  • A playthrough of Capcom's 1993 platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Mega Man IV.
    Wow, Capcom really brought their A game to this one. Mega Man III was a fantastic recovery effort after the disappointing second entry, and this one tops it in just about every way. It's just hard enough without being frustrating, the attention to detail is outstanding, and the music could pass as NES music it's done so well - especially those brand new tracks near the end of the game. I really love the cutscenes as well - I think those might actually put this one above the NES games for its presentation, color be damned!
    Mega Man IV is a fantastic game - I'd recommend it to anyone who had even a passing interest in the series.
    *Side note: if you get four game overs on a stage, Dr. Light will interrupt upon continuing and give you an apparently powered-up mega buster. I don't notice any difference in the power, but still a neat little bonus. You'll see me die and get a game over at Toad Man's stage, but you'll only see that screen once - I cut the other continues out. Nobody really wanted to see me run to the nearest pit over and over through three continues, did they? :)
    *Recorded using the DMG shader in Retroarch for that crunchy retro look.

    Mega Man IV is one of the superstars of the Game Boy library - it's made so well that, if not for the lack of color, you'd never know it was a Game Boy game.

      The Mega Man World games on Game Boy were usually well done for some of the original Game Boy's limits, and also giving some original content like the Mega Man Killers as well as what 5 did with the Stardroids for example.

    This encounter with Wily is one of the most epic in the series I've seen yet! I don't know what it is about the way it was presented with the music and everything, but the final battle with Ballade and Dr. Wily in his freaking *WARSHIP in SPACE* and Wily's *GIANT MECH* was really a step above anything that you see in the NES games, even! It was all just so epic, it's one of my favorite final fights in the entire series. And this was done on *GAME BOY,* no less!! This game is awesome. RIP Ballade! Your noble sacrifice was not in vein. See you, Ballade, in the inexplicable DLC cameo boss fight in Mega Man 10! XD

    Good lord that Intro music kicks me right in the Nostalgia! Thanks so much for letting that play and not just pressing start to skip it. They absolutely killed it with this game from the music to the cutscenes to the stages. The Gameboy had one helluva Sound Chip for it's time and they really outdid themselves with this title. This will always one of my favorite Gameboy games of all time. Now I have to go see if anyone has done a color hack of it :)

  • @Peter_Morris
    @Peter_Morris 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    It's really interesting to me how each of the GB entries has bits from the game of the same name, plus the next one in the series. And I like how the stages are similar to their NES counterparts, but different enough to be interesting. It's almost like a what-if scenario. Like, what if Mega Man went a different route through this area? Pretty cool.

    I completely agree, Mega Man 4 is the NES Mega Man 2 of the Gameboy titles. It's freaking superb. And man, that intro music & cutscene is my favorite in the entire series, for all systems. Playing this after Mega Man 2 GB makes you realize how far they came when it came to the Gameboy titles.

    • @Darknight0681
      @Darknight0681 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, Mega Man II GB was made by a different outsourced developer who had no idea what Mega Man was. Minakuchi Engineering did 1,3,4, and 5. All four of them play VERY consistently with each other, but in comparison to 1, 3 was the first one where they really started figuring out the system. Particularly in the sound department.

    3:45 is actually the best spot in the entire game to grind P Chips very early on. You can just run back and forth and those birds will continue to spawn and will drop loads of P Chips each time. You can get the timing down good where one charged shot will rip thru them all each time. There are also some hidden P Chip pickups later in the stage hidden behind the waterfall in the one part where you can walk behind it.
    Also, in Pharaoh Man's stage at the very beginning, there is stuff hidden under the ledges that sit just above the sand. If you let yourself sink into the sand and go up under those ledges you'll collect the hidden items. I can't remember if it's an extra life or P Chip pickup but there is stuff hidden under one or two of those ledges.

    Adding the "Dr. Bright Lab." was a great feature. I remember re-playing the Toad stage a lot (because it was the easiest one) to farm these chips for Dr. Bright. Revisiting old stages to collect all B-E-A-T letters in case you missed them and then get this little bird was also a nice idea. And the music...ah this was one of my fav gameboy games.

I can't recall about the 2nd set of four, but holy hell is the cutscene between the first and 2nd four bosses so freaking dope! I can also say that the Toad Man stage is the perfect stage to farm P chips as there are a ton of them hidden in spots, and the swooping bird guys drop lots of them too! You can get enough to buy everything just from farming the swooping little birds at the beginning of that stage!

    Weakness for the second set of robot masters for this version -
    Napalm Man is weak to Pharaoh Shot - Napalm is made of sticky flammable material in which a single flame can set it on fire. In his case, his napalm bombs can prematurely explode.
    Charge Man with Rain Flush - He's an industrial revolution, steam powered locomotive which he's powered by coal. The water will render it useless.
    Crystal Man with Charge Kick - Hitting the glass ball using a powerful force like kicks will shatter it into tiny pieces.

  • @skins4thewin
    @skins4thewin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just went back and beat the game after many long years, was just as fun as I remember it being from my childhood. I will say that the game is fairly easy compared to other Mega Man games, however Crystal Man's stage can be pretty brutal your first time through it til you figure out how to get through. It's by far the longest and toughest stage in the game, and even it isn't that bad. The rest of the game is pretty easy to be honest, and the Charged up Mega Buster is pretty overpowered and is really all you need to beat any of the bosses. I also noticed that there are no credits at all at the end of the game which is rather bizarre. There's just a Boss Roll showing all the bosses in the game and a thank you for playing screen at the end.
