- The Grand Archive TCG is one of hottest Kickstarter TCGs of all time, and it's no surprise why: The development team at Weebs of the Shore have created an elegant marriage of tight, western-style game design similar to games like Magic: the Gathering and Flesh and Blood, and stunning and lovable Anime-inspired artwork and characters like those from the most popular Gacha games.
In this video, the first in our "The Ultimate HOW TO PLAY" series, we aim to show you everything you need to know to start playing the game in under 30 minutes.
If you have any questions, please ask in the comments - we will pin an FAQ to the top to cover anything we missed or that needed more detail!
Grand Archive's first set, Dawn of Ashes, ships to KS backers in Q4 2022, and is planned to be in full distribution in Q1 2023.

Great video my dudes!
Thanks Rogue, your support is always appreciated!
This might be the single best “Learn to Play” video I have ever seen. It’s not a complicated game but you kept everything simple and straightforward! The visuals helped you use real examples at the end! Bravo! Thank you! I feel a lot more confident to pick this game up and dive deeper!!!
I can't tell you how much this comment means to me. Thank you so much! I'm so glad it you found it so helpful!!
I normally don't comment, but I just wanted to say that this is by far the best how-to-play video I've seen for a TCG. You mentioned that the video took a long time to put together and it shows! Great work!
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me! I'm so glad it was helpful!
Great guide! Also awesome job animating the game to show what was happening.
You do an amazing job giving a rundown of the rules here. Looking forward to giving this a try!
I usually check out the CCGs releasing each year. This game might be one of the better thought out of the ones lately.
Thanks for taking time to break this down. As someone who has played several other card games, I found your video very informative.
Fantastic walkthrough. Thank you for making this! I'm excited to give the game a try.
Amazing tutorial video. I was left with several questions after reading the basic rules. They were all answered in this video.
Really clean tutotial! Many thanks!
You are very welcome! Thanks for the kind words!
I just recently bought my Lorraine starter deck and was eager to play. This video was the BEST how to start guide I could find on the internet! Keep up the good work!
Thanks, super helpful
Awsome work! Thks a lot for this video! An awsome video on "how to play"! Best video outhere by far . Thks a lot for your hard work on this one
awesome video!!! Wish the game pre-orders weren't already sold out at my normal LGS
Just got my starter decks in the mail and this was super helpful. thank you!
Awesome, so glad to have helped out! Have fun!
Really amazing job with the tutorial! The editing was fantastic. Thanks!
You are so welcome, I'm so glad you found it helpful! Thanks for the comment!
Sooooo helpful! Thank you!
Happy I could help!!
Thanks for doing this!
Glad to be able to help - hope it provides what you need!
Sheesh bro thank you so much, this video help me a lot to understand the game
So glad to hear it, thanks for the comment!
Thank you for showing me this game, I'm already in love with it.
You are very welcome, so are we!!
Very well laid out how to play. Thank you. Looking forward to trying out the game!
So glad to have helped you!! Enjoy the game!
I am excited to start playing this game looks like a lot of fun
Just picked this up, time to give it a tey😊
One of the best how to play videos I have seen for a TCG. Well done! I hope you do more!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad it was helpful! We have another for Star Wars Unlimited, and a third one will be coming this month :)
My other question aside, thanks for this video it's been very helpful in answering most of the questions I had after reviewing the quick start rules.
Excellent - so happy it could help you! Thanks for watching!
Top notch guide, sir!
You earned my sub
Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear it was so helpful for you and hope you enjoy the rest of our GA content!
This is an amazing job explaining this game. I was hesitant on playing but now I want to give it a shot!
That makes me so happy to hear! Glad I could help!
You have such wonderful and easy to follow editing. Thank you, I can't wait to play this game with my friends!!
Thank you so much, glad I could be helpful!
Excellent video! Cheers!
Happy to help, thanks for leaving the comment too!
I had no idea how much summoning sickness had been smooshed into my brain until I tried to learn the rules for this one. Thanks for the great walkthrough!
You're very welcome, glad it was helpful! It took me a while to shake off the Sickness when I started too!
