The reason Mo made it unanimously into the Hall is pretty simple; he was a hell of a player, and an even better guy.
Rivera never showed anyone up, he never blamed anyone else, and he never took the credit. That kinda class is rare and respected in every field.

It's been almost 4 years since his last game and I still cried while watching this. No matter who else ever plays for the Yankees, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera will always be my all-time favorites.

Born in 1986 in New York, I could always count on Mo in those HUGE games. You knew in those playoff games that when Mo came in, all that mattered were how many runs we could score because we weren't giving up any! Get Mo on the mound in the 8th or 9th with any lead, and we were guaranteed the win. If you're from NY and watched those Yankees in the 90s and 2000's, you know what I'm talking about.

I remember listening to the radio as a kid. Any time there was a lead and they brought him in, I knew the Yankees won and I was happy. It was that simple. Best closer to ever play the game. Period. And the most amazing part is that he had only one good pitch. But it was so good that it was practically unhittable.

The reason why? Because while throughout the vast history of baseball there have been many greats of the game. However, with that brings many questions and debates over the greatest players ever.
The debates have on multiple occasions divided the baseball community and its fans, leaving relatively few truths established in baseball.
Mariano Rivera is the exception to that, because while there have been many great closers, he’s without a doubt the greatest closer to ever play. That’s why he’s the first unanimously inducted player to the HOF.
@@lukaslopez8849 Ruth was a victim of the biggest logjam as HOF was just created that time. Saying that no one should be unanimous just because Ruth wasn't is as unfair as it gets and helps pave way for additional HOF voting stupidity.

A true gentlemen, a guy who did not mind if you asked for an autograph. Paid it forward to the many communities in the Bronx and to his native Panama. It is an honor to have watched him live and see him become a legend.

A skinny kid from Panama, fulfilling his dream to play baseball. He learned his craft as a pitcher in Major league ball. Not only that, but in NewYork city. A south Bronx cathedral, known as Yankee stadium.
How lucky were we to have such a premier pitcher in the best ballclub in history.

I was glad and proud to watch him and the other 95-09 Yankees. Thrilling games, unadulterated drama and excitement abounded with them. This piece on Mariano brought tears to my eyes. Him, Jeter, Posada and Petite were all professionals and class acts.
I don't care if you're a Red Sox fan, A Mets fan, it doesn't matter. Mariano Rivera is one of the greatest person to ever dawn a baseball uniform at the major league level.

I lost count of how many autographs he signed for my daughter. Every time he saw her in her wheelchair he came over for a minute. Today she is grown and very high functioning..no longer needs the chair. He invited her to cooperstown for the induction but we could not make it.

Back in Panama he played as an outfielder for his local province team when he was a teenager. A local MLB scout noted that he had a cannon of an arm when he threw the ball back to the infield and convinced him to make the transition to pitching instead.
Who would have thought that decision was the spark to ignite the road to a legendary career!!

When Rivera retired Thomas Boswell of the Washington Post wrote a column called "The Greatest Yankee Since Babe Ruth." Maybe so. It's almost impossible to compare him to Mantle and DiMaggio because their roles were so different, but I guess you could ask yourself whom you'd take if you were choosing up sides on a playground.
Mariano Rivera is one of the greatest players of all time. The best closer ever. And also one of the classiest players in the history of baseball.

Fact: Rivera is the only active player to ever have his number retired (as in, the only player whose number got retired while he was still playing).

It was retired for Jackie Robinson so the players who were still using the number gets to keep it. Mo happens to be the last one to wore that number.

Actually, Dennis Eckersley blew two saves in his postseason career (1988 WS Game 1 vs. LAD, 1992 ALCS vs. TOR Game 4). Eck is a pretty good pitcher.
And you will take Trevor Hoffman over Mariano Rivera?! I love Hoffman too, but he blew two saves in his postseason career and never made it back to the World Series after Scott Brosius took him deep.
Finally, I get that Mo blew Game 7 of the 2001 World Series and Games 4 and 5 of the 2004 ALCS, but the 2003 World Series? He didn't blow a save there. I meant you mean the 1997 ALDS.

42 was retired by the MLB 1997 in honor of Jackie Robinson, However, the grandfather clause states that players currently using the number at the time were allowed to continue use the number until they either retire or change teams. Mo was the last player to use the number until he retired in 2013 and the Yankees retired the number a second time.
Mo didn't save game 7 in 2001, but he might save their lives because if they win game 7, they will probably ride the airplane which finally crashed and nobody survived

Until the Mets were responsible for snapping his perfect save run at Citi Field, then he flopped for about 4~ saves in a row, including the clash of the titans vs. Miguel Cabrera.
It was his last year and his ERA was still 2.11 and came back from a season ending injury a year before.

Trevor Hoffman. Best reliever in the history of baseball. you knew what pitch he was gonna throw and still made the guy miss. he is missed for sure in baseball.

Just wanna say, Rivera had the benefit of being on a team that gave him many opportunities to close out ballgames. There was probably a bunch of way better closers that never got the attention they deserved because they weren't on a winning team and therefore never got the save chances Rivera did

You are simply wrong. There are was no better closer in baseball and there still isn't. He was given more opportunities because his team was a winning one, but he was also given more opportunities to fail and HE DID NOT.
Just his presence in the bullpen changed the way manager's went about their gameplan; what substitutions to make and how to at least tie the game before Rivera got on the mound. No one reliever in history did it as successfully over nearly two decades. Not even close. And to do that with essentially one pitch. Your assessment is wrong but you're not alone in feeling that way.

Perhaps I did miss your point. My point is that the objective of the game is to win a championship. The Yankee championships were accomplished within the rules of the MLB. Many other teams chose not to make winning their priority. I see it as illogical to condemn an organization for doing all it can to win.

He gave up one earned run that series, not exactly destroying Mo as well as the fact that in Game 5 that other blown save was a result of having to clean up the mess Tom Gordon made in the 8th inning with runners on corners with no out.

Eck was no longer a starter once he became a closer, he did not close and start because he couldn't do the former anymore due to his alcoholism. Also he blew another save in 1992 ALCS that put the A's out of the series and lost a game against the Reds in 1990 WS. Not to mention the second half of his closing career was trash compared to what he had from 1988 to 1992.
