  • Great speaker, one of my personal collection for a long time. I used these mostly as surround speakers. But they truly can stand on their own. They have a great deal of range, and really drop low when they go boom (though I always recommend Sub Woofers). I love them, and am only selling them after about 8 years of ownership. I will be upgrading (or side grading) to the Matrix series, which is only a tad bit more expensive on the used market.
    Pros
    * Kevlar lasts forever, and is a great material to invest in a used speaker.
    * Large speaker with a great bass response
    * British Made
    * Love the Looks
    * Great Value on Used Market
    * After 8 years of ownership, I will sell them for slightly more then I bought them for. AMAZING!
    Cons
    * Requires a stand to fully enjoy
    * The foam can get hard
    * Steel tweeters are a bit harsh.
    * Cat hair on speaker grills suck! /s

    Make the best speakers by mounting a completely open FR driver on top of a boxed woofer. As long as you basically do that, you can do what you like with them for the best sound. What I did is made cutaways on the cheap 5" FR driver and made a filter for it (but still basically the whole signal, except below 100 hz). And a large inductor on the woofer. The cutaways on the FR driver equilise the sound, making it way less shouty. Without the cutaways, try eq with with a crossover component filter. 😅

    2:35 It would probably sound better with the dent mark in it (after pulling the dent out with tape). The dome isn't as ridged anymore and moves with the signal easier. I reckon.

    I would bet that a kinked dome would make as much difference as cables. Both make a difference if you train your ears for diffences like when I design speakers (trying to get the best sound, by direct comparisons). Tiny differences are heard only on a/b tests! Never without a/b comparison cos your ears adjust to the sound. And that's a BIG factor in why audiophiles love their speakers so much. And that's why you NEED reference speakers when designing your own speakers. They stop your ears getting used to your (wrong) speakers. Like what happened to me before I spent 2 grand on reference speakers. Or get a soundproof room and all that gear. I chose my ears and my reference speakers and my Audiolab amp. Cheap and it works (even if I hate my B&W 706 speakers). They are still great for frequency level (especially bass) cos the bass varies by 7 clicks on the bass level when I walk arond my room. Need bought speakers to get a bass level. 😅 But my made speakers absolutely flog my B&W 706 speakers. Only a small detail, that is the voice sound is not "throaty" enough on my reference speakers. Not by a mile, and brass sounds like wooden instruments. 😅 I took my made speakers to a hifi shop for evaluation and they absolutely loved the made ones. 😅 They are open FR drivers on top of a boxed woofer. HFreqencies double in intensity when open (and sound like tweeters) with the highly modified open FR driver. And it's a dipole sound. Another reason they flog my reference speakers. It's an acoustic thing, more 3D!

      I appreciate you watching my videos. There are many that also claim that it wont make a difference, and doesn't measure different. I have heard dented, and I couldn't hear it. I could feel insecure though about it. Your channel is very cool. Thanks for watching!

    Please let me know what your tips for cats and your speakers/equipment. I will probably be remaking this video and will feature what I hear. Check out my blog for more speaker hints and cats.

      Use them for 15 years, sell them for what you bought them. That's my type of audio deal!

    Hmm...I do know one permanent way to keep cats off your equipment! This option also keeps them off the countertop, all furniture, the carpet, their feet, no more money spent on cat food, but you will need to invest in a shovel....eventually. How good is your swinging arm? Have you competed in any axe throwing competitions? How nimble is your cat? I'm sure you've figured out by now what I'm suggesting you do? Exactly, put an electrified plate on your speaker equipment and when the cat jumps on it, it will quickly jump off. This may cause some paralysis of the legs, keeping it from getting on the furniture or walking, but only for a while. You'll want a good throwing arm for that one time you cranked the juice up a little too high, which usually happens when you are high. (So I've been told). You'll use your axe-throwing skills to knock the kitty off when it starts cooking, and you'll want to be accurate or kitty-kitty will never be uttered again because you'll never get rid of that smell now baked into your equipment. Most cats have about 9 times to learn speakers are bad to climb on, and the shovel will be eventually important when your cat never learns because cats are stupid. (or it's because you fried it's brain from not working on your axe-throwing skills) After some time, you'll eventually say, "I never should have listened to that guy on TH-cam," and know I'll be shaking my head in agreement. But, after time has passed, you'll eventually forgive me for giving such bad advice. At that point is when I'll ask if you'd like to buy one of my 4 lb Teacup Shih Tzus (they're like having a puppy forever), and then I'll casually mention trading some speakers for a multi-channel amplifier. Let's just skip to that part since we know how kitty-kitty will play out.
    I've got a Marantz av8805a in my living room with 15 channels powered by an 8 and 7-channel Marantz and they're powering a Klipsch set of RF-63, RC-64, (4) RB-81ii, (2) RB-61 ii, (4) RB-25, (4) RB-51, plus (4) 15" subwoofers and 1 middle 12". In my bedroom, I'm trying to decide between the av8802a (that was in my main room) or keeping the av7705. The problem is, I traded 2 Marantz amps for all the above speakers in the main room, and now I've got another full 11.4 set of Klipsch, 9.2 M&K THX, 6.2 B&W DM602 S2, and a fully restored KSP-400 / K-6 series with matching KSP-300, and all have fully restored and upgraded amps. They were getting fixed when I made the deal for the 2 Marantz amps and all the Klipsch. I'm powering my bedroom with 6 2-channel amps and there's just not enough room. I've got some amazing subwoofers too. KEF AW1 (amazing bass), Velodyne's, you name it, I got it, except I was born with an inability to love cats. It's something I suffer with daily. Now it's your turn to share?