It is clear that you have put a lot of effort into the tutorial. Game itself looks beautiful and is not difficult to understand. Unfortunately I live in a place where no one will play cards with me, so I only play digital cards :(
That's always the challenge. The rise of webcam play like in our Discord leagues helps some, but there's really no replacing the feel of physical! Thanks for watching and commenting!
the game has many tts mods and you find peopel t play in discort
This video brought me everything I needed to know to start playing GA right away 👀 👌
It means everything to me to hear that! Thanks for watching and letting me know! :)
I backed it so I'm now even more excited to get it in the mail! 😆 Ty!
Happy to help, I can't wait either!
Good video! Made it clear what i did wrong the first time I tried playing. Looking forward to more GA content.
Glad it helped!!
I cant thank you enough for this. As many have already stated, the info in this video is well thought out and organized to a tee. Ive had some speed bumps getting to learn Grand Archive and this is the best guide Ive encountered... easily better than the quick start guide.
I'm so glad you found it helpful!! Comments like these make my day, thanks for sharing!
Found an unopened box of starters at my FLGS. The cards looked cool so my wife and I each bought a deck. This video is how we are learning to play. It thorough while still concise. Thank you.
Great to hear, thank you! I hope you and your wife enjoy the game, it's steadily growing and becoming better and better each set!
Wow detailed and easy to understand
So happy that I could help you!
thanks heaps, really helpful video and it made me want to play = )
I'm so glad to hear that, thanks so much for the comment and hope you get a chance to play soon!
Thanks for the great video and content, I backed the project awhile ago but never dug much further due to time, life, etc. However, thanks to this video, I understand the basics and excited to get my hands on the game to play!
Happy to help!!
Thank you for making this video!
Very clear in explaining the rules and flow of a turn
You are so welcome, glad I could help!
@@MaindeckGames you did, a lot! ^^
hard part is getting into the game right now XD it's been hard trying to find product near me, or the product is overseas but with high shipping
Already decided to get Silvie deck! ^^ and build a wind variant
Watched this when GA first dropped and it's still the best go-to refresher for getting back into the game. Thank you so much for making it!
I'm so happy to hear that, thank you so much! So happy to be able to help that way!
I really appreciate this video
Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment!
6:44 Duel Masters, Spoils, Alpha Clash : "Are we all jokes to you?"
No, none of those games have the same resource system :) In those games, cards are placed one per turn as resources which remain in your resources until the end of game (or an effect removes them). You can then exhaust those resources to pay for card costs. However, in GA, each turn you place cards into memory to pay costs, and the following turn those cards will return to your hand. You can also banish cards in memory to materialize cards before you return them to hand. Thus, cards placed in memory early may end up being played later on, and your hand size dictates your resources, not a growing resource pile. Very different concept to work with!
@@MaindeckGames
So it's more like Flesh and Blood's pitching mechanic except the cards go back into the hand instead of the deck. That's interesting.
It's a shame so much of the art looks like it was drawn by aspiring hentai artists.
Yes, FAB is about the closest comparison, but doesn't have the same buildup/builddown options over turns that GA has. The art may not be for everyone!
clear and concise explanation of the game, gameplay and actions-per-turn. thanks! now wondering if there's a community of players near me. :)
Thank you, glad it could help! As the game hasn't even launched yet, best bet is to just let your favorite local store know you are interested! Preordering through them can help them get it on the shelf to grow a community!
Great video!
Thank you!! Hope everyone checks out Silvie.org linked in the description as well :)
So in theory, you can mix and match different champions and spirits in your Material deck (maybe kind of like a pre-sideboard depending on matchup), but it's generally not advantageous to do so since having the same class/lineage grants additional bonuses.
Your Material deck could contain ANY champion levels, yep - however, most levels have Lineage requirements so you can't go from, for example, Rai level 1 to Lorraine level 2. The exception are the "lineage break" level 2s like Tristan and Merlin which have no Lineage requirement! Even still, we've seen some interesting ideas where players have built around multiple champions and would go down one path or another based on their matchup!
Very well done video!
Thank you so much! So glad to have helped!
