Even though the movies are titled "Star Wars" this is the one that felt most like a war movie, and I think that's what makes it such a favorite for me. It's dark, it's unforgiving, it has only the sliver of a happy ending because we know what it leads into, truly an amazing piece of art.

This was the most realistic and heroic of all the star wars films. It shows how much people sacrificed to beat the empire. This was lacking in the last three sequels and if all the characters died it would have made no difference.

@@Ladco77 The EU made the "bothans" a race of spies and politicians. That always struck me as a disservice, a classic "all members of a race are just like the first example of said race that we see" trope that's used all too much in sci fi and fantasy. It's utterly non-sensical it is if you think about it for more than five seconds.
Why did "Bothans" have to be a species? Why not the people of a planet? If a planet named Botha got zapped like Jedda did in this film, the "Many Bothans died to bring us this information" line would make just as much sense without stereotyping an entire species as a bunch of spies.

This one was absolutely, 100%, no doubt about it my favorite of the new Disney SW movies. To answer your question at 31:53, no... Lucas didn't have this specific story in mind. Only the mention in the Episode IV opening crawl of the Rebels winning their first victory against the Empire and stealing the Death Star plans. According to Wikipedia, John Knoll, a visual effects artist on the prequels, pitched the idea (based on the Episode IV crawl) in 2003 as part of an unproduced series called "Star Wars Underworld." After Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, he pitched it again as a standalone movie. And I agree... Vader was awesome, and Tarkin is a big ol' douche. 😁

    • @Azure217
      @Azure217 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have to imagine John Knoll read The Han Solo Trilogy of books, the third book "Rebel Dawn" depicts the early rebel alliance and more specifically their raid on Taprawa where they steal the death star plans and transmit them to Princess Leia on her ship Tantive IV, but the entire rebel attack force and it's leader Bria (han solo's love interest for the trilogy) die trapped there. This trilogy of books came out in 1997/1998. When the trailers for Rogue One came out I was at first kinda angry about disney yet again destroying perfectly great stories to make their own (remem this came out after episode 7, which was fine but obviously rewrote a bunch of (better) lore that had existed already). In Rogue One you really felt for the characters and their sacrifices, so at the end of the day I was surprised and pleased at this great movie.

There are several easter eggs in this movie. The two outlaws that Luke and Ben encountered in the Cantina on Tatooine make an appearance. The Blue trimmed X-Wings were not in Episode IV because they conflicted with the blue screens so Lucas changed them to red. The retcon is that they were destroyed on Scarif.

You can also see Chopper from Rebels at the Rebel Base as well as The Ghost (also from Rebels) in the fight. Also, the different projects they cycled through were actual plans the Empire eventually built. A number of them were used in Star Wars Legends Books, which Disney stupidly ignored.
In the book A New Hope, Luke was supposed to be Blue 5, not Red 5. So that explains why they changed his callsign.

When us old guys saw the original Star Wars in 1977, there was one big question we all had... "Why would they build this unstoppable weapon, but leave a huge vulnerable exhaust port exposed for anyone to shoot into?" Famous smart person John Knoll thought about it for years and wrote this story to finally explain WHY they did it.

This movie is bittersweet for me. I really like this movie. It is one of my favorites in the Star Wars franchise, but the day I saw it in the theater was the day that Carrie Fisher passed away. My friend and I were sitting in our seats at the theater, and he wanted to check his phone one last time before the trailers started. That's when he saw the news and he told me. So, when Princess Leia shows up at the end and says "Hope" it was pretty emotional.

It is not feasible to overestimate just how much I love this movie. When it was in the theater, I went to see it once or twice a week every week during its run. On the first weekend I saw it twice in one day. Every time I rewatch it (which is often) I get emotional. Tomorrow I'm running a half marathon and I had been considering dressing up as Vader but I am nervous because I may overheat. Seeing you gushing over him pushed me over the edge and I will do it. Last year I ran a race dressed as Luke with Yoda on his back and there were so many kids who loved it. I'm hoping to make folks smile again this time around.
On an unrelated note, I absolutely love this scarf.

