the less you start using your phone, the more you realize others use theirs a lot and are missing out on real life. Especially for gen z, there is a normalization of spending hours a day on your phone (even before quarantine)
Seriously! I realized that atp the only reason why I still have social media is to stay relevant with my friends cause I hate being the only person who’s like “what’s that”. Like my friends were making tiktok references a week ago and I was just confused because I haven’t had it since September . I used to hate people who would complain about my obsession with tiktok and the Internet (now they have social media lmao) but I’m starting to sympathize with them (how the tables have turned). I am not one of those people who are like “ugh I hate phones yadada” but I would like to talk about other things outside of the Internet sometimes. Like the content of the convos I have with my one friend is just tiktoks and it gets annoying sometimes cause I’d like them to talk about themselves rather than tiktok.
@@mel_ty9500 yeah same! and I see what you mean, like everything is related to trends online rather than topics to talk about with friends not revolving around technology. I recently had to evaluate how much anime I was watching because I found that it was all I would talk about with people and it was an obsession. Our generation has forgotten the joys of talking about life and stuff not relating to trends.
i totally agree with this, but i don’t know what to do except go on my phone, laptop or kindle especially in quarantine. i’m a master procrastinator who hands in all assignments late (or never) which is really wrecking my school life. social media and films have been my escape :/. if you guys have any ideas of what to do except read books in quarantine i’d love to know 💞
@@blkbarbie2671 i really relate to this!! I'm slowly trying to take care of myself and do my assignments now, one by one, and so far it's going okay. My tips for what you can do is find a hobby! It can be like knitting/ crocheting (make cute clothes/bags/blankets etc. and it's really relaxing & fun to see the progress), baking and cooking for your family and make them happy, if you like drawing you can go outside with a sketchbook and headphones and sit somewhere and draw (take some food with you if u want!), i also want to try to start rollerblading when it gets a little warmer outside (: sorry if this is too much but i can write a lot more ideas if you want hehe
@@blkbarbie2671 I feel this :( If you would like some suggestions for how to do things different: First, maybe start consuming media in different ways. Love this video. I’ve been feeling the same way for a while. 6 months ago, I deleted all social media. Everything - Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. All gone. At first my hands would absentmindedly open my phone and try and pull up the apps (so strange how engrained these habits were). This lasted a couple of weeks, but after, I felt liberated. Sometimes it just music in the background, sometimes it’s talking to people, but I recognize it as a problem. I don’t like silence. I legitimately cannot stand silence. I’m an only child and reminds me of loneliness and the times I was just alone. I wish I would’ve done this last quarantine. I had soooo much free time last year that I wasted playing the game and mindlessly scrolling social media when could’ve been learning a new skill or picking up a new hobby:/
Just got done reading Cal Newport’s book, “Digital Minimalism”. It was really good. Phone addiction is a problem, especially among the GenZ group. I’ve deleted all social media accounts, and since doing that, I read 7 books in the month of January. Which is BIG for me! Normally I’d read 1-2 books a year!
Omggg girl this video was SOOO GOOD. The editing, message, all of it amazing!! girl u dominated!! Lol Also I feel so productive when I watch your content, like I actually learned and gained something. If I follow in your footsteps and try a digital detox, I wouldn’t be able to cut ur vids out of my life lol
I took a digital detox for a month last year. It was the most productive I've been since primary school😭💀 and then after a month and a few days I went back to my phone addiction. 🙂💔
Omg the Roman Holiday edit 😭😭 I don’t even want to look at my screen time, I know it’s ridiculously high. I’m able to keep my mind occupied with the task on hand and have a little break from social media for a bit
This is timely, I've spent the last week not checking Instagram and Twitter since those are the apps that cause me anxiety and it definitely has lowered my anxiety. Gotta work on TH-cam bc the time I used to spend on those apps is now spent on here and Libby reading. After I finish the book I'm reading, gonna read physical books and just disconnect for the rest of the weekend. Thanks for sharing your experience. Really like how this is edited!
