How to Become an Exotic Animal Veterinarian

- In this video I discuss my path towards becoming an exotic animal veterinarian. The road to becoming an exotic vet is hard and requires many years of experience, but it's definitely one worth pursuing. There are many aspects of veterinary school that will determine acceptance into exotic animal residencies such as grades, research, clinical skills, leadership, and connections, which I'll explain my thoughts on. I will also discuss what I've done to prepare myself for the different kinds of residency programs.
This is what I’ve always wanted to do! Take care of exotic animals! I’m 14 and I hope and pray that I’ll have a great future job like yours! 😄

i can NOT wait to start my journey into exotic veterinary medicine!! it’s awesome to get as much experience as soon as you can! I’ve volunteered a lot with local biology programs and i also have a internship with a local exotic vet hospital!!! Thank you so much for sharing your story and how you made your dream a reality

I am wondering what the financial burden of each of these paths toward exotic animal medicine is? I am currently applying to vet school now and am already looking at the bill, yay, do you have the option of getting paid during these internships and while you work towards board certification?

Hi! I think that if you are more into nursing the animals and prepping them then a vet tech is right for you, but if you enjoy diagnosis, surgery and continuing education then being a vet is the way to go!

Well vet techs don't make a lot of money since some States require certification and some do not.
What can I do to get experience if I don't live near any zoos?

Not sure what your age is but 4-H can help give you experiences with many different types of animals if you are still school age. My daughter was told that gaining experience with rabbits and horses is a great way to start out. The pet rabbit project is very informative. I know you were asking her, but we have had the same questions come up. 👍

So if you went to college for 4 years and then went to vet school for 4 years, would that mean you'd graduate with a PhD?
I think vet med pathway is similar to medicine particularly in the US. after graduating from vet school, u became GP, then u go to residency for specialization.
Can u tell me how much does a veterinarian earn in US on an average?

You can specialize in whatever type you want to work with for example, marine, exotic mammals, ornithology and even herps

I think so I used to work at a clinic that did exotic and dogs and cats
Bruh why so complicated, in India you become a vet at 24 and can practice any species you want. This is so lame.