The story was taken from one part of the scroll text at the beginning of Ep IV by John Knoll (did effects for the Star Wars Prequels at ILM and, with his brother, created Adobe Photoshop - he's got a few talents). He pitched the idea some time before Rogue One finally went into production.
First paragraph of Ep IV intro:
"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armoured space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. "

Very nice reaction, Jen 😊, and I don't think Lucas planned this side story in advance but certainly the text at the beginning of 'A New Hope' gave the idea. When I saw it in the cinema I didn't have too much expectations because Ep VII was good, but for my personal taste there were too many CGI-ish and 'smooth' scenes in which the protagonists only have one chance, actually don't know what to do, but it works perfectly out. So (of course) I watched 'Rogue One' at 0.01 o'clock (like every time 😂) on the first day when it was released here and I was very surprised how perfectly they hit the old Star Wars style from the 70s and 80s. It was just amazing.
Of course they use mainly the old designs of space fighters and ships which helps a lot, but for me (as many others) the absolute highlight was that they used unused footage from 1977 and fitted it perfectly in the movie and when these scenes appeared on the screen there was spontaneously instant applause and cheers by the audience. 😄🥳😎
The whole movie was really a great surprise for me and it connects perfectly with the original movie. Also I really liked that the Rebels aren't only good guys and the Empire are just evil scumbags. It gives all of them more character and certainly makes it more realistic because there in reality there never is just black and white. Even the good guys have their assassins, snipers and intentionally kill innocent people, while in the Empire there are people who want to do their job and live, but don't like to do it and so on. 🧐
In my oppinion by far the best movie since Disney took over and together with Ep III, IV, V and VI in the my personal top 5 of Star Wars movies. All other movies are at least good too or better (no matter what some people say ... and I'm a Star Wars nerd too since I saw the first two movies in 1980 for the first time, 'Star Wars' (later Ep. IV - A New Hope) as a rerun a week before 'The Empire strikes back' was released), but I think this movie really is an unexpected highlight and since Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin) passed away in 1994, in my opinion they did an outstanding job with CGI on him as well as on Leia. 😊

I became a Star Wars Megafan in 1977 when I 1st saw Star Wars as a seven year old. Watched every film in the theatre even dressing up as Obi Wan (and growing a beard for the 1st time) for the premiere of Revenge of the Sith in 2005. Bought all the toys, all the stuff.
However by 2008 I had become completely fed up with all things Star Wars. I was bitter. So much so that I sold nearly all of my collection and swore I would never spend another second of my time with Star Wars...
Until in 2017 I convinced myself to watch Rogue One. It was a leap of faith... And I was *not* disappointed! This was the film that made me fall in love with Star Wars once again!
Chirrut's death brings me to tears every time.
And for the long term SW fans it finally plugged the biggest plot hole from the beginning- Why would the Empire accidentally design the ultimate battle station with such a fatal flaw that a single torpedo could destroy it?
Answer- it was no accident, it was done from within on purpose as revenge. Brilliant!
    Once again loved the reaction!

I got lucky enough to see this in a theatre on a Tinder date with a woman who turned out to be a social media star. So it was awesome being shown all of the meaning behind certain things that popped up throughout the film. She got an advanced screening and she couldn't talk about it, each moment that something happened, she was super excites to see my reactions. But seeing it in the theater was so incredible. The Darth Vader entrance opening up his light saber.

Donnie Yen is just great in everything! Between his character in this & Blade 2, I still want backstory movies on them. But, this is up there for overall favorite Star Wars movies. The way they linked it to episode 4 was just great & Vader's moment towards the end...great & truly terrifying at the same time! *The director, Gareth Edwards, is just an amazing director, writer, action choreographer, etc. I don't know if you've seen THE RAID series, parts 1 & 2, but they're amazing too. Same director of rogue one, but the 3rd raid movie never happened because it was so heavily pirated.* Anyways, Great Reactions BTW!

If you ever read some of the background to the production of this movie, it's amazing it came out as good as it did. There were a lot of rewrites, reshoots and re-edits quite late in the day. If you watch the original trailer, there are a lot of scenes that were cut or redone for the final film. I think the only thing that got a little lost in final cut was the Saw Gerrera character/storyline.