Amanda should make a video about how you journal/what you journal about!! i've always struggled keeping up with journaling and have random journal entries months apart. I really want to consistently make time to write for myself but always feel worried that i'm not writing the "important" things. I would love to see her make a video on this!!!!
if u guys have 10-12 hrs on ur phone a day and u can't handle a full digital detox yet, then i suggest using ur laptop as a substitute since u can't carry it everywhere ^_^. social media is harder to navigate here. once u do that for a week or two then start disconnecting from ur laptop as well.
Honestly I feel the same but it's so hard not to spend time staring at a screen during quarantine because I have online class and I can not go outside with my friends because of covid. The only thing that I can do is reading but because libraries and bookstores are closed in my area I don't have that many options.
The scary thing to me is that people who didn't grow up with smartphones or internet have the same habits. When I think of my childhood, I realize I have an addiction
honestly same i was born in 97 and immigrated to another country when i was 9 so i was pretty much alone all the time and still am which sucks, so basically since i was 9 im constantly consuming media and cant stop cuz im lonely, depressed, tired of my thoughts and reality.
Congrats with the Detox. I’ve always wanted to disconnect but I just can’t stand the boredom 🥲. I’ve been trying to use my phone in more productive ways rather than just a distraction. So this video was definitely inspiring. Love your videos, thanks for all the hours of editing lol. Can’t wait for the next one
Not me watching this video on my laptop and being on insta on my phone at the same time... I used to have a healthy relationship with my screens but during the pandemic that relationship got *toxic*...
I stay in between the extremes of wanting to erase my digital footprint and having social media and using it constantly. I might need to go Henry David Thoreau.
This video finally convinced me to delete my most addicting social media apps and just go clean. My average screen time was 13 hours last week and my usual amount is 11 hours, I feel like it’s getting to the point where I feel like an addict
Fellow 21 year old with a tech addiction here 🙋🏾♀️ I know I need to do this at some point but I also know that it’ll be extremely difficult and I’ll end up on TH-cam again too
i feel like your hair improved over the digital detox. It looks MUCH fuller towards the end of the video as opposed to the beginning. Not that it was thin before, it just looks BETTER. GO GIRL!
i have been having this consumption problem as well… especially w being a senior in high school and feeling like the only way i can connect with my friends in the pandemic is through social media and texting. but, it's definitely spiraled into more than that lol. thx for this video!
girl are we living the same life? you always know how and when drop subjects that i'm thinking about myself! love your channel and i hope all of us can change and find a healthy relationship with technology
Yesss I love binge watching people talk about digital minimalism 😅 and then I share them in my community tab. Great video! 💕 I relate a lot and shared similar thoughts last summer in my video ‘Social Distance from Social Media’
ive been away from facebook, tiktok and instagram for three whole days going on four days. i do use snapchat but i dont have notifitions OFF and leave my phone away from me quite a bit. im so proud of myself and really want to see how it goes as i contiune. i'm not detoxing i'm hoping to not go on it at all ever. i'm gone from 5 1/2 hours to 11/2 hours I'm kicking my goals.
this video was so enjoyable! and i like how you didnt make excuse or tried to hide when you mess up. i read digital minimalism 2 years ago and with the pandemic have truly struggled with how much i use my phone. this vid reminded to go reread and try again :)
When I took a break from social media my phone time average also went down to 45 min - 1h, and it felt so???? GOOD?????? And for the first time in a really long time I actually felt care-free, EVERYONE needs to try this.
This would’ve been a HARD test for me to do‼️Thank you for trying this experiment. I know it’s not easy for you, especially because you’re a huge content creator. Thank you for guiding us and thank you for adding the Nicki Minaj instrumental again😂🎼
Great video, Amanda! I've been slowly detoxing over the last half a year or so, and I think I've successfully detached from social media and mindless consumption. E.g. the only social media I use is a private insta with only 20 friends & I stopped using Netflix. Even still, there's so much good and useful content to absorb, so I find myself using my laptop & phone a lot. So my next step is to drive down my screen time and shift to non-screen fulfilment like books and writing by hand. (And maybe actually learning how to play my guitar??)
