- José de San Martín, the Liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, is one of the most important figures in the history of Latin American independence. Today we venture out to the Buenos Aires Cathedral to see his final resting place and learn a little more about his life and final years. Come along!

There is a statue of Jose de San Martin, in Central Park, the monument was a gift from the people of the City of Buenos Aires and dedicated in 1951. It was located at the entrance to the Park at 59th Street and Sixth Avenue, which was established as a plaza to South American heroes in 1945 when Sixth Avenue was renamed the “Avenue of the Americas.” The project was initiated during the height of the Cold War and signaled an alliance between the U.S. and the South American nations against the perceived threat of communism. José de San Martín is depicted mid-battle, in a heroic stance, with his war horse rearing beneath him.

Yeah I don't think he'd liked that. Like Bolivar he was a firm believer in the Patria Grande or a united Latin America, and a big proponent of local industries against the international division of labour and national sovereignty, especially after the US attack on Malvinas.
@@maximipe a diferencia de Bolivar , San Martín era defensor de la voluntad y autodeterminación de los pueblos, por eso El encuentro de Guayaquil en el que S martín le deja sus tropas a Bolivar, porque no quería quedarse a gobernar. A pesar que en Chile y Perú le pedían que se quedase como gobernante y que Bolivar se queda gobernando la Granceza de San Martín fue la de alejarse del poder, saludos desde mendoza la tierra afonde preparó sus ejercitos , vivió y fué gobernador y desde aquí cruzó Los andes, que sería interesante que muestren el cerro de la Gloria adonde hay un monumento MUY Grande de él .

Lo que sí quisiera hacerte una aclaración, el Ejército de los Andes, no contaba con mayoría de tropas chilenas, todo lo contrario.
Las tropas chilenas de ese ejército eran una pequeña minoría, que junto a Bernardo O'Higgins se habían podido escapar del llamado desastre de Rancagua, dónde el Ejército Realista Español despedazó al ejército independentista chileno.
Piensa que por muy poco, O'Higgins es casi tomado prisionero en dicha batalla y salva su vida saltando su caballo la trampa en la que lo habían emboscado.
De haber tenido un ejército después de esa batalla no hubiese sido necesario refugiarse del otro lado de los Andes (Argentina).
San Martín construyó de la nada el Ejército de los Andes, y lo hizo con tropas remitidas por el gobierno de Buenos Aires, desde inclusive la provincia Oriental (hoy Uruguay) Mendoza, San Juan, San Luis, Córdoba.
Había sí tropas chilenas, pero eran solo los pocos sobrevivientes que O'Higgins pudo salvar.
La versión de la gran mayoría de tropas chilenas, la divulgaron de forma engañosa y falsa desde Chile porque hasta el día de hoy no pueden aceptar que un argentino y tropas argentinas les hayan dado su independencia.
La cosa es así, le guste a quien le guste y lo acepte o no. Como dice el gran Joan Manuel Serrat, "nunca es triste la verdad, lo que no tiene es remedio.
Por otra parte y para probar lo que yo digo, resulta MUY fácil corroborarlo. Fíjense cuáles fueron los Regimientos que cruzaron los Andes y cual era su nombre, van a ver qué ninguno de esos regimientos (la mayoría de infantería, de caballería hubo uno solo el de Granaderos a Caballo) tenía tras su nombre, la determinación "de Chile", como tampoco su bandera, ni siquiera estaba al mando de un oficial u oficiales chilenos. Por eso, de qué me vienen a hablar de mayoría tropas chilenas?
@@TR-AR Sisi lo dije incorrectamente. Creo que la armada que invadió peru estaba compuesta en su mayoria por chilenos pero el ejercito que trajeron estaba compuesta en su mayoria por argentinos. Gracias para ver!
El General San Martín nunca levantó su sable contra sus connacionales y cuando quisieron que lo hiciera, se fue a Europa.

