Thank you for doing a simple, but timeless bowl. As a beginner, seeing your design come to life and tool control (novice on both) is helpful and inspiring for me.
Hello Tomislav, that really is a beautiful wood. What you have made of it is as simple as it is elegant. A very beautiful bowl. I can fully understand that it is something very special to make something just for yourself. I can't imagine turning 400 of these shotglasses, for example. Woodturning is my (newest) hobby and I only ever do it for myself. So thank you again for taking the time to give beginners like me invaluable insights into woodturning with your videos. Greetings Andreas
Thank you Andreas very much, Sometimes I need this moments when I turn just for myself to relax and I do try to have this moments more.... So being a hobby turner like yourself is sometimes a great thing... Once again thank you for support 🤗
Beautifully done simple bowl. Which, we all know are never as simple as they seem. You make it look effortless. Thank you for sharing your tips, tricks, and expertise.
A simple bowl in your opinion made to look absolutely effortless as a bit of relaxation. You have an absolutely awesome ability that I can only dream of as a beginner wood turner! Your videos are a real incentive to me to achieve more on my lathe.
Thank you Stephen, we were all beginners at one point and its all about time and practice, much like with any other trade.... Just spend as much time as you can and always try to learn more and test your self.... Once again thank you very much for watching and support what I do
Beautiful and smooth work on a beautiful wood grain. It shows that you really enjoyed the time and process. Wish you will have time and energy to enjoy your craft for a long time. Best vibes for your family and you for this end of year. Cheers
I love how sapele looks. So beautiful!! I was on the edge of my seat when you had to go a bit deeper then planned. What a beautiful bowl, much can be said about the beauty of simple designs. As always, you inspire me to do better 😊😊😊
Beautiful bowl Tomislav. I think Sapele is lovely but a lot of people don't rate it at all and some are pretty hostile towards it. However, that just leaves more for the rest of us. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Im used to flat work, using old hand tools...... Sapele is my favourite wood. Its very common in Ireland too, its the second cheapest wood here after Beech..... I will probably be using lots of it when i start turning. Nice work Tomi, shes a beaut 😁
Good morning. Really happy for this video. I recently picked up a bunch of the Sapele mahogany and haven’t had the chance to turn it yet. Looks absolutely fantastic. Hope you’re doing well today.
I hope you and your family had a very Merry Christmas, Mr. Tomislav. This was a very enjoyable video that was both a celebration of the joy of turning and a good bit of shared instruction. The simple, elegant design looks timeless while letting that beautiful piece of Sapele be the shining star. I know you said you might remove the foot, but I think leaving it is a nice, subtle artifact of the turner's hand. Very well done Sir, you make us want to be better with every video you share. Wishing you and your an exceptional Happy New Year!!!
Sir, thank you very much for kind words and taking the time to watch my videos and support what I do 🤗 We had lovely lunch with all the family and it was lovely.... Hope you had the same? Thank you very much for great wishes and All the best in New Year to you and your family as well ☺️
Very much enjoy the narration as you turn. Gives a real insight to your thought process as you progress. Helpful to me as a novice to follow along. I watch your hands as much as possible. Love the finesse with the scraper when you turned the foot. As an aside-have you ever met in person any of the others from the 4 way projects?
Thank you very much for kind words 🤗 Unfourtually I haven't got the opportunity to meet them, hopefully one day I'll visit United States and Canberraa especially to have a coffee with my mentor....
I use Sapele a lot in my end-grain cutting boards (along with Maple, Black Walnut, and Cherry). I like working with Sapele a lot... it is prone to having some really nice chatoyancy. I haven't turned it much as the cutoffs from my cutting boards are at most 50mm x 300mm/ 2" x 12" (usually smaller) so the most I can get from the cutoffs is a small plate or platter.
Love endgrain cutting boards.... If I get a chance to get wider sapele for plates I'll be grabing that for sure, those will be some unique plates and platters.... Thank you very much for watching
What camera do you use for your video? The quality is excellent and you have great composition of your shots as well. Very good to see and learn! Thank you Tomislav!
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thank you. I actually turned a little bowl from pear tree. It was really hard wood. No catches but almost. I realize you can't push a bowl gouge straight into the button of the bowl. Need to keep it in shear action. Is that correct? Thanks again
Hi Terry, greetings to Ireland, which part? I have that collar since its new lathe so just until I get muscle memorie, so its about right height.... The rest has a lot of travel so its just faster until I get familiar with this perticular height..... But I do start to like it so I might do a video on this and how to make one.... Its old turning trick that I Picked up as apprentice..... Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Hi Tomislav. Just wandering as beginner why you used a half inch spindle gouge on the outside of this bowl, but in the last video you used a bowl gouge for the outside of the plate. What should I be using.
Hi Richard, sorry for confusion, I usually use what I grab first, most of the time its spindle gouge for the outside, but what ever comes first to hand as there are on the bench next to lathe and usually there is shavings on it😅.... Not the best way to show beginners what to use , but genwrally I reccomend bowl gouge as its little more user frendly, especially for someone just starting out....
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Please don't apologise. I was just wondering. You are a great teacher and you have helped me with a lot of things, as well as the great Richard Raffle.
If you have watched last 4 ways video on tray, I put that notch to undercut the bead easier.... It can also work if that side of scraper is complete round over to have a sharp point to do decorations...
Entandrophragma cylindricum is the scientific name of the tree. The common name Sapele is after Sapele, Nigeria a town with a lumber mill from which many wood products from this tree were made.
Beautiful bowl, Tomislav. 😊 I am glad that you were able to turn for “you”. Woodturning can be so much fun. 😊😊
Indeed , thank you for watching

Tomislov, you mentioned other cabinet work you did, such as kitchen and other things. I would like to see what you did before you turned.
Unfourtually I don't have much pictures, I mostly worked for others , like companies....

What is the purpose of the small notch on the left side of the scraper?
If you have watched last 4 ways video on tray, I put that notch to undercut the bead easier.... It can also work if that side of scraper is complete round over to have a sharp point to do decorations...
When you uses Odyes oil do you put anything under it first?
If you mean like sanding sealers, I don't use those and when I use odies I just apply it on wood....
I give this work an average to high score
I hope you will accept my feedback ☺
Sure, no problem.....

Talking of beautiful wood, have you ever heard of Ocotea bullata?
Nope, a lot of it I don't have acces to.... Import fees and all that fun stuff😔
