  • Mix your vocals - How to use EQ
    This is the second video of the MIX YOUR VOCALS series. In this series, I share with you my process when it comes to mixing a lead vocal. In the first video, I talked about the importance of Volume Automation before adding any plugins especially compressor plugins.
    In the second part of this series, I share with you how I manage vocal EQUALIZATION. Note that all vocal recordings are different, that’s why it is important to understand these steps to get good results and make your vocal sound professional.

    Do you have an eq pdf cheat sheet? thank you

    What about if you need to boost frequencies to add presence etc on a vocal track? Will it add emphasise the 's', 'sh', 't' and 'ch' syllables etc if you boost the high mids to add clarity?

    Why not use cubase built in eq or even the linear eq it has? It can do pretty much all fabfilter can. Thanks.

      Frequency EQ in Cubase is good, but I like the Fabfilter ProQ3 way better. Especially for Dynamic EQ th-cam.com/video/5EdMQ_WudQo/w-d-xo.html I do use the built in EQ for quick EQ moves on some tracks though

    Have you already mixed rest of the tracks or will you do it later after processing the vocal? When while mixing you should even process the vocals?

    I enjoy your videos from time to time. A great source for relevant teaching on how to actually use cubase for what it's worth. I gotta ask you tho - You plan to do something about the distortion with the S sounds? This is something I would try to eliminate before the vocal signal hits the mic cable :).

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! For the S sound, De-essing will help and adding a super narrow cut at around 12-13 k (something is happening up there that I don't like) will also help, compression will smooth things out as well. I recorded that vocal 6-7 years ago and for sure that wasn't the best mic selection for this singer :-(

    Why the automatic translation into another language does not work in this video.

    • @mixdownonline

      the automatic translation works on other videos? I didn't even know that

    Nice, simple explanation of the frequency areas where many issues usually are. A good place to start. Thanks again Chris for another great video.

    Speaking of high passing with the channel eq, which I do almost always. Keep the number right to the frequency in view. You can change the amount of cut from 6, 12, 18 to 24db.

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can... most of the time keep it between 6 and 12db

      @@mixdownonline I know, I just wanted to note that, if anyone needs a stronger or weaker cut. And these tiny buttons are often overseen :)

    theirs a better way to route your vocals ,
    'Make a mono bus ' and route your vocals to that bus
    you can hear the difference from stereo to mono
    your vocals will stand out a bit more.

    • @TheHirade
      @TheHirade 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the end, every mono track is a stereo track when mastered. Why do you think it would be more in front tho ?

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's correct @TheHirade ... @Youg Jynx do the test by exporting your mono vocal track to a Mono group to ST master out and export the same to a ST group to ST Master out... Compare both and you might see a tiny 0.1db difference which at this point is pretty much the same

    • @youngjynx
      @youngjynx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @thehirade
      you can hear the difference in the mix in the front that helps me . the vocals sound more full

    • @youngjynx
      @youngjynx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @chris selim
      you can still hear the difference during the process but hey we all mix different :)

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree mixers can mix differently and that's a good thing. I'll have to explain in a future video my routing concept for vocals. That will also vary from time to time. Thanks for your comment brother.
