This whole video is so precious. I’m a tenor player and I hold a special place in my heart for all the elderly. Seeing these men past the prime of their life put my skills to shame is nothing short of thrilling.

I can't stop commenting! That magnificent Arnett Cobb solo, 38.20........unbelieveable. He's playing with giants of jazz and pulls pure gold out of the bag. When I get to the Pearly Gates and there's some doubt about letting me in, I shall mention this solo.....the Gates will silently swing open!!

In Flying Home Dexter is beginning his solo by quoting from Illinois Jacquet original solo,(001:02) paying his respect to the master. Great to see the very underrated Budd Johnson. This is a REAL Supersax!
vova47 Bud was not, as you say, underrated. He was one of the main be-bop Jazz artists. He didn’t travel that extensively to Europe, as some of the others. Great player, who passed away about 5 years after this fantastic concert. Enjoy & Cheers!
Having been at Jazz concerts/clubs, whilst living in Europe during the 70’s, i must kick myself for having missed out on this extraordinaire (raw) tenorists battle at the famous North sea Jazz festival. These 5 guys are incredible, and with the great pianist Hank Jones, setting the pace. I’ve grown up with their fabulous Jazz music, it’s like flowing thru my veins. And folks i’ve been extremely lucky to have experienced this Jazz-art from the mid-50’s onwards, whilst an teenagers, and being incredibly overwhelmed with the superb bop/hard-bop phenomena. So here we have those Giants from yesteryears and what we are hearing now is by far the best Jazz-music ever, then and certainly now! Watching this, 40 years after the event, i can honestly say that i am thankful that we have YT whereby this music (hopefully) will be accessed by the current generation to hear what real, beautiful music, coming from the heart (emotional) Jazz, is all about. Lets enjoy this ripper & Cheers to all!
Ditto. Like you I experienced this wonderful sound in NYC in the fifties. Too bad so many great talents had to go to Europe to be appreciated.
william cherry Good to hear that you had that same incredible experience, William. Living during the 70’s in Holland i met many coloured Jazz expats (settling in Northern-Europe in the 50’s/60’s/70’s), before returning to Australia. Apart from their ART being appreciated these unique Jazz-Artist felt completely accepted as human beings. Away from all the nasty segregations etc. Good talking to you. Enjoy & Cheers!
Regarding your words about YT, my family is not really musical and I never developed a true liking for any particular genre until I heard Take Five for the first time on this very platform, about two years ago. Since then I've listened to the old greats of jazz non stop, and I just started to learn the alto Sax. I wish I could've seen heroes of mine like Dexter Gordon perform live, but this is as good as it gets.

wow Jaquet reproduces his famous solo on Flyin Home....he most imitated sax solo in history. Bud Johnson is a revelation, and Dexters tone is a religious experience! Cobb the all around classic swing/honkin tenor.. Great
Angels from Heaven.....how else can you explain such wonderful, mesmeric music? Arnett Cobb.....virtually crippled but turned up, mouth to reed and utter joy comes out. This vid shows the difference sax players show playing the same instrument........2019music?...no comment.

Thanks for sharing the full registration of this wonderful tenor battle. I was in the audience back in 1979 as 17 year old Jazz lover and it inspired me to start learning to play tenor saxophone a few years later.
It would be nice if you could mention the correct songs and featured artists in the above video text. I think this is the correct list of played songs:

Dex is not under rated. Staggering colossal giants on that stage that evening in Holland. The exchange’s during Lady be good made me smile from ear to ear.
Probably the most “rated” tenor who ever lived.
Not by a long shot everybody knows how bad long tall Dexter Gordon was. He's the biggest influence on John Coltrane. Dexter Blows hot and cool, recorded at doo tone in Watts California. Rest In Power Giant!

This swing shift was from where the HONKERS, who R&R lerized R&B, mid 50s, really took off: Joe Houston (a tx name ..,),McNeely, Red Prysock, Sil Austin, Earl Bostic, Lynn Hope, Noble Watts, many others ... And the insurrectionist chord revolutionaries who hated their guts of this mellow-yellow, over-emphasized (-metastazied ?) monotony swing that had relocated from the big plain state to the more urban K.C. There a new musical era was first created and conceived (McShann s band + a certain individual in it) before it rehappened along the Street in NYC. Dex was a bopper, but from the mildest end of the stick. GENE AMMONS should have been booked into this package as well...+Willis Jackson, Eddie Harris, Griffin.
To make a long story brief, what an incredible transition of jazz style variations was enacted and further delivered by the Texas Territorial Big Bands - such as Louis Trent, Lunceford etc. That s where these big-toned pioneers had their breaks in the depths of the depression when the black, field-working populace wanted to "go out and spend some cash .." It was called Saturday Nite Fish Fry ...acc to Louie Jordan, 4 one... ; but do you know what was The Midnite Ramble ...(Gatemouth told me..).
The Northsea should be commended with the Presidential Unit Citation 4 its undelible contribution to produce this topnotch festival that will stay insurpassable despite the fact the legends are gone by 2024 (just Rollins, Donaldson, Person remaing of the tenors). Paul Ackett really did it with Wein ! Europe will remain in awe and in debt of gratitude as long as the sun keeps on shining on this hate-ridden, wartorn decrepit strange system of odd balances of a planet - that, once again, is about to lose it ALL ... 🇫🇮
only man for me missing from this great line up is a growling sweet ben webster ,,,,arnet isj ustoff the planet and the lines from bud takes us back to lester ,, tate and jaquet what can be said that hasnt already been said ,,, never again will we see sutch giants

Ya, its looks like a big bell tenor in satin silver plate. I don't know what brand. I've seen him on video with a gold plated tenor before too.
