  • In this 2nd part of the oak snare build series, I unclamp the drum after gluing, prepare for external milling, mill and sand the outside of the drum.
You'll surely enjoying seeing my headless body in front of a work bench, my snow blower, lots of garage clutter and ill fitting jeans. What a presentation!

Once again don’t worry about explaining everything to the viewers.... All you need to do is make sure we can see the operation....If you’re having a good time, so is the viewer🕺😅
Also, maybe adding a couple of dance moves to your repertoire 😎

Great router jig! I've never seen such router marks in the wood, they look like scratches ...
Can't wait for part three - may I ask for lower music volume because I cannot hear your explainations ;-)

Thanks for the comments! I am trying to get better at the video editing. The audio is especially tricky because I am only using my phone to video and the sound comes in at a pretty low level.

I'm making my first 30 segment stave snare out of walnut in a few days. As someone who has built quite a few snares, do you have any big tips pertaining to the cutting and the glue up process to give someone doing this for the first time? Any advice is appreciated. Awesome build!

Yes, take your time on the milling steps. I had a couple of these go bad because I didn't make sure my router alignment was good. In both cases I ended up with shells that were thicker at one end than the other. I've usually done fine on the outer shell milling, but the inner took me longer to get a reliable jig and I'm still trying to improve it. Walnut is a great choice. I've made and sold a couple of those with black nickel hardware, great look if you decide to go that way, but will be nice with chrome or brass too. Good luck!

    2 for 2. When is part 3?
The graphic when you fade from one scene to the next looks like a snare. Intentional?

Part 3 in the works. Should be much shorter so hopefully can do it within a week. Regarding the snare looking transition, I wish I were that clever! I was randomly choosing transitions in the editing software. Still learning how to use Openshot.

Are the knots not a problem?

Not really a problem. They were pretty small, didn't blow out during milling and I filled with black epoxy. So they add some interesting detail to the shell. I suppose if I was taking more aggressive passes with the router, they could have been trouble. I probably take about 1/16" per pass.

Hi Josue, I'm located in the US, Chicago area. I don't have any shells available at the moment. What size and what kind of wood are you interested in?
