Yea this whole bit with them being executives was great. I remember it ending up with them owning a bathroom lol. My other favorite bit was the one where they were British secret service and Laurie had to report to "Control". It was so endearing it was totally a shame when they ended that one.
How else do you think they decided to start trying to appeal more to gays and liberals and immigrants, etc? Their "traditional customers" were running away, the "profit margins" were down...so they went for a "corporate re-imaging". OC it'll probably just piss off their remaining faithful customers....
'no, no no no peter.. yesterday was time for straight talking, today is time for plain speaking.' i almost fell off my chair, stephen fry is so excellent
Ha ha, out of all the sketches those two genius' have done over the years, I just LOVED the characters of John and Peter! "And Lord, show us some way that we can beat seven types of corporate CRAP out of Marjorie!" "DAAAAMN!!!!!"
The moment when Stephen says 'Marjorie' at 3:12 is one of the greatest things ever. And a bit later... 'How the hell does Marjorie fit into this?' 'Lengthways, Peter' Are there any lines in these John and Peter sketches that AREN'T comedy gold?
sooo....if I can afford to purchase all the DVDs in the collectie future years of my life, I can, indeed, view all the bits and pieces of Fry and Laurie from within my ownership. I thank TH-cam for all the uploads, they have given me much suicide saving laughter.
Have you seen the previous 'Peter and John' sketches? It's a parody of shows like Howard's Way - big corporate talk in the setting of a small town company. This is them transposed to a church setting, and there's another one with them working as toilet attendants. Sorry if any of this sounds patronising!
The irony is not lost on all of us, considering that Fry is a staunch, adamant, and fully committed atheist. Honestly I think we should endorse the religion of Fryerism - the words of Stephan Fry are significantly important.
These guys always had a great back and forth. I mean they could discuss anything and have people cracking up. I would love to have seen Fry show up on House.
James Smith As a patient. Who thinks he's a doctor. OK, that's just another transposition. Nothing original there. Except in this case, he's treating Dr House as a patient. And this Dr House business is the X Factor that'll sell this recycled idea as a new idea, then bring viewers back to the original sketch with the psychiatrists, and get them hooked on all the rest. Brilliant marketing and self referencing.
Sometimes when I watch an old F&L sketch I can't help but think of Harry Enfield slagging off Oxbridge comedians like Stephen and Hugh. It still annoys me, because in a straight sketch comedy fight, the average A Bit of Fry and Laurie sketch is funnier than Harry Enfield has ever done.
omg i just stumbled on this video and i live near uttoxeter. its a small town in staffordshire, so random that they used it to mention just once in the sketch lol
not german at all, they wear a simple cross paty ... which even pre-dates medieval times and comes from italian christianity. Later used by templers all across europe and many more, usually christian organisations. That cross came long before German even was a thing. Cant be certain, but I would bet you think of the iron cross or related prussian/german symbols, which are a black cross paty with white outline ... fairly easy to differentiate from the religious crosses.
@rosieeday yep other half of the Axis, but it was majorly worth it! i'm fixing this clock, would you give me a hand? big hand or little hand? little hand please! :D ah breaktimes have never known such fun! :D
I don't think you have to know the context or characters, you just have to be aware that senior church figures don't use aggressive corporate-speak. It's the disconnect between the people and their mode of speech that makes it funny.
Manas Surya They are not attempting American accents; they are aping 1980s British business talk of the kind portrayed on programmes like Howards’ Way.
I love it when Fry and Laurie play these two characters. The premise of them being two business men in an unorthodox enterprise is smashing.
Or a rather Orthodox enterprise
My favorite was when they were drinking and smoking as they discussed their health club business
Yea this whole bit with them being executives was great. I remember it ending up with them owning a bathroom lol. My other favorite bit was the one where they were British secret service and Laurie had to report to "Control". It was so endearing it was totally a shame when they ended that one.
I mean...the Church as an institution is quite a big business.
Best prayer ever - "Oh Lord, you've seen the figures..."
"Re: your prayer of last night...."
Utter genius.
It's a dog eat dog world in the field of international religionomics.
“The same sides of a different coin”
I feel like this is how priests act when nobody is watching.
