- (NOTE: AUDIO STARTS AT 0:20; PLEASE DON'T BLOW OUT YOUR HEADPHONES/SPEAKERS) The wild ending to the New York Knicks' (then) NBA record 18th-straight win, November 28, 1969 against the Cincinnati Royals:
-Down 100-105 with 0:16 left; Willis Reed hits 2 free throws.
-On the ensuing inbound pass, Dave DeBusschere steals Bob Cousy's pass and takes it in for the breakaway dunks, cutting the Royals' lead to 104-105.
-Cousy inbounds to Tom Van Arsdale, who is stripped by Reed, and the ball ends up in the hands of Walt Frazier, who drives and shoots, then gets his own rebound and is fouled on a putback with 0:02 remaining.
-Frazier makes two free throws, giving the Knicks a 106-105 lead, and Willis Reed steals then inbound pass to seal the victory.
*Bob Cousy, the Cincinnati Royals' 41-year-old player/coach, had entered the November 28, 1969 game against the New York Knicks after Oscar Robertson (33 PTS/10 AST) fouled out with 1:49 to play. It was just Cousy's third NBA game appearance in more than six-and-a-half years.
I watched this game at home (age 14) on a B&W tv. So this clip sure brings back happy memories. They had an incredible squad, with Red Holzman, a breakthrough coach innovating the fast break.
Saw that game. Miracle comeback! No three pointers at that time. Yes reed should have just held the ball.
Yes sir... I remember watching the game as well. I remember Cousy entering the game towards the end. What a game! What a game!
Reed had to have lost track of the score. I was yelling at the TV!
Dave DeBusschere wrote about this game in his book. His wife was watching the game on tape delay, when one of his friends called her at "half-time" and told her the final score, and that the Knicks had won. When she watched that incredible ending, she wanted to kill him for ruining it for her!
this game aired on a tape delay on wor tv channel 9!
finally, what was reed doing at the end?
why did he even attempt a shot?
Yes, it was foolish. Truth is, he looked like he charged into the Cincinnatti player- but the officials decided not to call it.
I remember this game as if were played yesterday. The game was played in some college gym in Cleveland. The lighting was so dim, that the game was televised in black and white! Jumping Johnny Green(former Knick) had 19 points and 20 rebounds. The Big O scored 33 before fouling out. Clyde scored 27, Reed 19.
Thanks!
Is that Bob Wolff on the call?
Yes Bob wolf
I saw that game. I thought it was the final championship game. Either this is a simulation with a glitch in it or I misremember.
Game was played st the Cleveland Arena
So current Knicks are halfway through with this streak of 18
I remember watching that game on tv. Great play by Dave D. But the thing that stands out, even then, was the stupid, bone head play by Reed at the end (may his soul rest in peace). Lucky he didn't get charged with the offensive foul, to ruin it all
Bob wolf it is
