    One of the most awesomest things I have ever seen. A twin ultralight! Brilliant inverted beach tail. I would love to see the rigging.

    That's interesting; I thought he had a bit of a misfire at first, but then realised that the brrrm, brrrm, was due to the engines running at very slightly different speeds, so the props are going in and out of phase. Luftwaffe bombers were set up like that deliberately in WWII, so as to make it harder for sound locators to get an accurate fix on them.

    They sound great Pete! Only thing I wonder if they have em geared properly.. like maybe into the torque-curve a few more RPMs. Just seems a bit "labored" but way better than the Rotax snowmobile engs that sound like they're ready to blow capt'n! haha. Love your vids! Stay safe

    • @19pete38
      @19pete38  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good observation guy.. I'm getting 5300 rpm out of this set up and l'm pretty satisfied with it...l've got a set of 42/24 gsc props l'd like to try instead of the 44/24's on there now...get the rpm up to 5500 maybe for TO.. as it stands l'm getting about a 10% increase in performance over the old Rotax setup..

    • @idontneednostinkingchannel6848
      @idontneednostinkingchannel6848 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check w/mfg on them Hondas and see where the "sweet-spot" is on the torque curve. There's the RPM you're shooting for. You surprised me to hear you are turning 5300! Guess it just didn't sound that high but now that I ran this a few more times, I hear it. Nothing wrong w/what you have Pete - and you're the boss when that gear lifts off the grass! Whatever makes you happy at the end of the day. A little less "bite" with a 42 pitch will push your top end and exploit that peak envelope (55?) for a more efficient (probable smoother) TO. Nothing like a little reserve when you need it ain't? Going in for L4-L5 back surgery Thursday so I'm out (hope for just the season).. Doc says its just old age catchin-up. So "smoke em while you got em old-man". Have yourself a good summer! Blue Skies Capt'n! - Ask power company to put some nice big orange markers on em wires over that pea-patch!

    Did you remove the flywheel fans? It looks like if you leave them on, the air stream coming from the propeller will go against the air blown out by the flywheel fan and possibly interfere with cooling.

    • @19pete38
      @19pete38  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think l did, but it makes sense to remove' em.. they rob a bit of power too...thanks for bringing that up.!!

    I've been reading many of the comments and questions in your video posts and the thing that stands out the most to me is your extensive knowledge. I'm curious to know if this is due to you simply getting in your garage/shop and tinkering,or a more formal education method?

    I like your Lazair re-engine project using the Honda Clone engines. Thank you for posting those videos. Initially, you were using direct drive propellers. Were there any issues with the engine bearings coping with the axial thrust loading of the propeller?
    I'm interested in doing something similar with one of these engines for a large RC aircraft. I'm wondering if I'll need to add a thrust bearing to protect the engine, or if the internal bearings are adequate. You eventually added a re-drive and larger props. Was that just to get more static thrust for aircraft performance, or did the original direct drive setup have problems and the re-drive was a solution that also improved performance? Were there any other wear and tear issues you found that I should be cautious of?

    • @19pete38
      @19pete38  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Ron..l contemplated putting external thrust bearings on the clones but opted to try it without to see if they would hold together ..probably 25 hrs total of which 10 hrs were in the air.. there didn't appear to be any increase in end play, but it isn't difficult to install thrust bearings on the crank although l wouldn't bother for rc models.. the best rpm l could get was 4800 rpm direct driving 12x34'' gsc props.. the clones were modified with advance timing keys, 18lb valve springs, alum fly wheels..this gave a thrust of about 50 lbs per engine and prob 10 hp each.. l wish l had installed a modified cam with this setup to increase the rpm to 5200 or so, to give you 13 or 14 hp....that would give pretty good performance with the Lazair at 420 lbs all up.. l shelved the clone project for lack of time but when a rotax engine went bad l purchased the Hondas with the redrives to get in the air again.. they had about 25 hrs flying time.. the engines were highly modified to put out 15 hp each and with the 24x44' props with the 2:1.0625 would produce 70 lb thrust /engine at 5250 rpm.. l sold the plane last year but hope to try the clone route again in the future.. hope this helps and good luck.. Pete

    Would like to hear the science (aerodynamics) behind the inverted tail design.
    Can this plane land (glyde) safely if one or both of the engines stop running during flight?
