    I have one of these and a Valor - reconditioned both - and they work well. However, learnt of the 'space age' Inverter paraffin heaters.
    After much searching, finally found a supplier and bought one. They're Japanese made and although very sophisticated come with a 4 year guarantee.
    Essentially, you just press a button and out comes fan assisted hot air, up to 4kW on my model - you can get bigger ones.
    Still keeping my old ones; the Inverter does need a mains electric plug to work its CO sensor and ignition apparatus.

    You don't want to toss water on a kerosene fire. Use flour or cornmeal or something to smother it as soon as possible. Water will just cause it to spread and the kero will ride on top of the water.

    Very nice heater. I have an Aladdin model 37 also, and just like yours the wick is stiff going up and down. Real nice to have a heater when you have to work out in the garage or what have you. Good vid. Best wishes from Canada.

    The danger is in lack of O2 and excess of CO2. Carbon monoxide is not an issue with blue flames because the blue in the fire indicates carbon monoxide has been eliminated

    I have an aladdinette for my greenhouse. But after an alcohol washout, it's now my living room heater but with bioethanol in it. It's clean burning and can be used safely indoors. It works great and is miles cheaper than putting the gas heating on. No way I'm doing that this year.

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally speaking, using an aromatic fuel (one which evaporates easily such as alcohols or petrols) in an Aladdin can pose an explosion risk, I really wouldn't recommend using it with bioethanol! That aside, bioethanol is rather expensive, I bought 40L of premium paraffin a year ago for £75 before fuel prices went nuts, but looking at bio bulk prices, that price wouldn't get me half that volume, eye-wateringly expensive stuff... :S

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's certainly a useful heater, and puts out plenty heat even on a low flame, just remember if using in a confined space, such as your suggesiton, to have plenty of ventilation as it will deplete oxygen from the air, as well as have a working Carbon Monoxide alarm in the space too... :)

    • @Jollyprez
      @Jollyprez 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRottenShed While it certainly will deplete oxygen, kerosene heaters do NOT produce much carbon-monoxide. Unvented propane heaters are much worse about that. And, of course, would vent.

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      CO can be produced when oxygen levels become dangerously low by any flame, the CO alarm is just a recommended safety thing as a just in case measure... :)

      They're decent heaters, though when it comes to fuel use, if they're set low, they can last a good while on one 4L jug of paraffin, though I've not measured that rate of use myself. And yeah, they need the chimney fitting fully to produce the blue flame properly... :)

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A few things to check; if the wick is worn and isn't rasing up high enough, that can prevent a blue flame; if it's missing the flame spreader in the middle (the cup thing with all the small holes in it) that will stop it as well, and lastly; an ill-fitting chimney (E.G. it or the burner being damaged from being dropped) would cause the same issue...

    • @TheRottenShed

      You can indeed, they're intended for indoor use (indoors basically defined as anywhere that is four walls and a roof of somesort) and the heat they out out is pretty decent, can make a room quite toasty within an hour depending on the size... :)

    Am in the process of restoring an Aladdinette II and wonder if anyone has any background info. as to when these were introduced and their history etc? They have a '70s look about them!

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are some sites with history on them, but I can say that the Aladdinette II dates as far back as the 60s, as my mother (born in '56) recalls refuelling & lighting them as a child back then, I can't really add much more to that myself, but it's worth a search on google or something... :)

    • @jimsimpson1006
      @jimsimpson1006 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say more likely 1960s. By the 1970s, nearly all paraffin heaters had a safety device fitted to the chimney which automatically extinguished the flame if the heater was knocked over.

    Where did you get your metal wick trimmer? The modern plastic ones just don't cut it. Literally. My Aladdinette burns just like yours, uneven at the back, and the plastic wick trimmer can't fix it, even when I let the wick dry out first, as the experts recommend. Lovely heater otherwise.

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  ปีที่แล้ว

      It came with the heater, if you check ebay there's sometimes metal wick trimmers available cheaply, I found my 1 inch wick trimmer on there for my lamps for very little a couple years before I made this video, so they can be had. They are also not meant to 'cut' the wick, you need to char the wick properly before trimming (instructions are easy to find online), and the trim is basically just skimming off excess char to make for a nice, even burn... :)

    • @jayawilder3835
      @jayawilder3835 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRottenShed thanks for this answer. I thought I'd solved the uneven burning problem by installing a new wick. It burned blue for half a day, then burned yellow all round. When I tried to adjust it, it started burning red. Never seen anything like this. I'm at a loss! I will drain the tank and try to char the wick as you suggest, maybe that will fix it.

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Usually when a yellow flame happens the wick is too low, or way too high, or there could be a blockage in the airways in the burner (these can be taken apart, though often with a bit of difficulty as the metal gets stuck over time), and as for red, I have never seen that myself, that would indicate that the flame actually went out and the wick was just smouldering, but hard to say without seeing it for myself! I would also make sure you have the right fuel (C1 Paraffin in the UK, or K1/1K Kerosene in north america), other fuels don't tend to work well and can contaminate wicks making them burn oddly even with the right fuels...

    • @jayawilder3835
      @jayawilder3835 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRottenShed nope, not smouldering. Actual red flame! Seriously, I grew up with Esso Blue, or Pink Paraffin in the 1960's. I'm currently using Bartoline and Barratine from Amazon Uk or B and Q. I've never before seen an actual red flame or even a yellow one that couldn't be fixed by turning the wick up or down, or trimming it. Colour me gobsmacked. I'll maybe dismantle the burner and wash it with ethanol, if you think there might be a blockage. Many thanks for the advice.

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  ปีที่แล้ว

      That certainly is very strange, I have no idea how a red flame could happen in these heaters!! Rather got me wondering about that now! As for the fuel, yeah, those are the usual brands, I was using Caldo stuff myself but sellers decided to up the price, so just bulk-bought 40L of the stuff from ebay, right before the fuel prices rose, only used when absolutely needed though!

      I've not done a video using the wick cleaner, it's a simple tool though, remove the flame spreader, place the trimmer over the wick, raise the wick 'til it just starts to lift the trimmer, then press down and turn the trimmer clockwise a few times, and that's it, just reassemble and the flame should be nice and even again... :)

      They can go through fuel faster than a flat-wick lamp or heater, for a greenhouse I'd say turn the flame down as low as it'll go before losing its' blue flame, they do put out a lot of heat so don't need to go full-blast, but due to the nature of how they work they will use more paraffin. Also make sure to keep an eye on them for the first hour or so as when they heat up the flame will get bigger and thus use even more fuel, once you get used to them though it's easy to get the levels right...
