This will be part of a larger video (or series) that will hopefully be uploaded within the next couple of weeks.
On May 31st, the Storm Prediction Center issued an enhanced risk for most of the Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky tri-state region. The main threats were damaging winds and very large hail. The tornado risk was only a marginal two percent, but a tornado couldn't be ruled out.
When I woke up that morning, I already noticed an organized group of strong storms in Illinois. Given its linear structure, I wasn't expecting tornadoes to form, but I still opted to try to chase them. Numerous counties near me sound the sirens for severe storms, and in Illinois there were blanket severe thunderstorm warnings being issued as the complex marched my way. My goal was to head down to Warrick County and record a Sentry, and maybe go elsewhere depending on the situation. Unfortunately, a warning was already issued before I got there, so I drove to Owensboro instead.
Owensboro only sounds their sirens for tornado warnings, but the sirens by the parks do sound for severe thunderstorms. They typically do an air horn blast and a voice announcement. When I got there, I was already too late. A new severe thunderstorm warning was issued before I even crossed into Kentucky but, I decided to continue onward. That was definitely a good decision. As I was getting photos and video of the approaching gust front, the sirens began to sound and this video came as a result.
There was no confirmed tornado with this warning. Just some weak rotation on radar and some intense straight line winds. NWS Paducah likes to err in the side of caution. When I finally had time to check radarscope, I couldn't find anything of interest. The main area of concern was north of my location, including parts of Spencer County, Indiana, where I just was at.

I vividly remember this.... I was in it. There was a Whelen 2905 outside our school. Everyone's phone went off. First, mine. I got up and showed it to a staff member at school. A couple moments later, the siren wailed into life as all hell broke loose, I promise you, it looked like a funnel cloud out those double doors. That was the day I thought I would see Jesus.
It was nuts out there. The initial gust front was crazy, blew my camera over at around 1:05. The camera angle at the beginning faces where the NWS placed the warning.

Nice! Love how cities up there are so consistent! If there’s a tornado warning near me most likely the sirens won’t sound, and I’m in DFW!!! It takes some major things to set ours off!
Wow that's crazy. Almost all sirens here are sounded for tornado warnings (confirmed or not). Some places even sound for severe thunderstorms.

It goes off everytime NWS issues/reissues[extends] the warning, as there is really no good way to know if it is from a old warning, or is new. so sound it off on each one.
By a tornado the signals can be unsended by the conection of the FSk
Lexington activates chimes for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, Tornado Watches, steady for Tornado Warnings, and wail other things like chemical spills. (it's all modulators and ultra voice controllers(they even have a new pre-recorded voice activation for thunderstorm warnings, unless the storm is really threatening, then they do voice with an actual person))

Gosh they must really want all sirens running! This is the first time I’ve ever saw dispatch send out the tones more than 3 times! Usually in tornado warnings dispatchers send out the tones 3 times at maximum
Well, yeah, most counties do that. They do that to ensure that the entire system is activated. My county does not do that, but I know that a lot of them do!
Oh, and by the way, you didn't see the dispatch do that! So quit telling lies... 🙄

I was raised in Owensboro and luckily no tornadoes occurred there as a youth, but the Friday test wails were always present.

Nice! My town has no sirens even though we got directly hit by tornadoes in 2 separate cells in 2011 and again in 2016 during Hurricane Matthew!
I'm guessing you're out by the East Coast? A lot of places around there don't have sirens.

sorry for late response but yes i live in southeastern North Carolina. Also add 5 tornado warnings during the tail end of hurricane florence for my town/county
Where I used to live, severe weather was a steady tone and the wailing tone like the one in the video was thankfully only heard during siren tests because that sound meant to get to shelter at once because nuclear attack was imminent.

Sirens of NE Ohio our town activates ours like 10 seconds after the warning is issued no tornado on the grown or with a tornado. Once the warnings issued the sirens start blaring

I remember a similar case happened here in Colorado but with a flooding back in 2013.
We have only one of these in my town. My town is full of Sentry 14V-Bs. I’m 1 mile away from one of them but the Whelen is 3 miles away and it sounds louder than the Sentry. They also do tests every week on a noon Wednesday and yet the Whelen is the only one I can hear than the Sentry. So it works very well I’d say.

Oh my, but in my opinion, Chicago under a Tornado Warning, (with it's sirens sounding in Alternate Wail), is still more scarier than this one in Daviess County, IN.
Yeah, that's hard to beat. Especially since some of their sirens do alternate wail. Very creepy.

or away from u, rmb this if the twister is lookin like its gettin larger & it aint movin side to side then its comin for u. if its shrinkin then its either weakening or goin away

No, they do that to ensure that all the sirens read the code correctly and are functioning properly. Basically, they do that to ensure that all the alarms are wailing like a fuckin' baby.

Hey, noticed that you have a Canon DSLR and was wondering what settings you use? I can’t get mine to take video that isn’t washed out anymore. Don’t know what the hell went wrong.
Usually my settings are going to be different depending on the environment I'm shooting in. Make sure your ISO is set to the lowest setting. Occasionally I've forgotten to change this. Another thing you can do is increase shutter speed, or adjust your aperture to a higher f stop. You can also buy an ND filter to cut down light. They're pretty cheap, and pretty useful too on bright days.
DSRX100 Might end up needing one of those filters. It’s mildly ridiculous, how easily it washes. Like, the only example I uploaded is a Little Giant... you can hardly see the siren. It’s bad.
