- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1992 platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Kirby's Dream Land.
Kirby's Dream Land was the game that introduced us to Kirby, and stands as an excellent first title in one of what has become one of Nintendo's prime franchises, as well as one of developer Hal's enduring hallmarks (even if it's just one among many amazing games they produced, including the Mother and Smash Bros. games).
Things have changed a lot for the pink puff in the past twenty-five years. He was just as cute and cheery then as he is now, but in the original adventure he hadn't yet gained his ability to take on powers by eating his enemies. He flies, he inhales, and he eats, but except for a few predetermined moments, those are the only means of protecting himself that he has.
It definitely makes for a simpler game, but not a worse one. The levels are varied and extremely well detailed. This was seriously of higher quality than most NES platformers for its presentation! The music is great, and though the game is short and easy, there is a hard mode included. Still, that didn't stop me from beating the game within a couples of hours of playing for the first time, but I loved it nonetheless. The mechanics are spot on, it's never frustrating, and it's generally just plain old fun. Nothing wrong with that!
I think that this one is still my favorite of the entire series.
And the shout-out to the Lolo games on the second stage - super sweet.

That was my thoughts too, this is pretty damn good given the original Gameboy's limitations. I might actually get out my gameboy pocket for this one, which I still have and keep in good working order.

Don't feel bad. There's always a reason to prolong playing a good game, even if it's short. There is an extra mode after you beat it the first time, but it's just more difficult with less hit points.
@@rhiannancaraway took me a month poor battery life and no save after spending 12 hours none stop until 2am sitting on a toilet seat hiding in the bathroom I finally beat it and was exhausted

It’s kind of sad that people only really know Kirby for Smash Bros. And Super Star. Most of the games are actually really great but they’re often ignored for the same reason people dislike the New Super Mario Bros games

I played through on the switch a few weeks back. Adding the classics from our childhoods was one of the best decisions Nintendo have ever made.

I played and replayed this so often on my gameboy I started getting audiotory hallucinations of the soundtrack when I wasn't playing in a quiet room AND I THOUGHT IT WAS AWESOME

I haven't beaten a large number of video games but Kirby's is one of those games. I played it for nearly 14 hours straight on a family road trip and was so relieved when I finally managed to take down King Dedede. The soundtrack definitely still rips in 2024.

I played Kirby's Dream Land on the Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance.
I beat this game on the Game Boy Color in 2002.
I still play it today.

Kirby's debut! He was black and white in the US box art. Also, Shigeru Miyamoto and Masahiro Sakurai (Kirby and Super Smash Bros. series creator) debated which color they should give to the character, yellow or pink. And, ofc, the latter won.

Fun fact: They left him a yellow skin in multiple smash games for this reason.
What an appealing choice. You can either be the colour of a pissy nappy, or the color of the rash that comes from not changing it soon enough. Kirby really was meant to be a charmer, huh?

This is one of the most underrated platformers of all time.
The emulation is absolutely impeccable here! When you pause it and go frame by frame (with "," & "." keys) you even see the screen blur! It's incredible! Well done.

It took for ages to figure how to beat the final boss in this game. One of the great challenges of my childhood!

Have you ever been playing a video game and there was a boss that you liked so much that you didn't wanna beat them? Mr Shine and Mr Bright were those bosses for me lol, as a kid I though they were so bad-ass, I'd be drawing them all the time lol

Playing this as a kid (probably around 1994, a couple years after it first came out) is my earliest memory of playing any video games. Awesome game. The other old Game Boy game I remember playing the most at the time was a Simpsons game called Bart vs. the Juggernauts.

Hello. I was born in the 2000s and I am just getting into retro games like these. I have never had a gameboy but I am planning on buying one. I just have one question, I know some of the original hand helds didn't have cartridges and had only one game charged into them, is the original gameboy one of those? Do I have to buy a different gameboy charged with each game?

My older cousin had a GameBoy and only had tetris and Batman as games to play with. When I was 9 I remember my little nephew running up the stairs and screaming "We Have A New Game!" and it was Kirby's Dreamland 😄

While I never owned a GB, but I did have a Super GB with old SNES, I did own this along with Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. However, those were the only GB games I've ever beaten. Actually, they were the only 2 GB games I owned when I had the Super GB. Good play of this!
Thanks! I thought Mario 2 was a great game too. I dunno how many times I beat it on the old GB, and probably a couple more times on the SGB before I let a friend borrow it and he lost it lol.

With teary eyes I write this comment. I loved this game so much. Family couldn’t afford much but my mother made sure we had some sort of entertainment. I was about ten years old when she bought this game for me for Christmas along with a game boy. I’m forty now and I just beat Kirby’s adventure on my switch from the Nintendo online and I see a lot of similarities. Are they the same game ?

One Word. Masterpiece. Not much else to say here. I remembered playing this on family car rides, a lot. It was always fun to see how far I could get before I have to stop playing. If it wasn't _this_ game I've played, it was both of the *_Super Mario Land_* games and *_Pokémon Blue_* . It's just ridiculous that this cute pink puff has got quite the reputation for having *LOTS* of good games. Just like *_Super Mario_* . _HAL_ , man. They don't mess around.

• *Good Animation* (... For the most part.)
• *Iconic Soundtrack*
• *Easy, But NEVER Boring*

• *EXTRA MODE!!!* (The bosses have terrible, and unidentifiable patterns. It's so frustrating!)

+chun pop You're in luck :) I felt like giving it a go and remembered it surprisingly well! I was expecting to have to practice a lot to get my game back since it's so hard, but it only took me about an hour of playing to refresh my memory enough before I gave it run and finished it without dying. There were some stupidly close calls (especially on the last boss), but I think it came out well. It'll be up in a bit.

I played this game as a kid. I didn’t know how many levels there were. I was playing for hours one day and made it to the end of level 5 when my gameboy’s batteries died. I never picked it up again because I was so upset. I just found out today that I had actually made it to the end. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to try one more time. Either way, thanks for the nostalgia❤️

What a classic
Kirby's introduction gave him to us not only in his original glory (where he had floating, inhaling, spitting, and a few power ups) but it also predated Kirby being pink! (He was white before Kirby's Adventure on NES)
I also like how aside from Castle Lololo, the entirely of this game is remade on the SNES as Spring Breeze in Kirby Super Star. (Albeit with Kirby having his ability to take powers from enemies, slide, block, and summon helpers)
