We own a 2008 Aveo5 that we’ve owned since 2010 and it’s been a great little car. With 99k miles on it, the only things that have gone wrong are an oil leak that was an easily replaced gasket and a wire that shorted out on the A/C, a cheap, simple repair. Otherwise, it’s started every time without fail, has no creaks or rattles, and still feels solid. We’ve taken it to Canada, across the country, and on numerous other trips, and no complaints. We do have the base model and I do wish it did have cruise control for those boring long stretches. Overall, it filled our need for a cheap, basic car and has exceeded them. Not only has it been reliable, but it’s very roomy for my 6’5’’ frame and equally tall husband, has solid performance from the engine, the ride is well damped, NVH are pretty well hushed, offers a generous greenhouse with plenty of visibility, and the practicality of the cargo area offers a lot of space. I used to own a 2015 Honda Fit and it felt like a rough riding, sluggish, noisy, and cramped (in the front seats) penalty box compared to the Aveo. I even like the styling; it’s upright, chunky, and the interior has a funky, circular theme reminiscent of a Beetle or Mini. It’s not all perfect; the steering is pretty vague and that soft suspension does create some body roll in turns, the fuel economy could be better for a small car (we average 34mpg on highway runs), and the timing belts on these should be religiously replaced every 60k miles, as recommended in the owner’s manual. Before anyone dismisses me as some kook who never drives anything else; I’ve driven Tesla’s over a cumulative 25k miles for my job, desire to own a Chevy SS one day, and have driven hundreds of cars for fun or as rentals, plus own everything in size from a Daihatsu Charade to a Ford Explorer. But I appreciate the Aveo for what it is and it does its job very well as a dependable, honest to goodness, affordable runabout.
Hi Ryan, I know the post on your Aveo is three years old but just wanted to agree with you on GM Korea / Daewoo cars. Everyone hates on the Aveo but my friend had owned one for years. She loves it and so do I. I personally own a 2017 Chevrolet Spark base model, 5 speed manual. It’s one of my favorite cars that I’ve ever owned…and I am also a car enthusiast and former car dealer. I would echo all of the statements you made about your Aveo. They also apply to the Spark. The exception is the handling and chassis dynamics. The Spark has remarkable handling and an athletic ride for such an inexpensive car. Absolutely reminds me of my ‘86 CRX Si. I LOVE GM Korea / Daewoo cars like the Lanos, Suzuki Forenza, Aveo, Sonic, Spark, and others. I sold Daewoo cars back in the late 90’s new. I still see them running around Arizona with some frequency.
I have owned my aveo for about 4 months and it is exactly what it is. it's a first timers or commuter car. I am in the military and I love driving this car every morning to work. I am 6'2 and I fit very well inside with room to spare. As for the traction, road noise, and stopping distance, that was easily fixed by getting new tires. The tires that this car came with were complete crap.
I have to agree with a few other owners who posted here. This car has held up well all around for me. Surprisingly used ones are holding value, at least in southern California. It was made by Daewoo, not Diahatsu, in Korea.
The gap in quality between the old CAMI built Metro and this Korean built Aveo was huge. The Metro was a much better car built here in north America albiet at a slightly higher price. Most of the fellow Metro owners I knew drove them well beyond 200k with minimal drama. I have never seen or heard of an Aveo, 1st gen Spark (or any other Daewoo) lasting past 150-170k. Thank goodness GM paid attention to Quality when Daewoo was totally dissolved and the 2nd Gen Spark was introduced. Those cars are legit competition to the Japanese subcompacts
If this was my first car, I would have been ecstatic! Otherwise, this car is the definition of milquetoast...I had an Aveo for a few days as a rental in Florida many years ago. It worked, that's all I can say or remember about it. More recently, the Sonic I rented in South Carolina was MUCH better than the old Aveo a decade ago.
I disagree, from my experience the sonic is worse in reliability even though it's off the same platform of the aveo. The aveo has more get up and go (better acceleration) and better handling
@neostardust ..... and at that speed it was full of passengers, trunk fully loaded and A/C is turned-ON so what can I ask for more at this price segment?. I handle it smoothly during my daily commuting, no harsh or drag racing, no pushing the engine to the limits, having it serviced on schedule and it is serving me well so I am happy aith it. BUT, some guys are used to drive larger engines demand more power from such a small engine and thus pushing it to the limits causing troubles
It's also way better than the Aveo brand new. If you compared them right now, brand new Aveo (they don't make them anymore but if you had one) and a 98 corolla, you would pick the 98 corolla by a mile over a brand new Aveo.
Clearanceman2 Not necessarily,, Corolla is super reliable, but some who have owned this Gen have had issues with oil burning, which was not resolved until 2004, which is Gen 9. Gen 9 2005 (to be on the safe side)-2008 are the recent FWD Corollas to buy.
