One of the greatest Cubs games ever - it had everything. Love hearing Jack Brickhouse after Rick Reuschel scored the winning run ... just priceless stuff!

Funny story, I met Pete Rose a couple years back at his store in Vegas and asked him if he remembered the game, he didn’t recall but responded, “I remember the 23-22 game!”

Thats an excellent point. The 23-22 game took place less than two years after this one and quickly erased this one from the archives for many.

Can't help but wonder if Ken Griffey Jr. was at this game, with his dad on the road. Junior would have only been about 7 years old. How cool to think that one day...he himself would be standing at that same plate, smashing homeruns just like his dad did that day. Love this old footage. Thanks for posting. Hard to believe...this was almost 45 years ago. Hard to believe.

Wow, that has to be one of the 3 best Cubs games along with Sandberg/McGee game in the 1984 and the 26-24 game in 1979.

i agree. Everyone remembers the 1986 World Series....and in all fairness, he shouldn’t have been out there. I wish the Cubs would have hung onto Bill Madlock. It would have been great to see Madlock and Buckner in a Cubs line-up.

I didn't get to watch this game because we were at my younger brother's Little League playoff game. But everyone was keeping track of the Cubs -- including my brother and his teammates. The coach yelled, "You guys care more about the Cubs than you do about yourselves!" He was right. The Cubs won. My brother's team lost. Alas, the Cubs -- who still led the NL East by 2.5 games after this win -- went 21-42 the rest of the season and finished 20 games behind.

A good chunk of those 42 losses were against Philly and Pittsburgh, who toyed with the Cubs in August and September.
Herman Franks wanted to go into the all star break with the division lead and managed early July like it was late September. He rode Bruce Sutter like he was Man O War, got him sidelined, and paid for it dearly in the second half. Manny Trillo, having a career year early, stopped hitting and so did Bobby Murcer. Jerry Morales was in and out of the lineup the whole second half with a knee that he initially hurt in the all star game. Rick Reuschel, 16-4 after this game, went 4-6 the rest of the way.

Sutter was about a day and a half late in getting over to cover the bag. And Buckner was notorious for not wanting to race runners to the bag. He wanted the pitcher to cover if possible.
Another note. I know the wind was howling out but good God, the outfielders were practically on the warning track. Runners should have been taking extra bases whenever possible.

I was a kid watching this game at a friend's house. After the first inning where Cincinnati scored seven runs, we figured the game was over got on our bikes and rode around. We get down by a few other houses with kids in the neighborhood and they are in the house screaming. At that time no one had central air so windows and doors were open. We went into the house and as Cubs had scored six in the bottom of the first. We then stayed and watched the rest of the game.

7:32 Brickhouse said Buckner knew he didn't have time to throw on the Morgan play @ 1B but the problem was there was no pitcher covering.
The wind was really blowing this day. Murcer's opposite field job looked like a weak fly ball coming off his bat.
Best of all, here we have video confirmation that Rick Rueschel did indeed once go from first to third on a single to right.

I would have been watching this game from start to finish including Lead-Off Man and 10th inning shows since it was summer of my fourth grade year. Wind must have been doing it's usual late summer blowing out a ton. I mean, Murcer going oppo, Mitterwald reaching Waveland, and Griffey hitting it about 450. That ball was jumping. Great stuff though. Sutter's splitter which nobody could hit because they didn't study video like they do today, two blown calls at 1B because no replay back then, guys mostly just throwing their hands at the ball trying for hits, and Reuschel hitting which he was pretty good at.

What a wacky game this was. Where was the pitching?!? The two teams combined for 43 hits and 11 homers. Five different players had three hits and Ken Griffey had 5. There were 17(!) walks in the game, 10 by Cubs pitching. The Reds stole six bases; the Cubs didn't run off Bench that day. A final note: the loss dropped the Reds to .500 on the year, twelve and a half games in back of the Dodgers. The Cubs? The win put them 21 games over .500, atop the NL East, leading the Pirates by two-and-a-half and the Phillies by 3. Amazingly they would finish the year at .500, 81-81, and 20 games behind the Phillies. Talk about an epic collapse!

    • @markz6676

The late Rick Talley was primarily a newspaper sports columnist. If I recall, he was not the regular sports anchor. I was away at school this summer so I cannot remember the name of the normal anchor. WGN used many people in that era. Talley also wrote the book "The '69 Cubs." It was a tender look back at one of the best teams that didn't win anything. He eventually left Chicago for LA, wrote for a now-defunct newspaper. I had the chance to meet him at the LA Coliseum, as we were both covering a Raiders/Chargers game, probably 1989. He passed away very young. Let me say, simplygu -- I have a feeling you are young. TV was much simpler then. No flash, no special effects. You will note the lack of graphics on the WGN telecast. And, the writer of Talley's copy didn't really mention the changing score. But....devoting 14 minutes to baseball highlights....mind blowing. This is like a mini ESPN, only during the local news. Before you bash, check your history. You are sorely lacking in that department.
