    I’m not a morning person. When our marriage was young, I had to tell my husband not to speak to me until after my coffee and shower. We immediately stopped arguing every morning. And he started bringing me my first cup of coffee.

    My grown kids have thanked me for teaching them a morning routine of "5 things" (one for each finger on one hand): make bed, get dressed, brush teeth, pray, stretch. This routine sets their compass and then they are ready for whatever comes their way.

    Thanks for being real about how you tried evening and morning routines that didn’t work for you. I have also tried to do devotions in the morning, or in the evening after my baby goes to sleep. I wake up a hour before my alarm without trying, which is almost two hours before my husband and daughter wake up. The very first thing I do is leave a message each for my two closest friends (both who live in a different country to me and one who's in a different time zone) just so they have something nice to wake up to and know someone is thinking of them.

    For some of us the mornings are hard... moms struggling with chronic pain, mornings are usually the hardest, when things are stiff and body isn’t cooperating. We have to take courage and never give up. (Also probably not compare our morning routine to someone else’s who is not battling chronic pain. 😅)

    • @wendysmith8298
      @wendysmith8298 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I almost didn’t watch this because all of these people with their morning routines depress me. I have chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia and mornings just hurt. I love how Dawn lets us know that it’s ok to not have a “perfect” routine. It’s ok to be real.

    • @debbydoodler33
      @debbydoodler33 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes! I used to be a morning person but chronic pain definitely makes mornings harder (but I still have 2 small people who get up before me!), and evenings (my brain shuts off at like 7pm and I don't want to talk to anyone). My routines consist of: try to reduce current pain level and avoid triggering more pain, feed/hydrate myself, do something for mental stimulation. I don't get much fancier than that right now lol.

    I love that your message was not like "do these 5 things in the morning and be successful", but instead, "find out what works for you".😊 I'm a kind of person who needs to get things written down before going to bed, or else I keep thinking about them all night. I put even littlest things on my phone calendar. I've even put "take a shower" as a notification sometimes.😅

    I have always been a “night owl” until I needed to change my health. After hearing so much about how important sleep is to health, I decided to get up early. My “Good Morning” list starts at 8 pm. When I do the same things every night, it starts me toward feeling sleepy. This was new for me. Not everyone wants to set up the day on the night before...but when I do, I feel better for sleep at night and then sets me up for a good day.

      I agree that there's not one right way to live, but I think that even for the same person there's not one right way to live. Seasons change in our lives and what might have worked for a season in my life (of days or weeks), now doesn't fit, and that's okay, too. Learning to be gracious to myself through ALL the seasons of life. Thanks for your post! So wise!

    Going on you tube is a part of my morning routine. It makes me feel less lonely and motivates me to get going and do things; especially, watching your videos. I have a cup or two of coffee, get my motivation fix, and get started on my day. It takes about an hour. I have tried getting up early and following other morning routines, but they don't work for me. I feel empty until I get on you tube and watch other people living their lives. I don't know why this is, but it really works for me. You inspire me to apply your ideas to my life and helps me live creatively.

    For me it's the birds singing. I'm up at 4:30 a.m. for some quiet time before I get my first Granddaughter up for school (yes, she and her Dad are waiting for the bus while the moon is still out). I open the patio door for the dog to go out and leave it open so I can hear the birds at around 5:00 a.m. Love it. I do start my time off with TH-cam, but mostly people like you, Prepper Princess, Patera, and others that I feel will educate and inspire me for the day (but no Pinterest, FB, don't have Instagram or anything like that).

  • @battlearmanda

    Honestly, I think you hit the nail on the head that doing things first thing in the morning that don't excite you will lead to you laying in bed. I always wanted to be that person that works out first thing in the morning, but I'd rather sleep or lay in warm covers than workout. I got tired of fighting myself and feeling like a failure so I started working out after my workday before I do anything else when I get home -- it has made all the difference. My morning is short, I give myself enough time for getting ready, breakfast and getting to work on time (now it's even shorter since I just need to stroll down my hallway to the office). I've learned that doing things first thing doesn't invite my focus.

    I watched your morning routine and the Daily Connoisseur’s morning routine - I connected to both these options, but I had a good laugh because I think that your chatting with Tom was very similar to what my husband and I would say about the mornings! We have a 7 year old who is a morning person and early riser - so having quiet time before the kids wake up would require a 4am rising time! It is a wet morning here , so I get Dawn’s grounding staring at the sunrise. I like to smell the air and listen to the little animals around our house. It really is grounding and a great start to the morning. Thanks for this Dawn!

    I always thought I was a night person. But really, I am a morning person. Who knew?!?! I read a book about the importance of sleep and did one of the challenges and found out my rhythm really is in the morning and now, I seem to get more done. But I am with you, my three kids know not to talk to me until I am done with my first cup of coffee! LOL They rarely wake up that early anyways. I found out too, it is easier for me to do my devotion and practice contemplative prayer at night when the kids go to bed. The house is soooo quiet at night and I love the glow of a candle with a small lamp. It just really sets my heart to God. We are all created differently and supporting each other in our differences is so meaningful. Thank you for your videos!! You are an inspiration for me.

I have NEVER been a morning person and now that I'm retired, I go to bed after 1:00 a.m. (late night reading habit) and I don't get up until at least 10. I’ve transitioned from a night owl most of my life to a morning-ish person. To me it’s worth getting up at least an hour before my kids so I can have peaceful time. For me it’s coffee, ten minute stretch, personal and work emails, and a TH-cam video that makes me happy.

I've always been a "morning person", BUT I need an hour by myself to wake up and just do my routine before I can even think about speaking to anyone. And at night, by 7 or 8pm......don't try to talk about anything of importance. I'm toast. You guys are awesome!!

    40 years ago, your dream morning was my morning routine. It was the only way I got some quiet time to myself. When the kids got up, it was full-tilt boogie. In the evening I had to make a list for the next day so that I wouldn’t stay awake in bed thinking about all that. Whatever works for you. Now, it’s totally different.

    I tried to start watching this several times thinking that this was gonna tell me to wake up early,work out,drink some tea and get motivated. I have seen dozens of videos like that thinking...that’s just not me. I’m not motivated in the morning to do anything but sit and stare out the window for a bit. I’m glad I watched this. I’m glad its relatable. I’m glad there is someone like me that thinks if I have to wake up to work out in the morning then, I don’t want to get up. Thank you for making this video. It’s taught me being successful is learning who we are and being ok with that and still strive to do the things we want to do. It’s actually a very powerful message. I use to think that I had to be super woman to get stuff done. This fantasy idea of the perfect me. But maybe the perfect me isn’t what some would call perfect but I get stuff done and that works for me. And if that’s what works for me then that’s perfect. I will re evaluate later and see if I need to adjust things. Thank you so much.

The only part of that that ever happens is the coffee part. 🫣 I love what you say about looking out the window. I live in the country and have such beautiful views and your comment about the sunrise being consistent hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m not consistent, but the sunrise is. I like getting up in the morning but I find it difficult because I naturally stay up late. A friend of mine said instead of working out first thing like a lot of people do, she does chores and I tried it and I actually love it. Unload the dishwasher or put on some laundry, it’s something useful I can do while I’m still waking up and don’t really have to use my brain for. Working from home I usually take my first call still in my PJs, then shower mid morning. Weekends are so much more productive for me because I can lie in but still get loads done (maybe it’s because it feels more varied than my desk job all day even if I do different projects as part of that).