As an argentinian he is my hero, in school we learn about his life and like everything else is probably not all true but history books teach us that he never wanted power for himself but for the people and to me that's the way I would like to remember him.
22:00 Yeah, our Granaderos are popular and beloved. They're almost never rude or agressive to other people. And will even take photos with you or kids. Specially they won't react badly for something simple like filming. They will react if you disrespect or endanger the tomb in any way though. But it never happens. Other than that, they're not there to scare kids or tourist, but to honor the Independence War hero and the Liberator of Argentina, Chile and Peru.

El General San Martín llego a Buenos Aires desde España en 1812 en momentos que la revolución estaba en sus momentos mas álgidos, el gobierno revolucionario le encomendó formar un regimiento profesional conocido como el Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo para defender los territorios independientes de las Provincias Unidas del Rio de la Plata ,tal era el nombre de nuestra nación en aquellos tiempos, es nuestro gran héroe nacional , es considerado como el Libertador de Argentina ,Chile y Perú...y existen muchos monumentos y Plazas con su nombre...por cuestiones políticas partió al destierro a Europa y falleció en Francia ,mas precisamente en Boulong SurxMer en 1850, sus restos mortales descansan en la Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, Saludos..!!
San Martín se fue de Argentina porque él odiaba profundamente a Buenos Aires y su rol destructivo en contra del resto del país. El se vio obligado a dejar su ejercito a Bolivar porque el gobierno unitario porteño no quizo continuar ayudándolo en sus campañas contra los españoles.
You gotta visit the "Museo Histórico Nacional" where there are things that were his property such as a Poncho the Mapuches gave him, a replica of the room where he lived in France, the only daguerreotype of him two years before his death and more.

Lo que pocos saben es que esa plaza es donde originalmente se encontraba en un principio el Regimiento de Granaderos en el momento de su fundacion, luego sus intalaciones fueron trasladadas a donde se encuentra actualmente, sobre la Avenida Luis Maria Campos al lado del hospital militar central.

San Martín is only claimed as a Freemason in recent years only by Argentine masonry. But the Freemasons in the UK have confirmed he never belonged to it, he does not appear in any mason registry of membership or oath (unlike Simón Bolivar did, along with the documents attesting his oath to them), he doesn't even have a single private letter exchange with any mason. The closest he was to them was staying at the home of a previous owner that was a mason (he was in England at that time for a while)... Other than that, he had secret revolutionary meetings but the people attending those were both masons and anti-masons (priests and such) so it is believed that the masons attendees did not reveal their true allegiance to the other men on those meetings. All his public political life comes across as overly zealous of his catholic beliefs (opposed to Freemason values)
@@Miolnir3 I found there's so much conflicting info out there about if he was a mason or not. He is featured prominently in the mason museum in the lodge in Santiago, Chile, but it's still hard to tell how involved he really was. I made a video when I visited that museum in Chile. 10:20 While Belgrano was leading the army of the north before San Martin he was ordered by the junta at Buenos Aires to fall back from Jujuy, all the way to Córdoba, in the face of an spanish counter invasion. That's how much the Porteños cared about the rest of the provinces, and a big reason why about half joined the Liga Federal or Liga de los Pueblos Libres but that's a whole other story.

@@carmeng8947 sisi! Estaba ahi en Mendoza en el verano y vi a la plaza San Martin y dos museos de San Martin. Creo que lo mas interesante fue el museo en el sitio de las ruinas de su casa. Tambien hay la gran estatua arriba en un cerro grande en el parque. no puedo recordar el nombre del cerro ahora mismo 😅 de todas formas, tengo un video de ahi sobre San Martin y el ejercito de los andes!

@@carmeng8947 soy de EEUU. no estoy en Mendoza ahora, estuve ahi en el verano por un mes. Me encantaba mucho! Tengo varios videos interesantes de Mendoza. Despues de mi visita, crucé Los Andes como San Martin, O'Higgins y Cabrera y invadí a Chile! Pero fui por micro, no por caballo 😅
And in London, somewhere close to the infamous "21B Baker Street" where Sherlock Holmes was located in fiction; there's a small round sign that commemorates San Martin as he lived there for a while. I (argentinian) went to see the Holmes stuff, the pic at Abbey Road and all that touristy things and stumbled upon it.
His military feats and strategies are still being taught in military schools around the word today. Says a lot about the dude.