I had a 2000 Corolla and I can attest, mine burnt oil like it was gasoline. Burnt a quart every 300 miles. As one commenter posted, If I had a new Aveo put in front of me and a Corolla from 1998-2001, which would I take? I would take the new Aveo obviously.
It's all in what you compare it to. For the same price as a "Smart for 2," in the Aveo5 you get 2.5 times the interior and 10 more horses so you don't have to go home and get "the other car" for shopping. For about the same price as a Honda VTX 1300T, in the Aveo5 you get 300cc more engine, a roof and 4 wheels. They don't build Model T's, original Beetles, '79 Civics or Datsun 1200's any more and Tata Nano's won't be showing up here any time soon, so the Aveo5 is what I got and I like it.
the 2002-2011 Chevrolet Aveo is assembled in China: Shanghai Colombia: Bogotá Ecuador: Quito India: Halol Kazakhstan: Ust-Kamenogorsk Mexico: San Luis Potosí Poland: Warsaw South Korea: Bupyong Thailand: Rayong Ukraine: Zaporizhia Vietnam: Hanoi
People like to judge quick on chevrolets, but the aveo is Ideal for 1st time insurers and quite fancy for a first car. I think your not to badly off driving these but when you first past your test you forget the scraps you would of driven
Yeah, we don't desire that kind of spending on any car. I have a 92 VW GTI 16v that I would not trade for anything. Granted, I never "need" a car anymore where we moved. Wife has a Forester, base model with a few options. We looked at the Turbo, but did not really need it, and instead of 18k (after 2 hrs negotiating), it was 23k. I am sure a down payment on a home Impreza would be fun though ;)
Anyone who pays over 10k did not bargain enough at the dealer.. We bought a new Subaru Forester for 18k. They are MSRPed at over 22 grand. It means nothing. We technically went below invoice, dipping into the holdback money that the manufacture would be giving the dealer upon it's sell.
With respect, I know you didn't "say" race but your words imply it like "0-60 in 12 secs". Where I live; in Amman-Jordan; is full of ups & downs, hills, stop & go among all kinds of road conditions. I find driving my Aveo (1.4L automatic) is no issue and it can handle them decently. It can cope with the traffic on highway easily. I drove it for more than 300km/hr highway at a speed of ~120km/hr without pushing the pedal all the way .....
Yeah, they added a ton of electronic shit to cars to jack up the price. OOOOH shiny. It worked really well now people think they can't drive without auto braking and blind spot monitoring BS, back up cameras, etc. People that market new cars are the best in their field. I swear they could sell sand to a guy living in a desert.
Actually, without options... these Aveo's were a mere $6750 with incentives. That was a sensible buy. $9000 with AC and a radio. That's ALL someone should get in this type of car. It is an econo car. Crap, you could get a new super well equipped AWD Subaru Impreza for 17k!
I'm surprised how much new car prices in this segment have gone up. This car was around $13K in 2008. Today, a similar car would cost around $15 or 16K. Oy!
Rented one a couple months back in New Mexico. Drove several hundred miles around the state and had no problems cruising at 75-80. Good A/C, comfort, quiet ride. Cons: Miserable suspension and gets blown around in the wind. Buy one used, they depreciate like crazy!
To add: No ONE should order one of these so fully equipped! It is an economy car. it should be packaged like one! Buy another segment if you need power windows, locks, cruise, leatherette seats, fancy wheels, etc. You will pay 14k for a Hyundai Elantra with all the options available. A MUCH nicer car! Get an Aveo with nothing buy AC. Pay under $9500. Just learn to bargain.
I had to rent one when my car got totalled. I was lucky enough to get a 14 year old accord after that and it was like a dream compared to the brand new Aveo. If you think they aren't completely awful, you either haven't driven many cars or you don't notice anything about what you drive other than it gets you to your destination. That's possible, there are people that just drive and don't notice much about the car. And that's OK.
@@Clearanceman2 I've driven everything from a Yugo (not mine) to a $150k Range Rover (not mine). I have probably forgotten more about cars than you know. I currently own an older Range Rover, a 2019 Silverado, and just bought a 2009 Aveo to zip around town in.

@neostardust Why don't you buy a $150'000 Porche instead if you want to race instead of a small $12'000 Aveo. It is strange how you people think. I own a 2009 Aveo for the 3rd year now and it is a nice car & fun to drive in city... ofcourse I don't try to race with it cause it is not meant to be. period.

I really love that interior. It looks classy and upscale, which is very hard to find in US sold subcompacts. Too bad it's wrapped in an ugly, cheap looking exterior.
Pretty horrible fuel economy given the engine specs. I've got a 2018 impala that gets almost 30mpg highway with 3 times the power and seats 5 adults comfortably
I'm buying my first car and one of the dealer's that I went to has this car, used, for just under 5k. It only has 39k miles on it and it seems to be in great shape. But, I've heard from many people that it's not a good car. I'm just wondering what other, more knowledgeable people, had to say. I'm only looking for something that can take me from point A to point B and back with no hassle. Also, it's pretty important that it can handle a 250 mile trip every once in a while.
