are you using on the veneer. Why are you using it? Tell me more about or do you have a video on it?

    • @ENCurtis
      @ENCurtis  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's veneer tape (also called gum tape). When pressing in a bag, blue tape can cause issues. Veneer tape is thinner and will release with water so avoids pulling up any fibers on the veneered face.

    5:44 how dare you, sir! Gidgee is much harder than Cocobolo. Cocobolo has a mean Janka hardness of 2960 while Gidgee is up at 4270. The cranky Australian timber makes Cocobolo look like soft pine. There is a reason that HNT Gordon offers HSS plane blades as an option - for people that would like to work this crazy wood. The only timber I know consistently harder than Gidgee is Waddy wood, which is export restricted because it is an Australian heritage wood treasured as early tools from the aboriginals

    Definitely agree with the choice to put that godawful angular mess against the wall 🤮 And good for you to treat yourself for your bday, I could tell it was going to cut like a dream after seeing that the blade came sharpened/pre-finished/refined? based reflections off the blade when you removed it from its baggie.