How else do you think they decided to start trying to appeal more to gays and liberals and immigrants, etc? Their "traditional customers" were running away, the "profit margins" were down...so they went for a "corporate re-imaging". OC it'll probably just piss off their remaining faithful customers....
the film Spotlight covered that, kinda
"Marjorie."
"Marjorie? How the hell does Marjorie fit into this?"
"Lengthways, Peter."
'no, no no no peter.. yesterday was time for straight talking, today is time for plain speaking.'
i almost fell off my chair, stephen fry is so excellent
"Well John, I don't claim to be inflammable about things like this.." 🤣🤣
Ha ha, out of all the sketches those two genius' have done over the years, I just LOVED the characters of John and Peter!
"And Lord, show us some way that we can beat seven types of corporate CRAP out of Marjorie!"
"DAAAAMN!!!!!"
I snorted bogies out my nose when he said "24 hours, in a pie chart in a dog's arse Peter!"
“Including Morris Dancing in the EvenSong rituals has boosted attendance numbers!”
The moment when Stephen says 'Marjorie' at 3:12 is one of the greatest things ever.
And a bit later...
'How the hell does Marjorie fit into this?'
'Lengthways, Peter'
Are there any lines in these John and Peter sketches that AREN'T comedy gold?
When I was watching Game of Thrones everytime someone mentioned the name "Margaery", I ALWAYS heard it in John and Peter's voice. "MmmmARgaery."
I love them more with every new sketch I watch!
Maaahhhjorie. I love the way they say that. Makes me want to walk around going "Maahhjorie."
sooo....if I can afford to purchase all the DVDs in the collectie future years of my life, I can, indeed, view all the bits and pieces of Fry and Laurie from within my ownership. I thank TH-cam for all the uploads, they have given me much suicide saving laughter.
2:58 lol well there goes the drink
I love that coin bit, gets me every time.
i really just like the concept of this sketch
It always gotta be Marjorie.
My geography teachers middle name was Louie.
That last vicious and vile utterance of MARJORIE absolutely slays me 😂😂😂😂
Best part is, what he does with his tounge at the very end. :D
There are perhaps five or six F&L sketches that end with Stephen doing his damnedest to keep from corpsing. And they're all great.
Corpsing?
It means laughing
I would go to church if priests were actually like this.
So am I! This just makes me smile, so glad I'm from Uttoxeter ;D
I love John and Peter. And of course Marjorie. 😂
Have you seen the previous 'Peter and John' sketches? It's a parody of shows like Howard's Way - big corporate talk in the setting of a small town company. This is them transposed to a church setting, and there's another one with them working as toilet attendants. Sorry if any of this sounds patronising!
The only bit that was patronising was the apology for the first bit seeming patronising, which was a tad meta.
I was just thinking of Howard’s Way. I had a boss who still spoke like that in 2000
Patronising in a dogs arse!
That C of E sign behind the desk has an Ahnk on it...
romecorp...fucking brilliant!
the audio on this is melting my brain.
In the UK, the idea of clergymen as businessmen is a premise for humor - in the US, this just reality...
"Yep, John. It's from God alright." Brilliant! XD
*If only Fry was a priest I would go to church every day given us by God*
The irony is not lost on all of us, considering that Fry is a staunch, adamant, and fully committed atheist. Honestly I think we should endorse the religion of Fryerism - the words of Stephan Fry are significantly important.
wow, hugh laurie being the executive vice-bishop of Uttoxeter makes it a lot more interesting! there's nothing here at the moment! :D
These guys always had a great back and forth. I mean they could discuss anything and have people cracking up. I would love to have seen Fry show up on House.

peter sherman? as in p sherman 42 wallaby way sydney?
CassiaAleriPrice YOU LEAVE SYDNEY OUTTA THIS
Sometimes when I watch an old F&L sketch I can't help but think of Harry Enfield slagging off Oxbridge comedians like Stephen and Hugh. It still annoys me, because in a straight sketch comedy fight, the average A Bit of Fry and Laurie sketch is funnier than Harry Enfield has ever done.
This is is out-of-the-world funny
Pure class !!