15:42 see I’m kind of in the middle on this topic. I’m someone who holds conversations through text. I rarely send one text message of a meme and just move on. I usually text someone from hours on end about who knows what because I enjoy conversation. I do think FaceTime is better but I realize that it’s inconvenient for a lot of people. But what I do do (lol) is I send audio messages. I really only send audio messages to one of my friends but she’s the person I talk to the most anyways. And even though it’s not complete connection it grounds me in a way, and reminds me that it’s a real person on the other side. And then when I see her again (we live in the same state but she goes to a different school also Coronavirus so I’m only seeing her in like 6 month intervals) it’s not that weird to have a back and forth conversation. I have a couple of friends that I do just check in on and we just send a short text to each other or a meme, and I’m not a fan. I don’t really know how to have conversations with them because I’m used to sending short bits to them and not having a full convo.
I am so glad you are recognizing this dilemma most face when growing up surrounded by technology. ❤ It gives me hope for my daughter. I'm worried for her, she's still so small.
As an elder millennial, I can remember part of a childhood without technology. I was so happy and free as a child. Then I began using social media in my late teens and that began taking up a lot of my time. Then after smart phones were introduced, it was all downhill from there. I now spend 4-5 hours a day consistently on my phone and I think it does carry a lot of weight mentally. I miss interacting with real people, so I've been trying to be more intentional with my time and actually spend it talking to friends and family. I also try to keep in mind the productive things I could be doing, instead of just mindlessly staring at my phone for hours.
Pro-tip: You can set app timers on your phone. Idk where for Iphones but for android it's under settings and digital wellness! I have an hour set for apps like IG and tiktok. You can obviously change it (I give myself more allowance when i'm feeling ill or somewhere with literaly nothing else to do) but generally it's more annoying to change the setting than to just find something else to do. It's been very helpful for me. Also if you aren't ready to give it up all together, make one day of the week a no social media day- My sundays are no social days! I try to fill my time reading (which is still on a screen but not mindless scrolling), or one of my hobbies. And if all else fails sometimes I lay and listen to music and think.
I work in a retail store that's commission based, something that I've noticed is everyone watches their phones unless they're talking to somebody. I've seen one guy doomscroll while still in the process of a sale rather than making conversation. you can only imagine the terrible "vibes." I've noticed doomscrolling makes me sad or angry or irritable. Definitely leaving that job once I hit the year mark at least.
This was such a lovely video, I think we can all do much better in terms if curating a healthy relationship with social media, there is only so much we can blame on these apps. But it definitely takes time, thanks for your transparency! 💙
I would love to see more videos like this! Back in October I deleted almost all my social media apps, with Quora & TH-cam being the exceptions. I still have to work on digital addiction but it was a huge step getting rid of Instagram
This was a great video, I think Gen z specially battles with so much screen addiction. Proud of you for trying to change that! :) also, love your fashion sense!
I’m doing this now! Mostly because Instagram is close to removing my account because of modelling shoots being reported so I’m seeing it as take a detox!
i also dropped my airpod in the drain and all i could think to do is look up a youtube video about how to get something out of a drain but i literally took my drain apart and got it back LOL addiction!!
It's really helpful for me to think of my phone as a tool and delete all apps that aren't serving a function. The real issue is my time on my laptop, I literally spend my entire life on my laptop.
I would love to begin this journey but currently am living in a region that is in full lockdown so the only way to connect with people aside from my partner is through my phone... any tips or tricks for doing this while not being able to see friends would be awesome
I've realized that I don't have any actual hobbies. All I do for fun is consume content - browse social media, listen to music, watch Netflix and TH-cam, and play video games. I'm trying to change this but it's all I've done for so long that I genuinely don't where to start. I don't know what else I enjoy because I've been pacifying myself with my phone for as long as I can remember. Even sitting still and trying to think without any distractions is hard.