Estaria bueno que averigües la historia del porque son 7 los guardias que cuidan la tumba, y del porque de la galera que llevan puesta los Granaderos a Caballo.
Mi marido, oficial del regimiento de Granaderos, dice que: El morrion _(la galera)_ era originalmente de otros materiales y principalmente cumplía la función de proteger un poco a los Granaderos de los sablazos del enemigo.
Sobre los 7 Granaderos, es porque cuando llegaron los restos de San Martin a Buenos Aires, en el puerto lo esperaban los últimos siete Granaderos que fueron parte de su ejército desde la creación del regimiento y luchando en todas las batallas del mismo y, que estos siete permanecieron toda esa noche junto a quien en vida fue su General.
@@micaelaarami9437 también el tema de la galera, es para que el granadero nunca mirara hacia el piso, sino siempre con la cabeza en alto. El visor lo tiene en caída, por eso lo decía.
You ought to visit the National Aviation Museum (MNA) it's a few kilometres away from BA in Moron Air base (city of Moron) it has a lot of historic aircraft including many Falklands war veterans. Really worth the visit.

Esa estatua y todo lo hecho en metal en la casa de San Martin sobrevivió a la Segunda Guerra Mundial por orden directa de Hitler, por la falta de metal para la fabricación de armamento y otros pertrechos de guerra en Alemania, el mando alemán mandó que toda cosa de metal que pudieran conseguir para ser enviada a Alemania y luego fundida para fabricar elementos de guerra en los países ocupados fueran saqueados y Hitler al ser un ávido lector de la historia bélica mundial conocía a San Martín y expresamente ordenó que tanto su estatua y su casa no sean tocados, el mismo hombre que ordenó derribar la torre Eiffel es que el ordenó que nada de San Martin sea removido de su lugar original.

José de San Martín hated Buenos Aires. His tomb should not be there! He said, "I leave the country because Buenos Aires has become its capital! This city is the source of all the bad things that are happening to the country, I can't stand it anymore". He had to meet with Bolivar in Guayaquil because the centralist government in Buenos Aires did not want to help him liberate all the Spanish colonies in South America. San Martin left his army with Bolivar, came back to Argentina then left the country, afterword the continent until he died. I think the city of Mendoza would have been the right place for him. But Buenos Aires stole and still steels anything that it can, from the rest of the country.
Debo recordarle que el general San Martín dijo "quiero que mi corazón descanse en el de Buenos Aires". Cumpliendo con su deseo se construyó su tumba en la catedral de Buenos Aires junto a la Plaza de Mayo.

@@GarryMikal si es verdad despues de las batallas de chacabuco y maipu el ejercito de los andes quedo diezmado y nada se reagruparon en los patriotas chilenos alguna division del grupo de Cazadores N°11 de Cuyo y los Libertos que eran negros esclavos que peleaban por su libertad terminada la guerra de la independencia , donde muchos se quedaron en Peru no volvieron a la Argentina
En el Museo Historico Nacional ahi se encuentra una sala exclusiva del Gral San Martin donde se encuentra su sable Corvo y lo custodia los Granaderos a Caballo siempre hay un guardia de custodio del Sable perteneciente al libertador

You greatly explained the story! However, sorry to correct you, but while San Martin was liberating Argentina there was no civil war yet. That started after our independence!
@@stirpsromana yes correct. When I mentioned the civil war I was referring to the time after Argentina's independence when San Martin was fighting in Chile and Peru. Sorry if it wasn't clear, i sorta ramble and go off on tangents sometimes 😅

I used to walk by plaza San Martin to go to work. The monument was never surrounded by those plants and the iron fence, they did it in order to avoid vandalism and people hanging around it, specially by inmigrant loitering leaving some munuments in Buenos Aires with garbage and graffiti its a shame, also dud don't get to close to the camera, looks like you are going to come inside my living room😂
