This was a good how-to. Can’t blame ‘em for trying to sell you on their products. For the flush, I’d just use tap water. Then refill permanently with distilled.

I totally agree, I think the ONLY TIME I'd use a garden hose is to blow out my radiator with the drain open and the bottom hose disconnected! I think the pressure would help clean the gunk out......but I'm not a mechanic, I just heard an old mechanic say this!

That flush does work good, but as a former srvc tech. I advise going on at least a 15-20 drive at high way speeds, to gain full advantage of the flush product, simply sitting with the engine running is not doing anything.

@shaocaholica they used a general motors vehicle which used dex-cool. this is gm's "own" coolant and shouldn't be mixed with traditional green.

I buy 100% coolant and use a gallon container and fill it half with coolant and half distilled water. Closest accuracy for a 50/50 mix.
Top of with coolant and fill resovore with coolant cause theirs still just water in the engine. It all works out pretty close to 50/50.

WARNING ⚠️ I used this product for a flush recently , let it go 3 days like the instructions say.... it ate up the seals on my thermostat housing, now I have to remove the entire intake manifold to change seals . 2008 Ford F-150 4.6..... so maybe if you just have to use it, only do the quick flush! Just a heads up maybe it’ll say somebody else some money because it’s costing me a lot of money

This is old, but I'm going to respond for new viewers. When you are doing this flush and filling with green on a dexcool system, you use a "universal" antifreeze that's compatible with dexcool. It's not the same as the original green stuff that causes dex cool to goop, but you should remove as much of the dex as possible anyway, if you are wanting to replace it with this prestone.

This is incomplete in that it doesn't mention backflushing the system by using Prestone's own "Flush N Fill" kit on the heater hose near the firewall. It's odd that they leave that out.
You can't "drain the entire cooling system" by just draining the radiator, especially if the thermostat is closed on a cooled-down engine. The same applies even if the thermostat is open (or removed) with the engine off and there's no water pump or garden hose pressure forcing out coolant against gravity.

    Ugghh...
For all of those complaining about color.
You never want to mix colors.. true. Diff chemicals MAY be inside.
Once the system has been completely flushed and "flushed with water" to ensure your sysyem has been rinsed of the old chemicals. You can use any color that is safe for engines. Including those heavy duty extended life ones used in diesels that run 1000 miles per day. As long as the bottle states safe for all engines.
As long as there is no mix of chemicals. Youre good.

Let me get this correct, since I'm doing this over the weekend.
Drain all coolant, add chemical cleaner & fill with garden hose, run or drive the vehicle for 10-15 minutes, let cool, drain again, if water is still dirty, repeat fill and drive and drain process until water is clear.
Then, add distilled water to flush out tap water contaminants, drive or idle for 10 or so minutes to get to operating temp, drain one last time. This shouldn't leave any tap water inside the radiator or engine?
Fill with 70/30 mix to hopefully come out to 50/50 mix, since there will still be some water in the engine.
Is there not a way to get all of the water out when draining?

Wrong... water cools far better than antifreeze as any race motor builder knows. You got it backwards; use 30:70 antifreeze to water if you live in warmer climates (personally I use 40:60 for a little better freeze protection and higher boiling point). The only places in the US that need 70:30 antifreeze to water would be North Dakota and Alaska!!!

  • @MikeWrenches
    @MikeWrenches 11 ปีที่แล้ว +10

As a mechanic I must say, this video is very incomplete and gets many things wrong. Vehicles won't have a degas tank and a radiator cap. Draining the radiator leaves much of the coolant untouched. Setting the heater to full and blower to max only slows down the warm up, set the blower to minimum, but this only apply to vehicles with a water valve on one of the heater hoses.. It wasn't back flushed like it should have been. You want to warm it up until the fan has cycled a few times. And more...