I had heard some good things about this game, but didn't know anything about it. What a perfect way to get up to speed. Thanks for the detailed how to play with great visuals and thoughtful presentation. Appreciate the work here!
Wow, thank you! Coming from you that means a ton. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave the comment!
@@MaindeckGamesA pleasure - I'm subscribed so I can keep up with all these CCGs coming out - thanks for covering so many titles!
Just bought some packs! Store was out of starters so I got 10 packs! This game looks very fun!
Hope you enjoy it! The game is amazing!

*FAQ and Noted Errors*
RULES UPDATE:
As of 6/19/2023, Champions no longer awaken on level up. They will remain the position they were in at the previous level. This won't usually matter when leveling during the Materialize step, but would previously come up when leveling with a card activation like Beseech the Winds or Dungeon Guide.
RULES ERROR:
At 17:40, during the description of Opportunity, it's stated that "the opponent" receives opportunity in items 3., 4., and 5. (before Recollection, before Retaliation, before Damage). In reality, BOTH PLAYERS receive opportunity at those times, beginning with the Turn Player.
FAQ:
*1. Are there any deck building restrictions such as only using Warrior allies with Warrior champions?*
No, there are not! You can freely play Mage allies while you have a Warrior champion, etc. Just watch out for cards with the [Class Bonus] ability, which will only gain that effect while your CURRENT champion level matches the card's class (or one of its classes).
I've watched a lot of "how to play" videos in my day: for MANY board games and numerous other TCGs. Very clear and well-explained.
This game takes ideas from a lot of other games. "hand as resource" from Final Fantasy TCG, tap to deal damage back from Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn, the idea of champions and weapons from Flesh and Blood and Hearthstone. And of course the creature combat of MTG. Even a little bit of the 'enabling' from Might and Magic: Duel of Champions.
I bought some starter decks, and am looking forward to seeing how all these ideas play out.
Thanks so much, that comment makes my day :) Hope you enjoy the game!
Nice vid my dude
Thanks so much, glad it helped you out!
Bought the starter decks after this. They should be giving you a cut lol. Best tutorial I've seen and the demo at the end really solidified my understanding.
Thank you so much - that's an extremely kind comment! I hope you enjoy the game!!
Gonna be playing this game this weekend at a demo event. I cant wait!
Excellent, I hope you really enjoy it!! Let us know how it goes!
@@MaindeckGames The event was pretty fun! I won the Rae Sleeve set. I used the Loraine demo deck and got to keep it
This video is excellent! Great work. I now know. How to play this game!
Unlike the official GA channel. Which most people that are interested in this game will watch.
They should of had the foresight to make a video like this. It’s. A glaring weakness that TCG companies always seem to miss.
Once again. This video is perfect. I appreciate your hard work put into making this how to play video.
Thank you so much for the kind words! The GA team helped me a lot in creating this by double checking my script, rules info, and providing assets, so I do know they were very interested in having something like this done as well. :) I'm very glad it helped you out!
well done. Great vid
Thanks so much! Hope it helped you out!
Love the video! Really helped me get into the game. Quick question, if a player has multiple weapons out on the field, can they use both in a single attack or do you only get one at a time?
You can't use more than one Weapon per attack. Maybe we'll see someone who can "dual wield" at some point!
This TCG looks amazing!!
We are all super excited for it!
AAAAMMMMAAAZZZIINNG VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT TO SEE MORE YOU, you have a good voice for this
Thank you so much!! That made my day. There will be more! :)

Obrigado pelo seu gentil comentário! Estou feliz por poder ajudar!
It's criminal to have this video with only 8.5 k views.
Hopefully you gain more traction after the game has launched.
Thank you so much for the kind words! We've been gaining a lot of traction and have had a ton of support ❤
Love the card art and mechanically different from anything else I have played so definately interested in giving this a try. But not sure if availability will be an issue in my country....
I sure hope it works out! I know the team has contacts with distributors in Canada, Europe, and Oceania, at least!
So well done 👏 what software is used to make the virtual card play examples?
Thank you! It was all animated by hand in Adobe Premiere.
@@MaindeckGames Awesome, thanks!
