Goalkeeper Training: Tips for Goalkeeper Tryouts

- Lots of keepers have been asking me for some tips on how to do well in their goalkeeper tryouts so I decided to put together a video that covers what most coaches look for in a goalkeeper for club and highschool level soccer.
There are several different aspects that coaches pay attention to in tryouts but these were the main points that I felt all coaches pay special attention to.

Communication is also an important part of the game. Coaches always look for that
+xXGH0ST980Xx Most definitely I had communication on the list to talk about but the video was already pushing 8 minutes so I decided to let that aspect go, I will be doing a video covering communication and communication drills keepers can do to learn how to properly tell their team where to go
+Soccer Drills And Goalkeeper Training that would be a great help. I'm in a new team with 30 other players, so do you have any tips to learn names really quickly?
+Will Miller GK .. learn the names of your back 4 .. if you've not trained with them previously, ask them their names before the game and keep using them when communicating. Other names will come while you get talking to the team and listening to others as well

Its Purgr Its better not to make mistakes. But yeah.
And how do you have to react than?
ItzDaryll you have to react the same you did before you made that mistake
I just give a thumbs up, still got in as a goalkeeper. However, I saved the ball alot of times and the opposite team only had one score.
Simonas Duksta it’s not as simple as “don’t make a mistake,” (I wish it was) sometimes mistakes are just part of nerves. Speaking from experience, when you make a mistake, you just have to get up, forget about it, and keep making saves and doing what you were before you made that mistake. Coaches want to see you stay positive after making a mistake, but also want to see you recognize your mistake and move on from it. When I make mistakes, one thing that helps me get my confidence back (while in the game) is making up for the mistake by making a huge save afterwards.
Anyways, mistakes are part of the game, it’s hard to avoid them;but it’s how you get back up and react to them that matters.
Im great with diving but i get nervous trying to catch the ball
Same bro but just go at it the more you try catch it the better you'll get at catching it
Practise handling exercises with ball
If you are scared of catching the ball because of the pain then there is a trick I use to prevent that from happening. You see if you just let your arm hanging and get shot with a ball onto it then it will hurt but if you punch the ball right before it hits your hand it won't hurt at all. You will just feel the ball. It's basically force against force and the more force you use against something the less you feel it.
Here is an example: Right before you catch the ball / toss ot away from the goal make sure you have your arms posotioned the way that they will be able to accelerate and moved right before the impact with the ball.
That's at least how I use it.

I watched you since 2013 and I learned a lot and in 2016 I got in Sheffield Utd but got released at the shadow squad and I went to a normal team and watched you for 1 more year and now I got into Nottingham Forest Academy Tryouts and I will use all the moves

I always watch these videos and get super pumped for soccer, head out to my field for drop-in soccer, and then promptly flop around and fail haha

@@slurplul I think this is because you are landing onto the top of your body (shoulders up). Next time try to land on your side or bum and don't rely on using your hands to cushion your fall. This has happened to me before, but with a little practice it'll stop.

This year was my grade nine year then soccer practice was coming and the needed a keeper so I tried. I played hockey for goalie so had an idea what was happening but way more diving but that year I stole the starter role from a grade 11 and we made it to silver in my first year playing.that was the farthest they’ve been or there first medal 💯

Lol im almost 13 and find this useful for mah co-ed goalkeeper skills. A lot of the kids kick the ball and its coming fast but its on the ground. When im not on turf, the ball shifts because of a hole or something. How should I save these balls??

Keep your eyes focused on the ball, come out and get your hands ready. It works with me and I'm 9.

anyone have tips for me? i'm kinda short and i used to be a midfielder but now i want to be a goalkeeper. my jumping and reflexes are very good but my height is a disadvantage, anyone have tips?
if your going to come out and save balls, like attacking highballs, you have to learn to jump high and catch it first time. If you come out for a 1 on 1 keep your hands high incase of a chip shot

The Shotwell Brothers dont come out much and practise divng if your reflexes are good your ok
i have a tip GET TALLER SHORTY hhhh kidding i am fifteen and i am real short but i am a good keeper just try to train to jump high if u are short mabye ur lightweight so mabye it wont be problem
The Shotwell Brothers work on your feet strength so you can be able to jump high but if you can jump high then your good

Gained a bunch of weight due to life issues, but was a really good keeper when I was younger (a bit more than ago 2 years ago) I'm 6 foot though which is a huge advantage (for a JV team) and I'm amped to get back out there and try to get back into shape and help my team. I've been playing with my friends who are still on the team and I think I can still extend as far as I could about 2 years ago. I've been binging these videos due to nervousness even though I've known almost everything I've seen in them. Wish me luck!

Great video, your tips are amazing. If I were to add one more, I'd say the best goalkeepers are those who play simple. No unnecessary moves, no showing off, and always looking for the safest way to catch/pass the ball.