This movie made Darth Vader scary again. He was scary in 1977 for this 11 year old....but by the time "Jedi" rolled around, he just wasn't terribly menacing.
This one is my favorite by far. Episode IV is my top film (because it's the one that started it all for me) but Rogue One is the favorite all around.

I thought at the time he was still scary in Jedi. But by the time they had had 50 cartoons (not including Clone Wars) and cutesy toys they managed to make him far less menacing than what he was in the 80s which is a scary as shit space Nazi with no face and a scary breathing. Oh and he could do magic and had a laser sword!!! lol.

@@derred723 When they did the face reveal at the end of "Jedi", I was hoping we would see a torn up, gnarly lookin' face to match the back of his head from "Empire". Instead we got a gray, slug-looking guy with weird bushy eyebrows (now digitally "corrected"😁). It just didn't land for me. It doesn't help I was 17 at the time and was more interested in cars and girls.
Vader was always my guy....but he had changed from "Comander, tear this ship apart until you've found those plans...." to "It is too late for me.....son". I know he was having a transformative moment, but I just wanted mean, ruthless Darth Vader.
But we got him in THIS!! . And he WAS pretty well written in Rebels (but that's just my opinion).
I LOVE the parody stuff of him like in Robot Chicken Star Wars (Jen....this one is a MUST for you), Family Guy or even the Lego stuff ("I have you now!" "Uh sir, you know he can't hear you, right?). Some of that stuff is written beautifully.
I haven't played "Jedi: Fallen Order" but what I've seen of Vader in that....he looks and acts like he did in my "11 year old" nightmares.

In “The Empire Strikes Back” during the battle in the snow on Hoth, Luke’s call sign is “Rogue Leader”, head of Rogue Squadron. Wedge is “Rogue Three”. At no time is “Rogue One” mentioned.
Given that there was no “Rogue Squadron” in Rogue One, I like to think that the Rogue Squadron on Hoth was created to honour the heroes of Rogue One. They retired the callsign “Rogue One” for those heroes which is why Luke was using callsign “Rogue Leader”.

Jen, your reaction was superb! This is an excellent movie, and a great addition to the Star Wars saga. You cannot ask for anything more.
I loved the look on your face when you saw Darth Vader emerge. When I saw this in the theatre, we had already known that Vader was in the movie, and it was so thrilling to see him on screen for the first time in years. Not counting his glorified cameo in Revenge of the Sith.
Darth Vader is the coolest movie villain of all-time. The moment when Vader is on the rebel ship, the audience was in awe, and it made you wonder with how bad-ass that scene is, should we be cheering for Vader?

Jen! I'm all teared up. How can you watch that and not be? I guess you're just tougher than I am, so I'm staying on your good side for sure!!! :)
I think you may have missed something about Galen. You were talking about how he was bad in helping the Empire finish the Death Star. If you go back and listen to his message, he said he knew that, had he not helped, Krennic would eventually find someone else to finish it. So he made himself indispensible, which was the perfect place from which to implement his sabotage in the Death Star. He had no choice. Without his submission to the Empire, the Death Star would've had NO weakness and they would've never been able to blow it up in IV.
Wasn't it incredible, that shot of the destroyer coming out of the shadow of the Death Star, then having it right in front of our faces, with the huge dish being lowered into the body of the Death Star. What an incredible shot. Then showing the huge destroyers in front of it, making the destroyers look like bugs!

Well, I don't think people will judge you for liking Vader. I have seen many female reactors watch the Star Wars movies and even though I heard a couple of them saying Harrison Ford as Han Solo looks cute, their order of favourite characters appears to be: 1. R2D2 2. Darth Vader and 3. a far off threeway tie between Han, Chewie and Leia. When I watched the OG movies and then read books situated in the Star Wars universe, the way the Death Star plans were aquired was different. It was a group of Bothan (an alien race) spies that brought the plans to the Rebellion at the cost of many lives. This brought them prestige and positions of influence in the later, by the former Rebellion formed, New Republic. I think in the OG movies someone (I think Mon Mothma, who is also one of the leaders here in the movie) even mentions the lost lives of Bothans, but this could also be a mandela effect from reading so much of the Star Wars novels.