This is an awesome reminder of how to play since it’s been a few months for me, thanks for the video! Although I feel the timing for reactions wasn’t done properly when I last played.. (but it was a casual league and I’m still very new so I don’t want to be nitpicky, just be sure I’m learning) like the cost is still paid for the card attempting to activate before you try a fast response if you have one. If that’s right, then I could potentially save myself from arcane wreckage with frostbind, I think..? 😅
Yes, the cost has to be fully paid to activate a card - so if your opponent's card is negated with Frostbind, they don't get the cards they placed in memory to pay for it back until their next recollection step!
Hi Maindeck, I would like to clarified the video explaining, on 21:45 stating that champion have 4 attack power. How did Lorrain who just materialised gain attack power when it only have durability stats?
Should it be only having 2 attack power plus 2 more from the weapon she has?
Thank You
Hey Dan, I got a couple of questions. For Phantasia cards, if you rest them they wake up during your next wake up phase correct? also for the "Plea for Peace" card the "1" (with yellow bubble) refers a memory cost? Does that mean opponents have to put 1 card down into their memory for each attack? Thanks for your help.
Great questions- those mechanics were added in later sets! Yes, phantasias wake up with everything else during the Wake Up Phase, and the yellow circle with a number is also a reserve cost and is paid exactly as you describe.
Concise rules video!
One thing I was wondering about, you mentioned Rai could remove counters at fast speed to draw a card.
Does using abilities rest your champion? Or would it specifically say rest as a cost?
If Rai was rested (for example, to attack), would he still be able to remove counters to draw?
Thank you! Using abilities does not rest your champion unless it specifically says as a cost (there is a symbol that shows turning the card). So you can definitely still use Enlighten counters when rested (it's technically an ability of the counters anyway, not an ability of the champion!)
Hi there, quick question. When you lvl up to the 3rd level for rai does the counters from the lvl 2 carry over?
All counters (damage, enlighten, preparation, etc) stay on when you change levels!
Great video. Very informative for all of the new players that want to learn how to play. Why pennies and not a die for counters? Who has loose change around for that?
It's the only use left for pennies these days!
@@MaindeckGames dang. You are so right
The Hero-Card and Memory-Zone kinda remind me of how FE: Cipher is played
They prob. got some inspiration from that in terms of gameplay
Thanks for this, easy to understand and helped great when playing with my wife
So glad to hear that, thanks for watching!!
What online client are you using to play?
So at the end your champion attacking is still considered in the main phase before you play tactful sergeant?
Yes! Starting a Combat Phase interrupts the Main Phase, but doesn't end it. You can activate any allies/slow speed cards before, between, and after attacks. This is different than games like Magic, and similar to games like Dragon Ball Super!
I have a question. Champions like Merlin, Memory thief onle have level 2 card. I can replace any other champion? I cam replace level 1 lorraine with Merlin?
Yes, those champions do not have a *lineage* requirement listed in their text box, so ANY level 1 can level into them, regardless of class. However, no level 3s currently can can level *from* those "lineage break" level 2s, so you are stuck there once you reach it!
This game is cool hope it gets popular
I am looking at the Demo game around @21:45 after activating invigorated Slash you turn the Hero card horizontally to indicate the Hero is attacking, but turning the weapon itself would make more sense since that is the actual attack power alongside Slash (also because placing a hero in resting state, makes no sense to me since it has no attack to defend with?!).. Also Slash did not get turned horizontally upon the attack, is that simply not necessary for attack cards that don`t survive into the next turn? Would love to see more easy games like this explained.. Cheers..
Resting the Champion is a cost to attacking, whether you are using an attack card, a weapon, or both. This is important because you can not normally attack with the same unit twice in a turn, including a Champion, unless you use an effect to awaken it.
Attack cards and weapons do not rest when used for an attack - and Attack cards get discarded as soon as the Attack sequence has completed, just like Action cards.
Hope that makes a little more sense, let me know if you have any more questions!
Ordered a booster box and starter deck today
Sick! Good luck on your pulls!
This is very good, how about Cardfight Vanguard or Sorcery next.
