This performance was less than a year before Benny Goodman died. It is very pleasant and touching to see these older couples listening and dancing to the music they grew up with. They look like they were having such a good time. Wish I was there...
I saw this program when it was first broadcast, had to pinch myself when I realized "Holy s*, it's 1985 and I'm watching the Benny Goodman band live and in full gallop!" If only we'd been able to hear Shaw, Miller, and the Dorseys under the same circumstances ... Reportedly this program was to test out the band for a new series of concerts. But as you noted, we lost him shortly afterwards.
How many people thought Benny Goodman, if they had even heard of him, was some kind of shooting star who faded out in the 1940's? No, he was swinging and creative right up to the end of his life. And don't let anyone think of this music as a nostalgia trip. It is timeless - and there are countless young people out there still doing it.
I saw Benny in about 1985. He had them turn the sound system off, saying "If you can't hear, come down front. But you'll be able to hear. We play loud enough for dancing, that's the whole point. Feel free to dance if you want, that's what this music is for." Few danced but we could hear and he played beautifully.
Can't stop watching this video. If this performance isn't perfection, it is as close as you can get. It gives me mental images of that generation...The Greatest Generation.
Gladdens my heart to hear Benny playing music he made popular 50 years prior...Just shows that great music does not age. 👍 Benny passed away a year after this was recorded.
Watched this video for maybe my 1000th time. I am still hearing wonderful notes and sounds that tell me what the Greatest Generation was all about. MY PARENTS!!! Just Fantastic!!!
Just fabulous - how wonderful to see genius masquerading as a humble band leader. How civilised the world was back then - and the musicians could all play - having studied for 20 years to get to this level of skill. Wonderful music - wonderful era.
This man and a few other orchestra leaders are what I thought were the "end of the world", when I first heard them play back in the day. The incomparable Benny Goodman, was the man who got folk's feet to tapping across the globe. I can't praise him highly enough. Truly a great guy .
The joy he has performing this is something special, and that smile at the end says it all. Enough to bring a tear of joy to your eye as I’m sure this takes him back to the glory days. Thank you for sharing!
I love this video clip. Just look at those grandmas and grandpas enjoying themselves. It looks like they are still in their 20s. I can't see myself dancing to contemporary music when I am at the they are now. How disappointing. Maybe there a few exceptions. I'm keen to hear from those who'll be dancing to contemporary popular music in their over 50s. The senior with lady in green looks like Sir Alex Ferguson. They are my favorite couple in the room.
My wife and I have danced all our lives (now 71 y/o). Lucky enough to catch some big bands in the 60s and 70s now they seem to be mostly gone. Now we dance to country western music at least once a week with the same 2-step we love and a little 'jitterbug' thrown in. Still lots of great dancing here in Arizona, especially during the winter when all us 'snowbirds' fill the bars and halls. We are lucky!
Louis Bellson must always always be included in any discussion of great Jazz drummers ! He invented the double bass drum while with Duke Ellington's orchestra.
This is when America was AMERICA! What a great musician, what a great band leader! This music was made for moving the feet! The wife and I, on a 10 hour road trip, after 7 hours listening to Series 40's Junction realize there was no sappy sad music to bog you down... since then huge fan of this music ! Bring Back swing!
louis bellson was terrific and also a very nice man....one of benny's many tunes from the goodman 'book'-he has to be remembering back to the old days & is getting a genuine kick out of seeing people enjoying the music & dancing....
Katalina
The great Benny, first heard him about '59 when a friend of mine gave me Benny at Carnegie Hall, played it to destruction, bought it again LP style, still have it, then, the holy of holys, Benny's attic find of the original, non-edited full concert, Jesus, a dead sea scrolls equivalent, if you are reading this then you are a fan of music, real music, unfortunately I have lost my e-mail connection so. sorry if I do not reply
Ah yes. This music dates from an era before tech wizardey manipulated the finished sound. In tose days if a musician couldn't play well enough, he didn't eat.
I love how both Benny and the drummer look so happy while they are playing. You don't see that nowadays with this shit people call music. Today, there is no such thing as "in tune".
Oh My..to see Goodman while listening to him..wonderful. See those shoulders go..and his legs move!! He really lived his music. I read his biography..good read!! Is that Louis Belson on drums??? With a very bad hair piece..I saw Louis Belson backing Tony Bennett at the Chevron Silver Spade Room in Sydney when I was 18..I was sitting so close to Tony Bennett I could have touched him!! Belson was, of course, terrific!. And Mr Bennett..(am I spelling his name correctly??) was sublime!! Americans have always had the best musos, singers... and the most interesting!! Good on you guys!!
It is so great that all these masters playing so always so great till their last years. Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson started their career in the 1930s and they bring so much joy to all people till their last year's in the 1980s.
While his band was great, his small group of Goodman, Krupa, Wilson and Hampton, was unbelievable! Of all the other small groups back then, they were the best...
Sorry but you're wrong. Many fine bands since and still going. Check out BBC Big Band, Sid Laurence and lots of great European bands like Thilo Wolf. Many others of course, these only a few examples.
Even towards the end of his life, Benny sounded just as good as he did in the 1930s...He passed away in June of 86; just about nine months after this show...probably one of his very last if not the last I imagine.
This clip so touching on many levels. Not only was this one of Goodman's last performances but look at the crowd. All these gray haired and bald men with their wives of many years dancing and enjoying themselves as if time had never changed. I find that beautiful.
No, no no!! I was living in NYC in 1985!!! I also missed him in Santa Barbara, he cancelled a concert in the late 1970s or early 1980s. And that ios Krupa on drums!
I just had to comment on your remarks. I laughed like the devil, because as good as Benny Goodman is in this video, you're right, the video portion of the audience at some points is not so hot. That the cameraman was cleaning his lens with butter is an apt and funny description of what he might have been doing. Thanks for the laugh.
Benny Goodman 1985 at The New York Marriott Marquis th-cam.com/play/PLrPaVntmR59tGQC-IYWFXfi1yoDxyTk9k.html
The best music of the USA.
Geweldig🎉🎉
My Mom and dad's music.....but I don't care whether you are 12 or 82.....It don't get no better!!!!
Spot on. I'm 82 on 2nd Sept . Grew up with this and still play drums.
Opened (as usual) with "Let’s Dance", followed by "Don’t Be That Way". Pure GOLD!!!
This performance was less than a year before Benny Goodman died. It is very pleasant and touching to see these older couples listening and dancing to the music they grew up with.
They look like they were having such a good time. Wish I was there...

