    The Mikado was first sold to Japanese Rail System and was called Mikado, the Japanese word for Emperor of Japan. During WW2 Mikado's were called McArthur's by U.S. railroads as no one wanted them named for something Japanese.

    FYI: The stub track at the coal mine is a runaway track. The switch is supposed to be left lined for it. Any cars that roll out of the mine will go up this track instead of going down the hill to the jct. This is common on steep grades as cars moving at high speed will bounce over derails without derailing. Merry Christmas 😊

    You’ve probably already covered this somewhere else’s but,… the devs said (currently) there is no purpose for the caboose but, they are looking to implement some scenarios that will give a need or requirement for the caboose, which, to me sounds great.
    I sold mine and I will repurchase when the gaming needs it. I do believe it would have been great for the Maintenance Of Way (MOW) to need the caboose to be left with the track and bridge repair team to use for rest and sleeping in while working out in the field.

    Just bought the Mikado since I just reached Robinson Gap and the Alarka Jct site. Best purchase I’ve made - the damn thing waltzed its way to Bryson with 30 cars and 1500 tons. Didn’t even break a sweat.

    Oh OH, you parked your Alarka Branch work cars across the road behind the station building! Shoulda broke the cars apart to clear the road... ;). Piece of cake when you have 3 of your 5 man crew riding in the caboose! Oh, wait! No caboose!

    The more I watch this game, I kind of hope there will be a ridiculous expanded version where you have the full line from Asheville to Murphy, but I know that would basically double to triple the file size, not to mention adding a route between Murphy, Hayesville, Franklin, and Back to Dillsboro. But something about the idea of running a huge express train from Murphy to Asheville just seems so exciting.

    I used the caboose when I run mix trains. When I only had one to two coaches. Now, I use it for MOW trains and for away of knowing where to split the train for switching moves.

    You don’t have to worry about the rivet counters with stuff like whistle types, because loco accessories like that are typically chosen by each RR, and since yours isn’t real, you can pick whatever you want. And you definitely need the cab.

    • @trynnallen
      @trynnallen 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ...rivet counters are everywhere. Especially when they find out that the loco is modeled after a RL loco. Why doesn't it carry it, that doesn't sound right, they messed up the reverb, etc. Sorry for the rant.

    That was a heck of a train, looking forward to getting up to that stage myself! I turned the mouse speed down to 0.8 (settings, inputs) and the outside view is much more controllable and stays quite tight when I rotate the camera.

    You ought to watch Utuber; Hyce. He does 3rd person one click coupling/uncoupling making Dutch Drops and flying switches at 10 to 15 mph. But he does turn a lot of his equipment brown and goes on the ground a lot! Lol! Hardly anyone on Railroader does 1st person uncoupling, too time consuming. Not a criticism, but a heads up... Great video, enjoyed it a lot!

    My first trip to Alarka Junction was hauled by the first Consolidation locomotive, with the repair train for the Wye. I made it with less than 300gal water remaining, so ended up using the starter 10-wheeler as a rescue... it takes a long time for that 10-wheeler to release the airbrakes on all those cars, moving it was surprisingly not so difficult. After dropping the cars off I then hauled the Consolidation back to Bryson for water and coal, and it turns out not to be quite so thirsty when running light engine!

    Any Factor of Adhesion below 4.0 was considered slippery. Steam locomotives struggled above 20% adhesion, so they were designed for FoA between 4.0 and 5.0. Pacific, Hudson and Atlantic types had higher FofA, whereas USRA Mike's and Santa Fe's were lower.

  • @robkiger3434
    @robkiger3434 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I found a neat tricks. You can use clt and mouse in the map to select a locomotive. It makes it easy to jump around the map to where I need to go.

    The C-55 Connie is probably the best mid/late game freight engine. With 12T/8500 Gallon capacity it has very good endurance, not to mention it pulls like crazy up a grade.

    Enjoying this series and loving this game. I have changed operations to using a freight drag and local engines to serve each section of the route. I went with the P43 Pacific (43,900 lb tractive effort). It was the most powerful large tender capacity that I could stretch for. It barely made it up the grade to Alarka Jct with 2000 tons of train behind it, down to 5mph at one point. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

    I found something even more useful for the camera - I thought I could move the camera in and out either with WASD or by scrolling the mouse wheel. Nope, the mouse wheel zooms the camera in and out. If you are zoomed out then rotating the camera swings the camera around in a huge arc, if you are zoomed in rotating the camera just spins it on the spot. You have to be zoomed out a little bit to get the camera above the ground, the higher your camera is the bigger the arc when you rotate it.

    So right about comments on "how" should have done stuff at Alarka JCT. Use it as a learning experience. Railroading is a lot of puzzles, and trying to figure out the more efficient way of doing things. Railroaders are lazy, speaking from experience, and try to do as much with as little.
    One question about the game. When the cars are on spot at an industry and unloaded, do you get penalized for not pulling them? Because in the real world we don't usually service a customer unless there is an out going load, or they have a new spot car.

    • @andrewreynolds4949
      @andrewreynolds4949 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A lazy railroader is a safe railroader, the more you have to walk for instance the greater chance of tripping

      I think your reputation goes down if you don't honor the contract. I've been servicing industries every day based on waybills, so I don't know what happens

    • @ceegnz
      @ceegnz 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's an interesting question though, the contract is to get cars to the industries. There's no timeliness bonus for getting cars back to the interchange promptly, I'm going to give this a go with one contract and see what happens.

      I haven’t seen any negative effects of leaving empties at the locations, I’ll wait until I have a new car at minimum, some times I’ll just add the new one and only take the empties when I’m out of space.

  • @cmd062
    @cmd062 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    If you are playing this as a game and don't care about trying to operate realistically according to the time period then get rid of the caboose, if you want to operate as close to reality as possible then you should be running all of you road freights with a caboose. Anything within yard limits doesn't need a caboose and if you run a mixed train with a passenger car on the end you don't need a caboose. I don't know enough about logging operations to know if you should or shouldn't use a caboose on the Connelly Branch but I run with one and use it as a shoving platform.

    I do not like the AI in this game. It makes no sense to me. You have to give them orders to do everything. It's more like radio control than actual AI.
    We should have crews that would be able to complete contracts on their own. All we should have to do would be to tell them what wagons to deliver and where to deliver them, and they should do the rest, from start to finish.
