I’ve found the S3 and Avid Control running on an iPad Pro with Avid Dock a good first step for hands-on mixing at a tenth of the budget of an S4. Once you can build an ROI model that makes sense for the business then I’d say make the switch to S4. As you summarized, time is money, so if the client base is there to justify the purchase and it helps grow the business, it makes sense. What screens are you using? Their dimensions are perfect for S4.

Great video! I am planning to purchase an S4 and have a question. How did you implement the four displays on the S4 console? What is the product and how did you arrange the screens with your Mac?
It's really an impressively functional arrangement that caught my eye as soon I saw this video. I also found your explanation of the bus versus track arrangement in your setup to very interesting AND I like using the blank section for the keyboard and mouse.
The screens are a standard 17 inch screen that will just plug into your macs thunderbolt port.

I use one everyday. S4 really is an overpriced plasticky controller with great spill and layouts sections. But otherwise you get 1 S6 fader on the main section, some buttons are blocked out of the box, the monitoring section makes no sense. It seems tat no sound engineer in activity was consulted for many features. For this price the level of frustration is at the top... but yes it works fine most of the time and gives you comfort. I wouldn't say it makes me save time though.
How did you mount the S4 to the legs? I thought the S4 was table top only?

What about compatibility with other DAWs? Is it compatible with others? Is the person who is asking the question using Avid/Protools, if it's not compatible?
It is compatible with other DAWs and other software not just protools. I use it instantly to control logic.

You would have to be a high pro level business with many clients and hundreds of thousands of business on the line. The Avid screen cost is why am will never go with Avid high end controllers they rip people off when it is not even necessary. My Dock and S3 can do amazing time saving functions without me paying out $30-50k for an S4 or S6. Buy one if you have the business to support the long hours.
100% agree with you. £6500 for a screen is a joke. I considered a Dock and 2 S1's instead but there were a few really good aspects of the S4 that the S1 couldn't do which results in a lot of time saved. But 100% agree if you aren't a business turning over serious money each year, it's really not worth it.
