The paint roller grill as a support for the thermoelectric fan eliminates the need to modify the fan to attach it to the heater. Great video combining several ideas! Thanks Dave.

You have to be careful because you can easily melt the wires in the fan. MR heaters are far hotter than wood stoves

  • @AdrepKeith
    @AdrepKeith ปีที่แล้ว +13

One change I would make is regarding the metal paint thingy. That metal could get so hot it could melt the plastic handle on the heater. I would purchase one of those asbestos plumbers cloths to put under the handle. You wouldn't need to use the whole cloth, just cut off a small piece to wrap around the handle. thanks for the informative video though.

the ele. current is actually created by the negative wire being attached to the heatsink & being cold & the positive wire being attached to the hot metal plate on the bottom of the fan body. the difference between the temp's creates a potiential electric current. it was discovered by a guy named peltier- so on the fan body is a peltier module. they can be bought on amazon around $10-15 and make your own fan, maybe salvage an old cooling fan from a computer or maybe from a hair dryer. i state these things in case someone can not just buy the ready made fan

I use a backpack camping pan/skillet set to cook food by just setting it on top of the grate/stove as it is mostly level. I use this heater to keep my hunting stand warm during the cold deer season, we cook everything from hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta, Mac and cheese, toasted cheese sandwiches, beef stew etc. It blows everyone's minds that I have a hot meal while I'm out hunting but when I have the kids along with me it's an easier sell for them to be able to sit all day if needed.

Me and my son both have the Mr. Buddy heaters (single tank) and we both mounted the Dual Fans to the top similar to the one you show. We use these in our hunting blinds and the fans blow the warm air towards our feet and lower legs and the rising heat warms the blind and we stay toasty warm while hunting in the cold temps. We keep 2 spare tanks in the blind so we can spend a few hours in them while hunting. Nice tip on the food prep. Might have to bring some hot dogs with us next time... LOL

Plug it in and turn it On.. A few more bucks but it you don't have a stove. Maybe but I don't want to share fuel for heat and stove. Mine are separate and for my stove I have a 5 gallon tank I appreciate good food. Luckily I have a place to cook I don't have to set that up . I'm working on a van conversion those are going to be part of that. I got a 10 inch thick mattress in there with a down comforter a small TV Music good speakers all over.. Then basics it's 8 cylinder with tilt cruise . It's been setting a few years I start and run it monthly. I passed most cars while loaded on the grape vine last time out. The van was full of Stuff as well hah. Only kidding I wouldn't do something like that, really.

One more Safety Lecture item - putting a cooking grate on the top of this heater will be unstable, and needs additional support to keep permanent grill marks / food scalds from your tent floor, linoleum, or feet! At least add a stabilizer prop leg under the end of this jury-rig cooking grate and tie the handle back to something stable. I believe this model has a pair of keyhole mounts on the back that allow for mounting on a pair of screws/nails on a wall, up off the floor. See the manual (of course) for recommendations. That maybe the best stability option, if possible!
FYI - expect "Bad Things to Happen" more often when your tired, cold, and hungry, thats my prior experience.

@@diyhvacguy The hoses are a must have item (along with the recommended screw-on filter to keep the Buddy jets from clogging) if you plan to get real run time on the heaters. Myself, its my garage heater and emergency home heat if the power goes out! Always have 3 or 4 BBQ tanks filled for winters. Its Dec 1 tonite, and 30 deg F and falling with Snow outside. Here its electric heatpump or wood fire heat only, and I hate chopping and stacking wood - bad back.

If you've ever been around propane powered forklifts, that what it smells like in our house when we've had to use our Big Buddy when our furnace went out. We both got bad headaches and I could taste the propane for several days. Consequently, I don't use it any longer. Had high hopes for it as an emergency heat source.

Good to know. Maybe keeping a window cracked to vent a bit? Some are probably more sensitive to others. Did it set a co detector off?

@@diyhvacguy it got to be too much for my wife before it got to me, so yes, different people have different tolerance levels. No, it never set off any CO sensors. If I remember correctly, I think it has a CO shutoff and we have a CO sensor in the house as well.

@@nickchapman1445 Hmm, I'll have to get the directions out and read them again. From what I remember, mine doesn't say anything about venting it when using indoors, just said it was safe to use inside. Regardless, it kinda defeats the purpose if you have to leave a window open and let the cold air pour in while using it.

I would advise against frying foods on the Buddy. Even boiling water or heating up a can of soup is prone to splattering and spills, then you’ll end up fouling the ceramics and/or the pilot light.

I've seen aftermarket pieces that clip on from China that aren't from that brand and think some are that are griddles and actual grills that clip on the front and that one had little legs for heavy stuff so it doesn't tip over

What is the handle on the Buddy heater made of? If it is rubber or plastic, I would think that as the grate heats up, it could melt the handle.

The way to cook with a buddy heater is with a dutch oven and a tripod. Otherwise you foul out the ceramic. Blow your ceramic surface out after each use or it off gasses the dust that collects on the ceramic surfaces and that can't be too good for you.

Yeah, been doing that for years with my heaters, a few short blasts of compressed air against the normal air flow works wonders for all types, especially fine passaged electric blower portables that can clog and become dangerous (especially if you have furry pets)! It also cuts down on that nasty burnt smell on start-up.

That must be a newer model thing, the ones I looked at years ago only had an add-on fan option. I would rather have it run on 12v though, from the accessory jacks in my SUV or Lithium jump packs. D cells are starting to be rare finds these days, except for commercial / pro-shop outlets.