Our 2008 Aveo has 99k miles and has been troublefree for the most part. In eight years of ownership, we’ve only had a shorted A/C wire and a recent oil leak that was quickly repaired. It is important to remember to replace the timing belt at 60k miles, about a $700 job at a mechanic, as these belts are notorious for snapping if ignored
Compared to cars today you can get for just a little bitty more money this thing is a POS. Maybe good for its time but it shows you how far the market has come
WOO HOOO!!! You finally realize that you were in a hurry.... hence why I told you to "take your time and check your spelling". Can you read AND comprehend that? I am beginning to wonder!
I usually can't find fault with newer GM's but this car is one of the worst cars I've ever test driven. I drove the 5 speed. The shifter was unrefined and the throw was too long. Its gearing is was too long given the engines torque requiring a downshift to 2nd even when carrying speed into a 90 degree right hand turn. I tried third but it bogged horribly. GM really could have done better with this car, they can start by getting rid of that stupid vent and those awful rear lights.
wow this car performs horribly...they need better braking power...and yeah 11.8 seconds to 60 is an eternity =( the cost for this car is cheap and so is the look. if you're in a budget i guess this is an ok car.
this vehicle is mechanic special dream weak head gaskets weak thermostat housing shitty front ends horrible car so fuckin bad my friends going through hell with this car
GM sucks! This car gets only about 25 mpg's in the city and 0-60 time 11.8 secs! That is terrible! My stock 17 year old 92 civic vx would smoke the shitty aveo in acceleration, gets double the gas milage, and reliablity just because it a honda.
I rented one one time and then I bought a 15 year old Accord and the Accord felt like the best car in the world after driving the brand new Aveo. It sucked in every way, the handling sucked, the seats sucked, it didn't even shift gears correctly and it had no power.
I love how he points out the spoiler... that car has no spoiler...
He said one was available, but they showed the rear. *shrugs*

Yes, it is actually a Daewoo in disguise (korean)
like how far down you think they would be willing to help someone looking for their first car get one?

I usually can't find fault with newer GM's but this car is one of the worst cars I've ever test driven. I drove the 5 speed. The shifter was unrefined and the throw was too long. Its gearing is was too long given the engines torque requiring a downshift to 2nd even when carrying speed into a 90 degree right hand turn. I tried third but it bogged horribly. GM really could have done better with this car, they can start by getting rid of that stupid vent and those awful rear lights.
The aveo, one of the biggest POS cars ever made. It's a daihatsu made in Korea.
You mean Daewoo? Daihatsu is Japanese
This video is aggressively 90s
This car is a piece of junk compared to the Honda Fit. That's a real car.
This has to be one of the WORST GM products in a very long time. Who would ever choose this over a Fit or Yaris?
wow this car performs horribly...they need better braking power...and yeah 11.8 seconds to 60 is an eternity =( the cost for this car is cheap and so is the look. if you're in a budget i guess this is an ok car.
this host likes to yell about everything for some reason
this vehicle is mechanic special dream weak head gaskets weak thermostat housing shitty front ends horrible car so fuckin bad my friends going through hell with this car
GM sucks! This car gets only about 25 mpg's in the city and 0-60 time 11.8 secs! That is terrible! My stock 17 year old 92 civic vx would smoke the shitty aveo in acceleration, gets double the gas milage, and reliablity just because it a honda.
Good car for $1,000. That's all their worth.
Perfect for the single mom in her early 20s
cocky?
i know how to spell crap why do you think it had all the right letters.
i was in a hurry and clicked post with out thinking
enjoy yourself
This dude's trying so hard to make this car not sound like the complete piece of shit that it is.
ha its funny cause its tru
They praise even the worst cars possible in this show. Like Pontiac Aztek, Chevy Chevette and Yugo.
That what he is known for, sugarcoating all reviews, no matter how crappy the car is.
Exactly, the manufacturers probably pay for his lunch, to say good things about their boring, garbage cars. lol
I rented one one time and then I bought a 15 year old Accord and the Accord felt like the best car in the world after driving the brand new Aveo. It sucked in every way, the handling sucked, the seats sucked, it didn't even shift gears correctly and it had no power.
Such unsafe GM trash
What a Garbagedick Trashpile car. Why GM. Why??
Try to compete with Toyota and Honda.
Man even my fit i used to have is more powerful, stylish, spacious, fuel efficient, n reliable than this.
I think this car is more reliable than a shitty Chevy sonic
What's a "fit"?
@@steeltownbrown52 honda fit.
Awful
this show is just awful. this is even worse than when motortrend had a middle aged woman do their best truck of the year video.
Asco d auto ! Horrible garbage