Try tracking your computer usage using 'rescue time' or something so you see how long you stay on it plus ur phone so u have a clearer picture. When I did that and saw that once I spent 11 hours of my day in front of a screen I freaked and manage to cut down from tech significantly! But anyway loved the vid! 🤗
The thing is that I don’t have any socials except tiktok and TH-cam (I don’t have friends and I recently left Twitter). all I do is binge anime and play roblox in between 💀 I have very strict parents so going on isn’t an option so im not proud of having an average of 10 hours on my phone and tablet but it’s not like if I had many other things to do 💀
i deleted instagram from my phone half a year ago and its so relieving for me, leaves much more room for other thoughts not centering around other people/content you see on the app. definitely miss following my favorite artists but also I#m able to develop my own personality without influence ; if ypure thinking about digital detox def do it, youll see nothing on there is real

if u guys have 10-12 hrs on ur phone a day and u can't handle a full digital detox yet, then i suggest using ur laptop as a substitute since u can't carry it everywhere ^_^. social media is harder to navigate here. once u do that for a week or two then start disconnecting from ur laptop as well.
I honestly need a digital detox yet my job is literally social media 😅
same page
Oof yuuuuup 🙋🏽♀️
thisss
LMAOOOOOOO yep.... That’s my life too😭🤦🏾♂️
Me af 🥴
Honestly I feel the same but it's so hard not to spend time staring at a screen during quarantine because I have online class and I can not go outside with my friends because of covid. The only thing that I can do is reading but because libraries and bookstores are closed in my area I don't have that many options.
The scary thing to me is that people who didn't grow up with smartphones or internet have the same habits. When I think of my childhood, I realize I have an addiction
My 12 hour daily average makes me feel so bad 😂
Same girl
it is an addiction, addictions are illness not choice.... don't beat yourself up, try recovering
Ooooof really felt this -> tech as a tool, not pacifier. Thank you for sharing your experience with digital detoxing as a gen z keke
honestly same i was born in 97 and immigrated to another country when i was 9 so i was pretty much alone all the time and still am which sucks, so basically since i was 9 im constantly consuming media and cant stop cuz im lonely, depressed, tired of my thoughts and reality.
I used to have a healthy relationship with my screens but during the pandemic that relationship got *toxic*...
a digital detox video is what i needed 😭
I stay in between the extremes of wanting to erase my digital footprint and having social media and using it constantly. I might need to go Henry David Thoreau.
Literally me every 2 days
This video finally convinced me to delete my most addicting social media apps and just go clean. My average screen time was 13 hours last week and my usual amount is 11 hours, I feel like it’s getting to the point where I feel like an addict
the carrot cake moment was everything.
Fellow 21 year old with a tech addiction here 🙋🏾♀️ I know I need to do this at some point but I also know that it’ll be extremely difficult and I’ll end up on TH-cam again too
I’ve been trying to do this too! And I actually started sewing again! Which is cool
Your voice is so soothing … and you’re so articulate when you speak 🗣
i feel like your hair improved over the digital detox.
There is a french movie called 'Populaire ' that is a romance but the movie is about a girl that decides to participate in a typing competition.
girl are we living the same life? you always know how and when drop subjects that i'm thinking about myself! love your channel and i hope all of us can change and find a healthy relationship with technology
This makes me want to go back to the Kim Possible call me beep me days of the flip phone 📟
I’m so excited to watch the viddddd
Pencil illustration is a good hobby to Start
Been doing it on & off for years 😊
I'm not even 7 seconds into this video, but I already subscribed, because your vibes are AMAZING IDEK WHAT THAT MEANS BUT I FEEL LIKE UR SO COOL
this video was so enjoyable!
and i like how you didnt make excuse or tried to hide when you mess up. i read digital minimalism 2 years ago and with the pandemic have truly struggled with how much i use my phone. this vid reminded to go reread and try again :)
your energy is so refreshing
I completely agree, while I’m sitting here soaking radiation from my phone into my face 🥲
Inspired by you. I'm starting my digital declutter tomorrow! wrote about it here: rozdub.medium.com
It gives me hope for my daughter. I'm worried for her, she's still so small.
