This was an awesome interview. I had some MND cards when I was younger, in 6th-8th grade, and I actually never knew how to play. I don't even remember where/how I got my cards haha. I just started collecting some MND again for a focused collection I have in mind, something I would like to share with and pass on to my son one day (whether he keeps it or sells it.......).
    Thanks for the content.

I remember applying for and receiving an open beta pack for The Spoils, and the art on the cards were line art, and it was super cool.

Listening to this initially via audio only podcast, Josh's voice has an uncanny resemblance to that of Justin Gary's. Ha, kinda trippy. Thanks for the awesome content!

Not too many better 1st jobs than working for Square. Had no idea Magi-Nation was a gameboy game too. Can't wait to get my 1st game of Spoils in....may just do that box opening soon.

Nice. Spoils is a wonder to look at & has art direction like no other game. Also, I would have loved to be a Square tester in the mid-1990s.

This ccg was, and still is my all time favorite. If I had to ditch Magic or Pokemon or w/e in order to get into the much smaller Magi tourney, I did. I converted many people in my time playing this, and I still introduce people when possible, even though the game is long dead. I truly love this game and am so damn sad that nobody seems to have any interest in reviving it officially. I would totally be on board with a revival, be it tangible of digital - though digital is probably the way to go nowadays. Something like Pokemon Stadium but with Magi as well maybe?
Cald FTW. I will always love you Raega! Still looking for a Gorgle's Glasses to this day....

I loved Magi-Nation as a teenager, even running events at the local store. I still treasure my collection and bust out a game every few years.
It was great to hear some background lore behind the game. Also, I think the regional-tax alternative Josh mentioned could be really interesting: Pick your three magi, and you can play all the cards of those three magi's regions.
I'd want some mechanism to reward playing with two or three from the same region though…maybe if your revealed magi matches your previous, it gets +1 energize.

Fun to hear that he is the same age as me and basically lived everyone in our age bracket's dream growing up--and then he got to design CCG's! That's so cool and I'm glad to hear all of that. Magi-Nation was such a great game and I'm glad to hear it came together the way it did, because it always seemed like such a fun "anti-Magic" game and pretty much was.

MND was such a unique design! having heard Josh's origin now, i understand better how they got to such a new TCG design space with it (still cant believe he was only 19!). ..thanks for watch btw myke

How do we get magi nation up and running for the be current generation? It certainly has more than enough lore an open world kind of maturer rpg for the game would be absolutely insane ?

It's a damn shame I didn't grow up with the CCG but instead the cartoon that had little to do with it.
I mean, it's fine as it's own thing but it's very mid compared to the CCG and the GBC game.

Oh i for sure can recommend checking out either of those games.. I must have sunk hours into both! :D

@@TBPN yeah I played a bit of both and I like em but I have more nostalgia for the wack toon that came after (which had Martha MacIsaac of Superbad fame as the female lead)...but the Game Boy game is still fantastic...it needs a remake and/or a spiritual successor.
