Alright got this done in a little under 30 minutes. Couple things I would recommend before doing this is magnetic security star bits / tools and proper light! Also a correction when removing the ram metal cover plate, the screws are actually t5 instead of t6, other than that this video is pretty straight forward.
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down? Someone who wants everyone to throw money at Apple for nothing? Thank you for making the video. I might buy a Mac Mini knowing it's actually possible to upgrade the RAM without paying double or triple the prices I can buy my own for.
Derek Jonez apparently there’s a group of people (I think they said it was students) who have said they will thumbs down every video on TH-cam, I’m not saying this was them , but it could have been (according to other comment asking this question)
Thanks for the detailed guide. Was able to do a 8 to 16GB RAM upgrade. One note, that small screw holding the WiFi/Bluetooth antenna cable in place flipped off under the speaker and lodged there. I had to remove the two speaker screws to get it out. I re-magnetized my Torx screwdriver to get a better hold on it when putting it back. The connector on that cable is also a challenge to re-attach. It's easy to damage it so it's something to take care when repositioning and attaching so it is not misaligned when pressing it in place. Also, one of the 8GB memory modules didn't show up the first time I tried. I pulled the Mini back apart and reseated it. It's worth double-checking to be sure both modules are still fully seated after putting those rubber pieces back on. Finally, my RAM shield screws were Torx T5, not T6 as others have suggested. I also made the mistake of confusing TR6 with T6 and had to order one off of Amazon, though I had all of the other screwdrivers. In any case, the guide was a big help. The performance difference from 8GB to 16GB is incredible. Even though the upgrade process is not as easy as it was in 2012, it is still worth doing. It's not too bad, especially with a clear guide. It took me about 45 minutes on the first try, then only about 15 minutes on the second try! Thanks again! Really appreciate the effort.
Just finished installing 32GB of RAM in my new Mini. Got the memory from Other World Computing who are always very supportive. They even included the required screwdrivers in the kit. The procedure was not overly difficult but the parts are small of course, so take your time and be patient. I’m a big bonehead with fat fingers. If I can do this so can you. Don’t worry. Be happy!

I just bought a new Mac Mini and plan to replace the 8GB with 32GB this weekend. I've watched several "how to" videos, and this is one is very clear and concise compared to others. Thanks AI. While it is definitely more of a pain to upgrade RAM than previous systems, it's not THAT difficult, and it is definitely a better option than no user-upgradeable RAM at all. IMO it is very much worth the 20-30 minutes to save $300-400.
I was going to say, RAM is cheap these days, 30-60 minutes and you saves almost 300 dollars is worth it to me. RAM in this baby is important with the integrated graphics. 16GB at minimum. I noticed it curbs the stuttering windows with more RAM.
Don't underestimate the difficulty of this. A head torch is a good idea. The Bluetooth/WiFi antenna connector is a nightmare to reattach. My RAM shield screws were Torx T5, not T6 like the others as suggested in the video. Worth noting if you're going to buy the screwdrivers for this job. I also made the mistake of confusing TR6 with T6. They're different. You will need the TR6. It has a small hole in the centre. That's the differentiation. Good luck and it's worth the effort to save a fortune.
I just finished upgrading the memory in my 2018 Mac Mini. Used a T10 instead of a T9 for the main board. Those screws were pretty tight, I had to use my thick screwdriver handle to get those loose. Used a T5 instead of a T6 for the memory cover. A used the Mini for a couple of days before I did the upgrade and noticed that it was getting unusually hot. When it flipped up the fan during the upgrade it was not connected!
Wow I remember back in the days when Apple prided itself on how easy they made it to open up their desktop computers to access the expansion and ram slots. This is quite the contrast. Great instructions, though!
The Mac mini 2014 is completely non-user upgradable. Nothing can be added or taken out. Which sucks because it has like 4 GB total of ram and I can’t add more to make it run at a moderate speed.
Thank you so much for this video! This is the first time I have taken apart a computer in over 20 years and you made it easy. Wonderful step by step instructions. Very well done!
