1:46 my dad on trombone Ray Sims. Thank you for the video. He has long since passed away but it's cool to have so many ways to still see him.

I was in a band that traded sets with Harry at Harrah's in Reno back in 1965 or '66 and what a treat to listen to this band every night. Harry loved his Keno and actually hit the $25,000 prize while we were there. His comment: "I think I'm close to breaking even now." He was a very cool guy. Very real.

this man is for me like daily bread! I'm happy that he was living on this world and that he could give to us these famous songs! I love trumpet, i love Harry, I love my grandfather (he was the best trumpet man in Czech Republic, now he has swing orchestra of Vaclav Hlavac). I have played on trumpet for 13 years and I hope, that i will be good at least my grandfather, but this man is god for me! As the same like Ferguson:)

I had the privilege of accompanying HJ on the piano when he came to our college to perform -- I had never heard a trumpet go that high before and he could "tongue it" faster than I'd ever heard, even double-tongue it! -- it was very exciting! He was incredible! One of the very best ever on that instrument!

What an awesome band---man I love it right after Harry James announces that they're going to play "Don't Be That Way" that orchestra just THUNDERS right into the opening riff!! They had a POWERHOUSE sound along with superb musicians---it's a damn shame there isn't more recorded output from this band--IMHO one of the greatest big-bands of all time!!

I saw and danced several times. He never had to warm up, and very approacable.. An avid baseball fan . Was in St. Pete area every spring, for bookings, so to see his Cardinals play. Great guy.

Brilliant! I am yet to hear a big band replicate that amazing sound and electricity that the Harry James band had. Also gotta love Buddy Rich's amazing penmanship on the kit, he just nails it.

harrys solo in 1936 at carnigie hall with benny was perhaps one of the greatest solos ever played ..dont know who arranged that sing sing sing chart but who ever did made a really great arrangement showing off each artist back then ,
and yes it was written by louie prima a new orleans trumpet player .

Buddy's stick twirl at the end of a number was like a gunslinger about to reholster his 45. And make no mistake he was and always will be the master drum gunslinger.

Great drummer, maybe the greatest ever, but Buddy Rich, was, in mine and several others' opinions, a world-class a-hole for the way he treated his musicians. Ooh I bet this gets a lot of ranty thumbs downs, or who's with me?

He also had an acid personality and a brain tumor. Which came first? He was respected as a hot drummer, but very few people actually liked him.

Just before entering the stage at Carnegie Hall with Benny Goodman in 1938, Harry James muttered "I feel like a whore in church". True story.

Where Artie Shaw once had to convince Billie Holiday to use the service elevator of the hotel where they were performing because blacks werent allowed in the regular elevators, James had his whole band to pack up when told a hotel didnt have a room for one black bandmate. The hotel gave in.

@swiftflag2 April, I don't remember your name in association with Harry, but I think I remember it with Sam Donahue--maybe when he was in Reno?? Did you ever perform with Sam?? And, did you tour with Harry, or were you more stationary?? Thanks, B.

That was strange. Buddy picked up a triangle about 3/4's thru and played it and then put it down. It looks like it may have been an edit from another song, put in this one.

    Funny!
Despite all the glitz his womanizing (his piano player Jess Stacy once asked,"Do you have to get laid eery night?"), his high-profile marriages (Betty Grable was the love of his life, as its turns out), public displays (he once punched out actor George Raft at the Palladium) and excessive gambling, James was also a person who stood up for blacks in an era rife with racism. He was a man who loved his band and stood by them.