I took Twitter off my phone. Was hugely useful. If only I could do the same with TH-cam....
TH-cam is not a problem! If you feel comfortable with youtube then you do!! But otherwise any media don’t sit right with you, DELETE ITTT 👏🏽
@@journeyofmylife2103 TH-cam is very addicting and it's designed to be that way.
I also try to keep in mind the productive things I could be doing, instead of just mindlessly staring at my phone for hours.
i feel so bad for gen z we’re all addicted to our phones
my daily average is like 8 hours a day just on my phone its got worse in the pandemic since i stay at home 24/7 and uni is fully online
I still have to work on digital addiction but it was a huge step getting rid of Instagram
this is a fantastic idea!!
I just finished my 24-hr internet/phone break for the book How To Break Up With Your Phone by Catherine Price! So cool you're on the same journey
This was a great video, I think Gen z specially battles with so much screen addiction. Proud of you for trying to change that! :) also, love your fashion sense!
I’m doing this now! Mostly because Instagram is close to removing my account because of modelling shoots being reported so I’m seeing it as take a detox!
i also dropped my airpod in the drain and all i could think to do is look up a youtube video about how to get something out of a drain but i literally took my drain apart and got it back LOL addiction!!
after watching your two most recent videos, you've inspired me to go on a digital detox too! time to start a life of just being mindful. thank you!
It sucks so bad, I need to do something about it too
I just found your channel, and I AM OBSESSED. I love your energy!
I’m so glad I found this video, I want to start doing this process but I can’t stop watching your videos hëlp
My record is about 15 hours I need to stop 💀
It's really helpful for me to think of my phone as a tool and delete all apps that aren't serving a function.
The real issue is my time on my laptop, I literally spend my entire life on my laptop.
i'm definitely going to try this! can't wait to watch this video :)
I honestly love whatever you decide to upload ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
I would love to begin this journey but currently am living in a region that is in full lockdown so the only way to connect with people aside from my partner is through my phone... any tips or tricks for doing this while not being able to see friends would be awesome
Maybe just keep the apps that you use for communicating with Friends and Family and delete all content Based social media.
Ooo good idea thanks!!
The thing is that I don’t have any socials except tiktok and TH-cam (I don’t have friends and I recently left Twitter). all I do is binge anime and play roblox in between 💀 I have very strict parents so going on isn’t an option so im not proud of having an average of 10 hours on my phone and tablet but it’s not like if I had many other things to do 💀
when my addiction leads me to this video. I have 11 hours average lmaoo
i deleted instagram from my phone half a year ago and its so relieving for me, leaves much more room for other thoughts not centering around other people/content you see on the app. definitely miss following my favorite artists but also I#m able to develop my own personality without influence ; if ypure thinking about digital detox def do it, youll see nothing on there is real
I have covid and have to stay inside completely at the moment, and my screen time on one day spiked to 11 hours and 37 minutes..........OK :|
The little animations😭😭 the little animations😻
do you have a goodreads or would you ever make a book recommendations video? really interested by the books you mentioned, seems like you have excellent taste lol
Thank you! I don’t have good reads but I could definitely try to make a vid like that!
omg yay! can't wait to see it :)))
I needed this! I'm going to start using my phone as little as possible.
This video was so interesting! There is a book called "How to Break Up With Your Phone" that talks about how to reduce screen time, I found it was really helpful to cut down how much I was on my phone 😊
I love how honest this video is !!!
Just got my Pfizer #2, so it'll be good to get out there and away from this screentime opium fog.
Just found your channel and love your voice!
hey can you make a video on how to afford NYU 🙁 i been seeing tik toks on how financial aid and how it’s terrible and i just want to know from first hand experience
Just know that this video is ON TIME. Thank you.
the grayscale trick is amazing. thanks for sharing!