Reportedly this program was to test out the band for a new series of concerts. But as you noted, we lost him shortly afterwards.
We shall never see the likes of this kind of talent in our time again,at least here on earth.
this was a gem in his Carnegie hall concert in 1938 !!!

I could not have said it better myself, the performance and music is a manifestation of "The Greatest Generation".
Fabulous, flawless, sophisticated music of the big band era. It will never be duplicated.
I notice a few people gave this the thumbs down ?? Why 😬 .. Benny playing one of his wonderful numbers from the early 1930s is sheer magic 👍🏼!!
Gladdens my heart to hear Benny playing music he made popular 50 years prior...Just shows that great music does not age. 👍 Benny passed away a year after this was recorded.
50 years after that first trip across the country (1935) to California and the birth of swing and BG still looks and plays great.
This was a real America.........when anybody dreams came thru......God Bless America
AMAZING!!! Just look at the way he still FEELS the music!!! Great genius, great man indeed.
Watched this video for maybe my 1000th time. I am still hearing wonderful notes and sounds that tell me what the Greatest Generation was all about. MY PARENTS!!! Just Fantastic!!!
Benny Goodman alone on UTube is reason enough to have a computer at any price.
DITTO
I cannot agree more!!!!
What a treat to have heard and danced to this glorious music, live.
Very well know tune and with this version plenty of top players....Ken Peplowski, Bob Haggart, Louis Bellson....even is better.Super!!!
Just fabulous - how wonderful to see genius masquerading as a humble band leader. How civilised the world was back then - and the musicians could all play - having studied for 20 years to get to this level of skill. Wonderful music - wonderful era.
broxmouth truly one of the classiest gentleman ever I love don't be that way
This gives me some really high quality tears and sets my feet a tapping. ❤🎶

