The big warehouse at the end is a matte painting by Michael Pangrazio. It's massive, painted on glass with the small area clear where the guy pushing the crated-up Ark was composted in. It remains on screen for a long time, which is unusual for a matte painting since the longer you look the more they seem fake. Pangrazio is that good. I had a large poster of it as a kid. It's a little sloppy up close, but it gains in quality if you step back. Too much detail would look fake he said. It took him three months to paint. His matte paintings for Return of the Jedi are insane.

The scene in the map room is a textbook example of how a musical score can elevate a movie to a new plateau. During this time John Williams was at his peak and this movie is one of his best examples. Of course the entire movie is just a perfect storm of story, actors, director and production. One of the best movies ever made.

I can remember when this came out in the theater. I was 17.
When Indy says, "what truck?" I was like, "Jesus, this guy is determined" and then when he comes charging out on that horse I was like, "Well this shit just kicked into 5th gear" and during the entire chase scene I was like, "This is unbelievable!"
    What a ride!
Lucas fully understood just what made the Saturday matinee hero of the the 30s and 40s so popular. Took that and translated it into a modern movie and it was instant success. Basically it's the same thing he did in creating Star Wars.

Romancing the Stone was basically a rip-off of Indiana Jones but for a rip-off it was really good and had a great cast. IMHO it doesn't reach the benchmark that Raiders of the Lost Ark set 3 years before it (I don't think I've seen a single action-adventure movie that has).

A couple of improvised scenes in this:
    - When Indy is up against the all-black sword fighter and pulls out his gun and shoots the guy, that was devised because Harrison had dysentery and couldn't do the full rehearsed sword vs whip fight. Someone came up with the gun killing the guy as a quick-to-shoot alternative which audiences LOVED.
    - When the snake falls on Marion's neck in the well of the souls, that was Steven Spielberg's idea (he didn't tell her ahead of time and her glare back at him is real)
    - When Indy says to Marion on the ship, "It's not the age, it's the mileage", that was Harrison's idea.
Also, when Indy and Sullah are getting the Ark, if you look at one of the pillars with the hieroglyphics (I think it's the one on the left in the scene) you can see R2-D2 and C-3PO from Star Wars. Difficult to see unless you have a really good copy (damn near impossible on the original VHS).

There was a TV show called Warehouse 13 that was in part inspired by the ending scene where the Ark was boxed up and stored in a vast warehouse. The show aired from 2009 to 2014 and was part Sci Fi and part paranormal, and followed a group of archivists who had to recover all these ancient powerful artifacts and securely store them in the warehouse. It had a great cast with lots of chemistry, and was a really fun.

There's been a lot of people "explaining" over the years how Indy survived hanging onto the sub for that distance, but the honest truth is probably the fact that most diesel subs of the era spent very little time entirely underwater, usually they had at least the tower above the surface for exhaust and air intake. Usually they were at surface level unless they spotted something to shoot at.

Listen out for the "Wilhelm Scream". You can hear it in your video at 19:12 as that German fella gets thrown out of the back of the truck and onto the bonnet of that car behind. Aaaaargh he goes.
That same scream has featured in dozens of movies... at least five of them starring Harrison Ford. The first movie it was in was made in 1951. In some of those 50s movies the same scream was played multiple times. It is a good scream, to be fair. It was played in 'Die Hard - with a vengeance', 'The Fifth Element', 'Planet of the Apes (2001)', 'The Lord of the Rings (Two Towers)', 'The Pirates of the Caribbean', and many many more.

The third Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, remains my favorite.
This film is one that still sounds weird to me with the "Indiana Jones" prefix. When I watched it, it was still just called Raiders of the Lost Ark. But then, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was still being marketed only as Star Wars, so there is that. I think both got their extra bits to their marketing titles around the same time (though Star Wars had long before appended both Episode IV and A New Hope in the title crawl). It makes sense they'd do it, but it just doesn't seem right when people say it as such, to my mind. At least they didn't edit the title as it appears on screen, though, which is nice.

Whereas George Lucas, without an inch of sarcasm, said "Ive got something better than Bond". And thus came this 1981 film and it spawned 4 sequels through the years. But the 5th instalment, well, that remains to be judged individually.

One of my all-time fave films - arguably the best of the franchise and one of the greatest action/adventure films ever made. Ford's second iconic role (after Han Solo) truly makes it his own with a great cast including the sexy and feisty Karen Allen (lucky enough to meet her and she's even more beautiful and down to earth IRL). When I saw this when it first came out my mom took me and my sister into the theatre lobby to chastise us before the screening (we were cutting up) and threatened that we'd be getting punished when we got home. The film was such a great experience viewing it with my parents my mom totally forgot to follow up on the grounding :D ;d Yes by all means watch the entire franchise; you won't regret it Jen. Nice job as usual here.

Really happy you've gotten around to the Indiana Jones movies. The next one, Temple of Doom takes place before Raiders. Sort of confusing as the timeline messes some people up who never seen the trilogy. Each movie should be viewed as it's own enclosed story as there really isn't a continuation of an overall story like Star Wars or Back to the Future.

The fight scene where Indy just shot the guy in black was complete improve. They'd rehearsed that scene a few times that day, and Harrison was really sick and running a fever, that's why he was so sweaty, and he just didn't have it in him to do it again when they actually started rolling, so instead, he just shot the guy and Lucas loved it, so he called "Cut! Print!"

Hi. I was 8 when Raiders came out but didn't get to see it on big screen until many years later. It is my favorite Indiana Jones movie and my favorite movie of all time. I became an Indy fan after seeing Last Crusade in theaters at the age of 16 and have been crushing out on Harrison Ford since then. He was, of course devastatingly handsome as Indy and made hundreds of girls hearts a flutter. His tanned physique, that heart stopping smile those gorgeous hazel eyes, the rugged scar... Of course I loved Harrison as Han Solo, too!!!

Spielberg and Lucas were wondering what kind of movie to make next after "Star Wars." Spielberg wanted to do "James Bond," but Lucas brought up the 1930's cliffhanger movies. With their second choice signed, another franchise was born and Harrison Ford became "Dr. Henry Jones, Jr." This movie got a generation of college students to "dig in the dirt," and made Archeology cool. When I saw "Raiders" in the theater, it looked like it had enough action for THREE movies. 7:38 Introducing, two-fisted Marion Ravenwood. 15:00 In the 1981 theatrical version, you can see glass between Harrison Ford and the very real Cobra.

The big guy that Indy fights next to the rotating airplane (Pat Roach) is known as a stunt actor because he is the actual guy doing the whole thing (unlike some parts of this fight scene where Harrison is doubled by a stuntman). He can also be seen in Temple of Doom as a bearded badguy that Indy fights and in The Last Crusade as a Gestapo officer. Sadly he passed away in 2004 at the age of 67.

My thoughts 100%. I didn't hate Crystal Skull but I rolled my eyes a good portion of the movie because of just highly implausible scenarios,* even for an Indy movie! (something I never did with any of the other ones). And I too am hoping that #5 will blow our socks off. Harrison Ford will be nearly 80 when it comes out!

Indy 2 (Temple of Doom) was okay but is, for me, the weakest of the first three Indy movies. Crystal skull shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the original trilogy... IMHO. It was silly, implausible and Shia LeBouf didn't do the movie any favors. :/
