    But of course in this "dynamic series" comparison Earthworks Ethos is not a dynamic microphone. It's a supercardioid condenser. Good job never the less.

      Good eye! Thanks for pointing that out. However, as I say before the comparison I included the ETHOS as another example of a 'broadcast' style mic, rather than another dynamic.

    I thought Microphone B sounded Really good for 37 bucks

    Actually it is $37 on amazon but plus tax it is $40

      Yeah I would imagine tax will add a few bucks depending on where you live.

    I downloaded your video and tried some EQ on the mics to get them to sound as close as possible, EQ does help with the Fifine's shortcomings, but it still sounds less 'transparent'. One thing I did notice (or thought I noticed) was that the Fifine is way more sensitive to proximity effect. If I am right, people will probably have to be more disciplined about keeping a consistent distance from the mike,

    How gain hungry is it, are you using a cloud lifter or anything of the sort?

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not too gain hungry. Probably about 8-10dB less than an SM7b

    I just bought this mic and must say for the money it's a pretty amazing deal.

      Haha fair enough. Well, not to push you one way or another, but we all start somewhere and (speaking from experience) it gets much easier once you rip the bandaid off and dive in. ;) in any case I appreciate your support here !

    i own it, it's great at the price and fits the SM7b foam, and you definitely want a foamy
    i watched the whole thing, was suprised you didn't put a windscreen on the FiFine.
    P.S. I bought my D, if you're done with the C, could you send it over? I 'd love to test it.
    I am a small but industrious channel, deserving of your love.

    Is it just me, or the Ethos sounds muffled compared to the SM7B?
    The k669d is definitely the brightest of them all, to the point that it can be too much for higher pitched or sibilant voices. A thick foam windscreen can be a worthwhile investment alongside with the mic (Rode WS2, maybe). Or Ffine can update the great offer they have and include one in the box for a good price.

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good ear! The ETHOS has a very flat frequency response whereas the SM7b has some boosts/cuts in the mid-higher frequencies which might be what you’re hearing. And great call on the foam windscreen for the k669d! I agree 100%.

    Well i think the fifine K669D mic sounds awesome it really all depends on ur setting on how u set the mic 's up.... Each mic is deferent and has its own unique sound that u have to find what they refer to as a sweet spot … I own that heavy Sb7 and use a cloud finder on it as it a power hog but a nice mic …. But I just order me the k669d I bet I get them to sound almost the same with a few tweaks here and there…Thanks for sharing the video great job..Mike

    Very informative video. Might you be able to recommend a foam windscreen and a shockmount that would fit well with it?

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Glad you found it helpful. This mic doesn’t really need a shock mount fortunately, though if you’d like one I’m not sure what brands/models fit this mic. As for pop filters, it’s a similar story though I’d watch my other video on Pop Filters to get a broad perspective on what might best fit your needs. th-cam.com/video/QkROCKBOqmc/w-d-xo.html

    This was way to easy. Mike B was pretty bad. But, it’s $37. I was surprised that the SM-7B was brighter than the earthworks. We’re you doing any processing? The $37 mic, honestly, sounded like $10 to me. I was surprised that the SM-7B had better articulation than the Ethos.

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope! No processing.
      In terms of the respective frequency responses, the Ethos is pretty flat relative to the SM7b, which may be contributing to that articulation 'boost'. The trade-off in my use of both of those is more so that the Ethos is far more sensitive overall (condenser v dynamic).

    Are you using without effects on audio with the Fifine K669D?

  • @LeSaff
    @LeSaff ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, great video as usual, the main problem with these cheap mics, is very often about the self noise. But this one doesn't seem to suffer of it. Do you agree?

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! And yes relative to other cheap mics this one has a respectable self noise. However I don’t think it’s levels are up to a ‘professional’ standard. In other words I think this mic is a fine place to start out, but I’d be wary of using it for a job.

    • @LeSaff
      @LeSaff ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @jaymyersvoiceover Thanks for your answer.
      Even with some post production job (compression, eq, exciter...)? This is something often missing in the test of mics: trying to get the best out of it and see for what kind of use it can be suitable for (gaming, broadcasting, podcasting, vo...)

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point! I'll keep that in mind going forward, that's a great suggestion. I think it's perhaps avoided in reviews as so many different variables go into post-processing, making it difficult to apply with consistency/objectivity.
      I think with this mic you could certainly improve the sound of it with nuanced post-processing, however it will ultimately be fairly limited. I'd say if a person were concerned with the audio quality they're considering significant adjustments in post, they'd be better off investing in a higher quality mic instead. In my opinion, it'd ultimately offer better and more consistent results.
      On the other hand, if someone is just starting out and wants a solid starting baseline to begin learning/practicing. This isn't a bad option.

    • @LeSaff
      @LeSaff ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaymyersvoiceover Thanks, this was exactly my point. I believe the best mic to start recording for many years was the Audio Technica AT2020 (when you don't want to break the bank) but so many devices are released every day that it becomes difficult to understand this market with a lot of devices made for certain kind of jobs.
      What is your opinion about usb mics? Did you have the opportunity to try the earthworks icon usb who seems to be as good as the XLR version?

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LeSaff Exactly, couldn't agree more. My personal favorite starter mic is the Rode NT1, a bit more $$ but can take you pretty far. I can't speak for those outside of VO, but in the voiceover industry a large diaphragm condenser is the preferred jack of all trades if you were to pick a single mic.
      Earthworks is generally killer, though I haven't tried the USB Icon, only the ETHOS. More often than not the quality loss via USB relative to XLR is fine for casual use, but for competitive/professional voiceover XLR is the way to go.
