    With so many storms and consistent heavy rains the Victory Garden needs to re-invent itself. However, the dream is still alive as I found new solutions to keep the Victory Garden going!

    Saturday morning at 0500, last night, we spread blood and bone and lots of seedlings. We were hot and tired, so we went for a shower, food, and bed, intending to mulch early.. Problem unknown loose dogs appeared during the night an destroyed 70 seedlings and spread dirt everywhere so it's not just weather mate. today is going to be 42 c plus character building to the max send over some of that rain

    You're a good man Marty. Maybe you need to teach your neighbours how to grow things 🥰😍🤩
    No justice is there? One half of the country is so parched whilst another is waterlogged. Those clever engineers of the future may come up with some wonderful solutions - sadly long after I'm gone 😮‍💨😪
    A throwaway comment by my son years ago when my daughter moved into a house with a small shady garden. Strategically placed mirrors to reflect the light. I'm not clever enough to expand on the idea and my son lives far, far away now, so I can' get him to demonstrate his ideas - if he even remembers 🤩
    You have so many clever viewers, maybe someone can run with the idea. Or not. 😘Xx

    Bad news for my back yard too, while I was away my nephew went crazy with weed n feed when mowing the lawns. Right where I was going to start growing. Hopefully the the 6 month of monsoonal rain we’ve had in the last two weeks will flush the poison away.😢

    Welcome to Mother Nature, a strict mistress. There are a lot of wins there, such as the benefit of foam boxes, which are perfect for small spaces and easy to move. Happily, you had space to move after getting rid of that sweet potato lodger. Lessons learned: I don't see failures unless you keep repeating. The site's role is now back on track, all about gardens and experience and anticipation re gardens rather than drones and tin foil hat subjects .

    It's a very dry Summer here so far. We've lost some plants to the heat 41C last week and we are at 34 today. Lucky I always grow too many.😊

    I bale plant every year. Try turning your bales on their sides with the cord running parallel to the ground. They maintain their shape integrity much better, and water drains through more efficiently.

    You are SO creative and resourceful! What a fantastic idea to place grow bags with vegetables next to or on top of other garden areas that can be watered by the run off from the grow bags! Not only is it water but it is sort of enriched since it went through the soil in the grow bag.. I'm going to steal that idea and use it next summer in a quasi-huglekulture I'm starting with just old brush and cuttings and plant based food wastes I'm bringing out there and covering with soil I've dug up.
    Your mentioning your water logged straw bales being good for worms, makes me think I should start mixing some food wastes into the collapsed bales I have which have fallen apart (through all our varied weather including flooding in spring, droughts in the summer and floods in the fall). I had high hopes for growing in the bales last summer but when hornets built a giant next at the bottom of a bale and stung me multiple times, I was afraid to go near them. I think they may have left for a while, now that it is colder.. So it might be safe to venture over there with my fruit and veggie and paper towel wastes.

    • @martysgarden
      @martysgarden  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Use it for sure Emily, just put a bit of compost on top or through the bales. They will consume the bale and compost as feed.

    • @thatswhatisaid8908

    "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain." Well, we know that's not true. By the sound of it the rain falls mainly on Marty's garden. Sorry to hear about it, Mart. Still, nothing happens which isn't meant to happen, mate. There are no accidents in the Universe. Got to be a lesson in there from the deluge.

      @@martysgarden thanks Marty, in various rentals and not always managing so well with my complex medical condition I've found where I can I leave some things go to flower then seed. (If space / timing etc allows ). Things like parsley then self seed and just keep coming up. Kale and similar go to seeds and the aphids hit them hard then the prepaying mantis egg sacks and lady bird larvae seem to keep their numbers down.... so when the cucumber leaves and zucchini leaves get hit by aphids and bugs the praying mantis numbers (and various spiders) are already there.
      In one garden very close to the M5East tunnel here in Sydney I'd leave the lid off the compost and toss in everything I could find. The entire family of blue wrens would visit there to eat insects then check under every garden plant leaf for grub snacks. My parents are in Ballina so I know the scrub turkey up your way has a rather different method in the garden. Tossing the mulch ..... thanks for that tip to reduce the ones that eat the plants and leave the ones that eat the plant eating aphids etc. Coffee grounds from local coffee shops seem to reduce snails and slugs. Though I add in a lot of cardboard and paper mulch to the worm farm and compost even they seem to find somewhere to exist in the mix of composting..... though unwelcome when they eat seedlings and soft plants. Only so many times you can spray chilli on every leaf when the Australian summer goes into semi monsoon kinda season I know.
      Been using old Styrofoam boxes for many years. I'm not convinced they are great for the environment but as a survival garden we can sit them on composting and deeper rooting plants will go deep. Could also use the boxes to be edging around the straw bales if someone had loose straw (from horse stables etc) Let it mature 3 months for anti parasite treatments to break down then plant into it. Did that once. Cover in woodchips to reduce flies visiting.