Rogue One is by far my favorite SW movie and I argue that it’s the best of all of the SW movies. My favorite part about watching you watch this for the first time was all of the geeking out you were doing about Vader. And all I wanted more than anything was to see your reaction at the end. My brother and I went to see this a second and third time in theaters just for the ending. Vader - Hall Monitor Champion.
P.S. Chirrut, the blind badass, is played by Donnie Yen. He’s an amazing Hong Kong actor and stuntman as well as a true martial arts master. There are so many movies of his that you should watch. I’d start with Ip Man as it’s the most popular and probably won’t alienate your audience. Go nuts from there. He will be in John Wick 4!
P.P.S. If you liked the direction here, Gareth Edwards did the 2014 reboot of Godzilla which I recommend and his first movie was made on a MacBook for a few thousand bucks called Monsters. It’s actually really good.

You're among good company, Jen. I don't think anyone that saw this in theaters expected the entire Rogue One team to die. There's also references to other Star Wars series mentioned in the movie, the Rebels animated series. During one of the scenes at the Jedi Temple (the one on Yavin, HQ for the Alliance), you hear an announcement made for a "General Syndulla". That would be Hera Syndulla, one of the main characters of that series. You also catch glimpse of 'The Ghost', the ship she pilots, when the Rebel fleet arrives at Scarif (she survives the space battle and presumably is still around during Ep 6).

12:30 ish - Saw knew that he would have gotten them all killed if they waited for him. You'll notice he had robotic pieces for legs and couldn't move fast. Even though the rest were running at full speed, they barely made it off of Jedha in time. Saw was an extremist, but he always put the cause first. He's got a backstory, but in order to find out what it is, you have to watch the animated shows; "The Clone Wars", "The Bad Batch", and "Rebels". The Clone Wars ran for 7 seasons, The Bad Batch has 1 season released and season 2 is in production, and Rebels ran for 4 seasons. All of them are canon and add a lot of lore to the overall universe's narrative. Not giving away spoilers here; but Clone Wars gives a lot of details about the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan, the Jedi Council, and Chancellor Palpatine. You also learn a lot about individual clone troopers. The Bad Batch picks up at the end of the Clone Wars/Revenge of the Sith, and shows the early days of the Empire. Rebels takes place over a few years prior to Rogue One/A New Hope.
A New Hope (Episode IV) is referred to as 0 BY (Battle of Yavin/destruction of the Death Star). Events prior to that are measured in "BBY" (Before the Battle of Yavin), while events afterward are measured in "ABY" (After the Battle of Yavin). I'll post the full timeline at the end of this reply.
18:42 - "Nobody is a cooler villain than Vader." -:- Yeah, we've been saying that since 1977. 😁
23:00 - When the Rebel fleet came out of hyperspace... I had chills do a marathon up and down my spine, and goosebumps on my arms when I saw this movie in theaters. It literally took me back to being 10 years old in 1977 when I first saw Star Wars (before it was A New Hope) in theaters. No other movie had sent me through time like that before. Rogue One is an amazing movie, and it's still in my top 5 Star Wars movies ever. As soon as the movie was over in theaters, we hauled ass home to watch Episode IV. Ever since that day, I haven't been able to watch one without watching them both back to back. They meld together that damned good.
30:20 - Vader was at his most brutally powerful here. He's had ~19 years of pain, anger, suffering and hatred to live with since Padme' died, and he had believed his child died with her. Now that you've seen Rogue One along with the Original Trilogy and Prequel Trilogy, I can tell you that after the Death Star is destroyed in A New Hope, Vader, having sensed "that pilot's connection to The Force", hired bounty hunters to find out who that pilot was. It was during the 3 year period between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back that he had secretly learned that the pilot's last name was "Skywalker". He neglected to pass this information on to Emperor Palpatine, which is why he questioned how the pilot could be "the offspring of Anakin Skywalker" when he spoke to Palpatine after the battle of Hoth.
31:30 - There was actually a discussion about all of the main characters dying prior to filming. I forget exactly who it was that brough the idea up to Disney Executives, but they put forth the argument that it would show the kind of sacrifice that isn't usually shown if the main characters died. Surprisingly, they met very little resistance to the idea of killing them all off. Also, that Vader scene near the end was part of the "reshoots", and was a late addition to the script. Garreth Edwards wanted to add one more appearance by Vader, so the scene was hastily written, and was one of the last things filmed. Literally weeks before the movie was to premier.
31:53 - No. Lucas had very little to do with this movie. It was John Knoll who suggested it right after the Disney purchase, and it was decided that Lucasfilm should make "Anthology" movies (related to the overall story, but not one of the "Episodes"). The idea was approved almost immediately. However, George Lucas has gone on record saying that he loved this film much more than he did Episode VII (The Force Awakens).
    Edit:
Timeline: Episode I (33 BBY), Episode II (23 BBY), The Clone Wars /animated/ (23-19 BBY), Episode III (19 BBY), The Bad Batch (19-?? BBY), Solo (10 BBY), Obi-Wan Kenobi /forthcoming/ (10 BBY), Rebels (4-1 BBY), Andor /forthcoming/ (? BBY), Rogue One ( a few months - 0 BBY), Episode VI (0 BY), Episode V (3 ABY), Episode VI (4 ABY), The Mandalorian /seasons 1 and 2/ (9-10 ABY), The Book of Boba Fett (10 ABY), The Mandalorian /season 3 - forthcoming/ (?? ABY), Episode VII (34 ABY), Episode VIII (34 ABY), Episode IX (?? ABY).

