The Epley maneuver is a treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a common inner ear disorder that causes episodes of dizziness or vertigo with changes in head position. The Epley maneuver is a series of head movements that can reposition the otoconia (small crystals in the inner ear) from the semicircular canals back into the utricle, where they can be reabsorbed by the body.
To perform the Epley maneuver, a healthcare provider will have the patient sit on a bed or table with their legs extended and their head turned 45 degrees to the affected side. The patient will then lie back quickly with their head hanging off the edge of the bed, maintaining the head position for about 30 seconds. The healthcare provider will then turn the patient’s head to the opposite side, holding the head in this position for another 30 seconds. Finally, the patient will be rolled onto their side with their head facing down, maintaining this position for another 30 seconds.
The Epley maneuver should only be performed by a trained healthcare provider, as it can potentially cause dizziness or nausea during the procedure. It is important to follow up with a healthcare provider after the maneuver to ensure that it was successful in treating the BPPV.
