Concorde - Take-off over the neighbourhood - Heathrow

  • [RE-CREATION Video - 15 years later: • [ RECREATION ] Concord... ]
Four weeks before last flight in 2003 - filmed roaring over my house - captures the speed. Focus improves! I climbed up on a wall - hence the crazy bit - sometimes the swirl from Concorde blew our bin lids off. After-burners can be seen. If the wind was right you could hear it start its take-off run on the ground. (August 2014 - just realized that the front wheel bay doors are closing as it comes into view)

At 7.30 in the evening I would hear a distant low roar from miles away and the china cupboard would shake. I would always step out onto the dockside and within 15 seconds Concorde would fly directly over me heading south, her deafening roar and after burners glowing and then immediately do a turn west to line herself up with the Bristol Channel, supersonic speed and New York.

A shame that the doomed air France Concorde was mostly from negligent errors by the French pilot from overloading the rear baggage compartment, over filling the taxi fuel tank at the very back, filling all the rest of the tanks to the brim. This allowed no give, were any tyre pieces flicked up into under wing/tank. And to cap it, took off with a rear tail wind. this made the overall weight of the Concord excessive. The rest is history

I was sadly never alive to see one of these magnificent birds, but I imagine they were a sight to behold in their time.

Great historical footage, and the car alarm is a nice touch and hint of the power Concorde had! Thank you for sharing!

I occasionally got underneath it when it was taking off over Hatton Cross tube. There is nothing like feeling shock waves reverberating around the jelly of your chest, and hearing panicked car alarms triggered under the flight path. Impossible to convey on video, many try and the vast majority can't get near it. For all its ad hoc brevity, this video is easily one of the best. Fantastic.

Hi Marcos, just read your comment. I work at NPR in Los Angeles and I'm currently producing an audio series on Concorde. I'd love to include your memory of the overwhelming noise of the plane. My email is listed on my TH-cam page in the "About" section. Feel free to send me a note, I'd love to include your perspective in our audio story.