Thanks so much! We have our next one lined up, and the one after that might be lined up as well. Neither of those are on the table quite yet but I appreciate the suggestions!
Please show a video how to play to people have slow learning disability such as myself ^_^ Im interested in playing this game, But I want to make sure if im making a right choice on buying this game
Main deck hope you check out sorcery tcg.the art of the card is hand paint and the card just like magic the gathering and flesh and blood tcg
Sorcery does look cool, we are keeping our eyes on it! Thanks for the comment!
@@MaindeckGames you can check out the second kickstarter partner with Rudy alpha investment .he will announcement it soon but I don’t know when he will announcement that tcg.
This probaly sounds dumb but with Rai theres alot of instant level up cards in his material deck. If im already level 2 for example could i banish crystal of empowerment to get to level 4? I know there is no card for level 4 but i feel like that would benifit his play abit more especially with lv efficiency cards.
This is a common mistake - the cards which increase your LV are really just increasing your "level value", not allowing you to advance to a new level card. In other words, Crystal of Empowerment used while on level 2 Rai would make you "considered" level 4 for any card effects, but it *would not* allow you to put out your Level 3 Rai card. The only way to advance to a new level CARD is through materializing to it from the previous level either in your Materialize step or through an effect like Dungeon Guide or Beseech the Winds.
Apologies if this has been explained before, but I'm assuming you can only materialise one card per materialise phase?
Correct, only (up to) one per turn unless another effect allows you to do extra (such as Beseech the Winds)!
Game seems like a good mix of FaB and DBS. Should be fun.
Yeah, it's got a nice blend of several familiar games, with its own twist. It's definitely a blast to play!
If I give more levels and enlightenment counters to my cha.pion, do they stay after I level the champion up? Or do they all fall off?
Counters remain as you level!
Not sure if you're still checking comments on this video but figure it's worth a shot since I came here to re-learn the rules.
So I just got my cards in and the Spirit of [Element] cards don't have that inherited ability printed on them that your champion inherits and activates that element when leveled up. Do you happen to know if that's a misprint or if there was some rules change there?
Yeah, that ended up being removed and simply packed into the rules for your Lineage - you enable any elements that are in your Lineage (the champion levels you have used). So no need for the extra text there!
@@MaindeckGames okay cool that's how I've been playing it. Thanks!
The one thing i was hoping to learn was not in the video... I just got into GA and I have one question im having a issue finding the answer to and that is when you level a hero using a card effect (Melodious flute) i know you get the effect of the next level of the champion but what about health pool. Nothing in the rules mentions the health pool in this manner.
Damage taken stays on champions - but as you level, your health pool may increase per the number in the lower right. So if Lorraine has taken 5 damage so far this game, when she levels from 1 to 2, she'll still have 5 damage on her, but the total damage required for her to lose the game will increase from 20 to 24 while she is on that level.
where are you playing the demo game at btw? what website is that?
That's not being played, it was animated for the video, sorry!
I’ve got a question about intercepting. If I intercept with my ally, then return it to hand with Reclaim how is damage calculated? Will damage go to my face or will nothing happen
Intercept changes the target of the attack from your Champion to the unit with Intercept. If that ally then leaves play before the damage resolves in the combat step, then simply no damage is dealt to the ally - the attack does not redirect back to any other target.
I got a demo deck today. Can ypu get your material cards back mid game?
Material Deck cards - like Regalia - that would leave play are always banished. So if you had a way to move them from the Banishment to somewhere else, sure - such as using some Crux effects. But there is no natural way to get them back without using a card effect.
is there deckbuilding restrictions? like can Warrior allies only be with a warrior champion?
Hi K! There are no restrictions like that for deck building. You can play Mage ally cards with Warrior champion cards, etc! Some advanced decks may even play multiple champion types in their material deck and decide which to level into as the game plays out.
The [Class Bonus] effects will only be able to be used if your current Champion level matches one of the card's classes. That's the main restriction that will define how your deck plays differently - but you can still play those cards without getting the Class Bonus, such as playing Fireball in an Assassin deck for extra burn damage despite not getting the bonus cost reduction.