I guess love and hate are the same side of a different coin. That line almost got away from me. So good
Has anyone else binged Fry and Laurie and then House? Talk about whiplash lol.
marjorie has to be among the top 10 villains of all time
"O, Lord... You've seen the figures."
i love these two, they always make me laugh!
Maltese Crosses around their necks and an Ankh on the wall!
call it a diverse portfolio, very UNorthodox hahahaha
They were PROTESTING the ecclesiastical teaching. hahaha
Peter’s hair. The styling.
Isn’t that Marjorie’s handiwork!
Marjorie!!!! Hilarious….
Marjorie sounds like a real handful
"Dammmnnn!"😂
Yeah, I think he wanted to try to do that while he was over here in the state filming his episodes of Bones. I would love to see Stephen on House.
@Deathawaitsnoone It's actually a cross pattée, of which the Iron Cross is just one example of the shape's use.
O Lord.. (You've seen the figures)
2:58 gets me every time
John & Peter: Daaamn! All over again?
I was into the plot, now I want to know if they managed to beat Marjorie...
At least they managed to get out of the bathroom.
well, not exactly, but she fell off a horse sometime in the past...
"Maximum height 2 meters"
lmao "two coins that i spent long ago..."
DAAAAAAAMN! I love those two. :D
brilliant :)
Stephen Fry is the best.
Wow. I am a wee bit ashamed that I didn't even know it was a proper place!
Why is nobody talking about Hugh's tongue work in this
That's a Maltese Cross, isn't it?
I guess love and hate are just the same sides of a different coin.
A coin that I spent years ago...
DAMN!
Series 2, last episode I think ;x.
'Tis a good'un. :P
omg i just stumbled on this video and i live near uttoxeter. its a small town in staffordshire, so random that they used it to mention just once in the sketch lol
When he throws his drink
Love and hate are really just the same sides of a different coin 😃
Christ on a bike John!!!
its always margery
hahahahah this is bloody fantastic. xD.
Laurie sounds a lot like Vegeta here lol.
0:35
Hugh: John!
Stephen: John! ......Peter.
C of E merging with Rome....hahahahahahahahah Oh geez, I am a dork. I'm from the US I am not suppose to understand that, but I do. heeheeheeheehee
Are they saying merger with ROCOR? The Russian Orthodox?
Tell me something I don't know ;-)
in corporate america, bitcoin owns you....
Project ChristCom!
Where's Marjory?
I wish they were making new stuff sooo funny!
Trying to keep your Church alive during COVID19.
Best are the german crosses :)
not german at all, they wear a simple cross paty ... which even pre-dates medieval times and comes from italian christianity. Later used by templers all across europe and many more, usually christian organisations. That cross came long before German even was a thing.

Merger with Romecorp. Lol
In the 70's, a church threatened to sue a member of my family for payment on a "love offerring" promise.
It says C of E, as in Church of England, however, the of is barely visible so it could have been an intentional inclusion. Well spotted!
Existential executives?
Marjorie??!! DAMMMMNNNN....
So through the series their career kept going downhill and they went from running publish washroom to church? 😂
at 1:00, did hugh say p. sherman, as in p. sherman, 42 wallaby way, sydney?
A lot of "Tonguing the joke in" here
"Father Ted " comes to mind!
I love the Egyptian symbol Ankh on the wall. It was from Ra Amun, the Egyptian creator god long before the alleged Moses.
I don't think you have to know the context or characters, you just have to be aware that senior church figures don't use aggressive corporate-speak. It's the disconnect between the people and their mode of speech that makes it funny.
I think the irony is that church is a business and they're just honest about it, which makes it funny
@GettingWhiggyWithIt Who's Marjorie?
No, that's a symbol used by some denominations of the Christian church (not sure which, though I know Catholics don't use it)
hahaha, their bad american accents are still hilarious
No worse than Americans bad English accents....
The accents aren't meant to be american, it's a bombastic english accent.
Manas Surya They are not attempting American accents; they are aping 1980s British business talk of the kind portrayed on programmes like Howards’ Way.
in the back you can see canvas or sth with letters C E on it...just sayin
Toxic American Christian corporate masculinity 30 years ago. Prescience is terrifying.
Meh...