I took mine into an Apple store to ask them to do this for me, they said they would not as it used non Apple parts. I tried a Mac repair shop and they said they would charge £75 (about £100). I'm going to try to do this myself. Thanks for the video.
I have just done it. The procedure is quite easy, but also *very* easy to break or bend pins or the thinnest cable. The connectors were very tight, and required more force to get loose, than it seams in the video.
Thank you for posting this video so soon after release, I am sure a lot of people are curious about this and want to know how it is done before they buy.
If you only want 16 gb of RAM then you should just upgrade at the time of purchase because it is only $200 extra and you will have to pay $150-200 to get 16 gb of after market RAM and then you will have to also risk installing it yourself. You may save money if you want 32+ gb of RAM by going after market, but it doesn't seem like it's worth it to upgrade to 16 gb after the fact.
I installed a 32Gb ram kit on my 2018 Mac Mini with i7 chip, very happy. BUT: a watch-out if buying from the Crucial Memory website. They list two sets of upgrade kits for the 2018 Mac Mini: chips offering 2666 SODIMM (speed) or 3200 SODIMM. The 3200 product has a big red ** NEW ** label on it, and so I bought it thinking faster is better at a 25% price premium. But no. After installation the Mac tells me the speed is 2667. I called Crucial 'sales support' who said this product is technically "compatible" but not all motherboards support this higher speed. They said they can't check all motherboard specs. So they apparently checked it far enough to know it works, but not to know that it doesn't work at the higher speed. So don't buy the 25% more expensive product, unless you are certain you have a different motherboard from mine, and beware of taking listings for your computer model at face value on the Crucial Memory website.
Thanks for the video. Now we know how painful it is just to upgrade the ram. Perhaps next video can be on video editing performance w the mini & the performance by adding eGPU.
To be fair, it is done this way for the sake of cooling. And considering they could have just soldered it on... Actually, aside from having to deal with really frail-looking fan connector, this is very reminiscent to how you would service many of the classic era Macintosh computers. Like I remember specifically that my 5215 required me to pull out the entire motherboard.

Hi Derek, I am not to knowledgeable with externally increasing storage. How does one do that? Do you mean just plugging in an SSD through a USB and working off of it?
Ethan H yeah you buy the largest you can afford on the mini, then you buy a SSD/HDD, - say a Samsung 860 evo 500GB for example you also buy an USB/thunderbolt hard drive enclosure (should be cheep £6-20 ish) put the SSD inside and off you go .
So happy Apple do allow us to change it ourself! At least, you can save big time on that and upgrade whenever you want. I would spend the money towards 10Gbit ethernet and the better processor for sure! And i would go with at least 512GB of SSD. I think that or 1TB is a good choice, i would never go with 256GB again. Made that mistake once (Macbook Pro retina). But i won't make the same mistake ever! :-)
They went out of their way to integrate a crap ton of upgrades AND optimize the cooling. Yeah, you have to remove a few screws, unplug a couple things, slide out some stuff, but none of that is even remotely difficult. And on top of that, how often will you be upgrading your RAM? I’ll answer that....ONCE! My first gaming rig that I built was intimidating but I was determined to learn how to do it. It was 100 times more complicated than this and although it took me a very long time to build it, I did it. After doing that, this looks like an 8yr old could do it watching a TH-cam video.
How´s the thermal compund ? Was thinking to liquid metal this thing when my RAM arrives. Also if I understand it correctly the fresh air comes from the bottom, does it will stay "cooler" with the black plastic bottom removed so more fresh air can g inside ?
The air intake is on the rear. Apple has an entirely new cooling system on this mini vs the previous. It could possibly bring more air in with the bottom removed, but you couldn't have it sitting on something solid and flat or it would block the bottom and negate the purpose.
What brand does apple use for the ram and where can I get it? I'd like to put in 64gb in my mini, I want the exact same specs as apple's ram. I don't want third party ram that claims to do this and that better than the one apple's got. I just want 64gb with the exact same ram apple uses.
Looking at the links provided. It cost $200 from Apple for 16gb and $165 from the link. Not much a difference and honestly don’t mind paying $35 for a hassle free installation

Ethan H or just buy an external HDD/SSD and saves yourself the hassle.