I'm excited. I'm having to admit this (may be) is my favorite Star Wars movie. That's hard to do, but it just leaves me satisfied, as a movie and a piece of Star Wars. Can't wait to share it with you. Here we go!

If you're wondering why they didn't go a word scroll in the beginning, it's because they reserve that for the main trilogies. Individual stories (Solo, Rogue One) don't get the same treatment.

Love K2SO. A shame we lost the whole cast, at the end of this movie.

This film is what the whole opening title scroll for the original Star wars (Episode IV) was all about...
It is a period of civil war.

Many years ago My friend would jokingly say oh it's a great movie everybody dies!
So when I saw Rogue One I told him you'd love it especially the end.
    Why?
    It's your favorite everybody diesñ

There is a Radio Dramatization of the original trilogy that came out in the early-mid 80's. And New Hope starts a little earlier on the timeline than the film, and explains how Leia got the plans. And that happened quite differently than shown in Rogue One, fits more along the line from Vader "several transmission were beamed to this ship by rebel spies". I'm not sure if that's how Lucas had planned it or if it was something the writer of the radio drama Brian Daley made up.
I really enjoyed seeing this on the big screen. That final battle was EPIC, and the Vader scene was cool, even though it doesn't match up too well with the Vader we see in A new hope 🙃

I bought the trilogy CD box set of the NPR radio dramas, after loving them as a kid. Even though the majority of the voice actors were different (save for Luke and Threepio), it really expanded the story. The full interrogation scene between Vader and Leia really scared me back then, it was like a horror movie in my head!

@@SJHFoto I might be wrong here, but I think I've read somewhere that they were a part of the official canon for quite some time. Not sure if it was Lucas himself that later on put them in the EU or if it happened when Disney came up with the Legends canon.

Loved your reaction. It's one of my favorite of the Star Wars movies. It was definitely one to see in the theaters and so incredible. Definitely sad to see all the good guys perish, but you are right. It does make sense and makes it more real. Tbh, the Darth Vader scene is probably my favorite. I know he was killing Rebels, but to see the power of Vader was great to see, and I will say the roar in the theater was almost deafening when that scene came up. Love your videos and can't wait to see more content.

Great reaction as always, Jen. I love this movie. It's gritty and dark and so very SW. I've seen lots of talk that the Andor series (Cassian's story) is going to have the same look and feel and I'm really looking forward to it.