      Just to be safe, I want to disclose. I do not support your methods, only find them funny. Please, do not throw axes or electrify your cat. This is illegal, immoral, and wrong. But a bit funny.

    I owned the b & W 686s which i Ended up trading for some mellower sounding Kefs I wouldnt mind going back to em now & upgrading the Crossovers perhaps even sending them to G.R. Research for better or worse How about you?

      I went older with the MATRIX 80s, you can see them. They are a bit more than these, and they fit the price. The Focals are for sale they are my best, but they are very high in price and am starting a family soon. I'm still enjoying the Visaton Elevation 3s. I also got enjoying the Monitor R3s in the bedroom, and KEF LS50 Metas for my dailies. I will start playing with some of the others soon, like the Thiels and B&W concept 90s are on my todo list. Haven't been listening much, lately except passively.
      These 602s are great speakers, and I have sold the front two 604s for what I bought the entire 5.1 for, about 10 years ago. These are for sale, and are the last ones to go. I will miss them. I recommend Used, over 10 years ago to new. The value of used items is generally much greater than when buying new, and these cone-based speakers will live a hundred years (or more). Check out my other videos and subscribe. Trying to grow the channel. Furthermore, replace the faro-fluid on the tweeters is easy.
      I expect to make a few more videos shortly, and release them. I've been gone and want to cover some topics.
      I appreciate G.R. Research's videos and subscribe to his channel. G.R. Research seems good in their cross-over results and what I see of the graphs. He is enjoying the technology and creating a new market that many will enjoy. But I have no ears on experience with his gear. He charges money for his service, and to ship the items over, and it's not currently a service I want to try. I, personally, would just get a new used speaker to enjoy if I wanted more out of the speaker. Afterall, I enjoy experiencing the original gear as well. G.R. Research seems to do a good job at crossover design, but I haven't heard the results. He makes a few modifications that I am inexperienced in and would like to see if they actually make a difference. I may try some of them myself, someday, and see if it actually improves a pair of speakers. I don't always agree with him, and I haven't worked with him. Furthermore, I would like to AB his gear with a matched original before I make any statements about what he offers. Yet, I have no plans to make this happen. I wish G.R. Research all the luck with his business, and hope he finds success. I know very little about his products outside of the speaker modifications, so I can't make any claim right now about them. I know there is drama involved in some of his videos, but I don't watch it, so I can't speak on to it. It tends to get me to just change to a different video.

      @@newsboyaudio Danny benn very critical of b&w in the past. but I suppose hes goin a bit over board on them.. i dont think it will effect there Sales on there speakers so thats good! besides they have good resale value cause of there name

    • @newsboyaudio

      @@davidmorgen4558 Some of Danny critism is fair, however it's really about value. Danny's mods cost money as well, and better speakers may or may not be a better value. Most of Danny's speakers are kits and cost more then the lower tier B&W's. I've never heard them, though, so I can't judge what Danny offers.

    What are the size of the woofers? 6 1/2 or 8"s ?

      I’m sorry, I don’t remember. I believe they are the larger ones for the series and the same size as the larger speakers have. If I remember right they are the size in the 603 and 604. The 601 is smaller and I got the 600 and they are the smaller.