Yes man quality music from one good weather ! I'm 40 years old and I like it a lot !!!
My wife and I have danced all our lives (now 71 y/o). Lucky enough to catch some big bands in the 60s and 70s now they seem to be mostly gone. Wow! What a treat! This is the music I could hear coming from my dad's bedroom every night from his record player!!!
Wonder what it is like to stand on a stage knowing you are a living, breathing legend.
Hard to think about right?
All great musicians but ....Dick Hyman, Louis Bellson, Bob Haggart . Rhythm section made in heaven.
Louie Bellson!! 'Nuff said!!!!
Apart from his fabulous playing, I like his cool minimalist conducting of the band. He knew what he wanted and how to get it.
THAT IS music.
One of the best of the big band era 💜
Louis Bellson must always always be included in any discussion of great Jazz drummers !
He invented the double bass drum while with Duke Ellington's orchestra.
he was also the husband of the great Pearl Bailey until her death in 1990

Wow! Benny was old. He still sounded really good.
Bloody good old days and swing!
One of the greatest band performances in history!!!

This song is kinda celestial, it makes me cry, especially for the sax section.
Some good shit right here. Smh no one in my generation gets it. There’s no musically in what they listen to, this though is absolutely amazing!
What a great music, it's unbelievable, that todays music is only noise with a beat.
Look at all the couples actually dancing! I love it
The great Benny, first heard him about '59 when a friend of mine gave me Benny at Carnegie Hall, played it to destruction, bought it again LP style, still have it, then, the holy of holys, Benny's attic find of the original, non-edited full concert, Jesus, a dead sea scrolls equivalent, if you are reading this then you are a fan of music, real music, unfortunately I have lost my e-mail connection so. sorry if I do not reply
Tight, swings, some really good players. Big memories of the number.
Wow, still on top of his game at 80. Love this!
I know right
Actually he was 76. Born in 1909, passed away only about a year after this video was made.
When people got dressed up and listened to real music played by geniuses. I swing dance with girls in their 20s and they love it!
Ah yes. This music dates from an era before tech wizardey manipulated the finished sound. In tose days if a musician couldn't play well enough, he didn't eat.

Good music from some good times !!!!!!!
I love how both Benny and the drummer look so happy while they are playing. You don't see that nowadays with this shit people call music. Today, there is no such thing as "in tune".
The drummer is the late great Louis Bellson. Always wore a smile.
Don’t forget he was 75 yrs old here!
Good as it gets. BG opening with Don't Be That Way. That's the 30s swing era
Trade mark of Benny!

I'M 68.AND I LOVE IT
I love this song !
love to see great artists still performing well in their later years. His version of Perfidia is a favorite.
Benny Goodman was 76 during this performance in 1985
While his band was great, his small group of Goodman, Krupa, Wilson and Hampton, was unbelievable! Of all the other small groups back then, they were the best...
This is probably the latest date in history that you will hear a dance band playing in tune.
Sorry but you're wrong. Many fine bands since and still going. Check out BBC Big Band, Sid Laurence and lots of great European bands like Thilo Wolf. Many others of course, these only a few examples.
Excellent.
Thanks for the posting.
Sends cold chills up my back.

This clip so touching on many levels. Not only was this one of Goodman's last performances but look at the crowd. All these gray haired and bald men with their wives of many years dancing and enjoying themselves as if time had never changed. I find that beautiful.
The Goodman sound never gets old!!
Great stuff!!!!!!

Benny Goodman! Saudades!
No, no no!! I was living in NYC in 1985!!! I also missed him in Santa Barbara, he cancelled a concert in the late 1970s or early 1980s. And that ios Krupa on drums!
It isn't Gene Krupa. This concert is from 1985. Krupa died in 1973. That's Louie Bellson on drums.
He was SOOooo good!!
VERY GOOD JAZZ, BYE, FRED ITALY MILANO, CIAO.
So Very good! Love it!
This's fucking excellent song
Why do you have to use the F word? Doesn't add anything to your statement.
Foul mouth, what's the point?
Benny was 76 when this was made