@@MaindeckGames gotcha ok. Makes deckbuilding have a lot of depth and things to try out.
Hello I recently got into the game and i have fallen in love with it but i had a question about something i found VERY confusing. In the comprehensive rules on page 12 for ITEMS it says "Items may only be activated at slow speed" but on page 34 under "Abilities" it says "Activated abilities use fast speed by default." The confusion arose when i wanted to use the activated effect of "Beastbond Boots" during my opponents turn. Does "activation" as it is written on page 12 refer to the activation of the card from the hand or material deck and not its ability activation? Can I use "Beastbond Boots" or any other activated item on my opponent's turn?
I got you - no worries! This is a common point of confusion! "Activating a card" is the term for *playing* Main Deck cards in GA. Abilities are also Activated - but that would be "using the ability" rather than "playing the card". So the page 12 part is saying "Activating an Item Card (this would a theoretical non-Regalia Item, which would be in the Main Deck - these don't exist yet, but this is a "future proofing" rule) is done at slow speed", while the Page 34 is saying, as you surmised, "You can use the activated ability of your item at fast speed".
In short, YES, you can use Beastbond Boots's Activated Ability during your opponents turn!
@@MaindeckGames Awesome thanks!
I might have missed it but what are the card limits in the main deck?
4x Per Card in the Maindeck (tm)!
So could I still For the lack of better word ‘Peak’ at what Face Down Cards I have in my Memory Zone? And how many copy’s of one card I could have in both decks respectively?
Yep, you can always "peek" at the cards you have in Memory. Cards in your Material deck will only be in your Material deck - they are are the cards with a blue circle cost in the upper left. The ones with a Yellow circle cost go in the Main deck. You can have only a single copy of any Material Deck card, but cards that go in the Maindeck can be in sets of up to 4x each.
@@MaindeckGamesOh okay Thank You, that word ‘Random’ sort of tripped me up a little. Again Thank You 👍🏽
It feels like going first is objectively worse than going second.
You skip draw and don't actually have anything to attack.
Second place gets to draw and can attack right away, so if first for whatever reason does not have an ally to play just takes a hit.
That's an awesome observation. What we've found in a lot of competitive testing is that going first or second is very dependent on the deck/match up. The player going first is able to push to higher levels faster, which can be a massive advantage for some decks. Others definitely prefer second for the reasons you listed!
Some of that art is a bit concerning and I'm also not sure I'm on board with the added randomness of having a card taken from the memory zone on a die role. Nice to have a video explain clearly how to play at any rate.
Glad I could help!
3:01 so this makes me wonder, what happened to earth, and what would be considered abnormal? I'm guessing the specific named elements are abnormal.
Heh. So the cards fall alseep when they used, and wake up at the start of a turn. This sounds funny.
Removing cards from hand as a cost is a thing some games have. Banishing cards as a cost is thing that can happen in some of the games. I guess combining the two makes it different in a way, but the methods aren't new. Just so I don't sound like I'm am making stuff up I'll name 2. Final Fantasy TCG, & Take The Galaxy. Even in MtG you can have cards that blow up to provide mana. I actually thought there was something really new to the system when you mentioned different from other games. Always keen to see different systems in action.
Interesting they chose to give everyone (effectively) Haste, or Rush. Being able to attack the same turn played is pretty strong. Am I wrong to think being second is a blessing because of this? Not only are you allowed to draw cards, but you can also attack first. It seems like going first allows for possible levelling up sooner, but how much of an edge is that over getting cards and attacking in one go?
So this game has multiple attack phases unlike Mtg right? In Mtg you must declare your attack all at once during your turn.
That's right, unlike MTG, in Grand Archive you declare attacks during your Main Phase, one at a time, and can do other Main Phase actions before, after, or between them.
Can you level up your champion whenever you want?
The only time you can materialize a new Champion level is using your one Materialize per turn, during your Materialize step!
How many cards you need to have in your hand to start the game?
You start the game with no cards in hand, whatever level 0 champion you play tells you how many cards to draw!
Might have missed it but is there mulligan in this game?
Does Grand Archive TCG have a MULLIGAN like other card games?