Is it possible to change RAM from only one slot? for example (4GB + 32GB)?
So happy Apple do allow us to change it ourself! At least, you can save big time on that and upgrade whenever you want. I would spend the money towards 10Gbit ethernet and the better processor for sure! And i would go with at least 512GB of SSD. I think that or 1TB is a good choice, i would never go with 256GB again. Made that mistake once (Macbook Pro retina). But i won't make the same mistake ever! :-)
Thanks for the video! I need 64Gb RAM. Does anyone know where to buy 2x32Gb SODIMM modules?
This is a great guide, thanks
how about the harddrive?
That was easy ...
That heat sync is way bigger than I expected! Nice!
Wow. Great how to video but good god what a clusterfuck!
is it possible to put different kind of ram say 1 slot 8gb, 2 slot 16? or it has to be of the same type?
The upgrade procedure is horrendous...
Omega Alpha not really, though..
It's not THE ideal scenario but it's not terrible either.
Don't give in to fear.
This is promising. Too bad they went out of the way to bury the RAM
After doing that, this looks like an 8yr old could do it watching a TH-cam video.
you're an idiot where the fuck would you fit all that shit in that chassis? right in the middle? where the cpu and cooler is? idiot
Good video
such an improvement over 2012 design, wtf?
Where are you using the P5 pentalobe??? Everything in this video appeared to be TR6 or T9
I've seen four videos now and I've yet to see anyone use a Pentalobe.
@@roryonabike5863 me too. I have no idea why they listed that at the beginning
Great Tutorial!
I want to upgrade my Mac mini with 32 GB of Ram with this specifications, it will be compatible? DDR4, 2666 MT/s, PC4-21300, DR x8, SODIMM, 260-Pin
If I use 2400Mhz RAM will it work?
@Apple Insider How to upgrade Storage and CPU
Storage is soldered down. CPU is as well.
What brand does apple use for the ram and where can I get it? I'd like to put in 64gb in my mini, I want the exact same specs as apple's ram. I don't want third party ram that claims to do this and that better than the one apple's got. I just want 64gb with the exact same ram apple uses.
Watching the other MM Ram upgrades, you could see SK Hynix printed on the ram:
www.hynix.com/products.do?lang=eng&ct1=36&ct2=37&rc=com
Is it possible for an expert to change out your ssd? Assume this would void warranty of course.
The SSD is soldered!
hi can you upgrade the memory to 3200 GHz?
But how much money did you save?
i like ur username
Moo Moo anything above 16GB you’ll save 50-60% of what Apple charges for 32GB/64GB
Looking at the links provided. It cost $200 from Apple for 16gb and $165 from the link. Not much a difference and honestly don’t mind paying $35 for a hassle free installation
@@Leo-ph5dk Hi in our country (Czech Republic, middle Europe) we have 8GB of RAM by Mini default. Extend Mini to 16GB of RAM Apple price: 6400CZK = 282,66USD :-).
Price of 2x8GB on our IT market is 2718CZK = 120,04USD less than half of Apple price.
Just for fun if I will upgrade to 2x16GB (32GB of RAM) I will pay 5478CZK = 241,94USD and it is still cheaper that Apple price from 8GB to 16GB.
This is why a lot of us is doing upgrades by self because Apple is absolutely over komponent prices on the IT market (60-70% more)
Default Mac Mini: Apple price = 23990CZK = 1059,52USD
16GB Mac Mini: Apple price = 30390CZK = 1342,17USD
16GB Mac Mini: by self = 26708CZK = 1179,56USD
Againg a funny story: Mac Mini 10years ago cost me 13500CZK = 596,23USD in default configuration...
hi, can you upgrade the ssd with any M.2 SSD like the new MP 510 from corsair? or they are only specific ones that can be used?
Yep, very useful infos ! Thanks :-)
Nice vídeo! Thanks 👍
Great job - thanks!
All that work and it only shows 16gb. How did one card not go in all of the way?
4:31 Why not just buy a few SSDs and stack the Mac Mini on the top?
