I've owned Merc, Yamaha, Evinrude all 200-250s. I can honestly say there is no clear winner as far as longevity. When dealing with outboard 2 stroke engines, they are ALL hit or miss. Period. I've seen a guy have major issues with the Yamaha VMAX and another fella had the same exact engine, no issues still running till this day. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It's just luck of the draw in my opinion.

🙄 Is there no more pride in fixing your own stuff anymore? I've saved myself well over $100,000 in repairs through my life time. Ole timer once told me. "You can never build or fix anything cheaper than doing the job yourself". That goes with every project in life. The hydraulic trim assembly is not complicated to work on. 1 TH-cam video would have saved you all that labor and the mark up in price by the shop on those parts. Get the vmax specialty tools and fix your own stuff. My boat was rear ended by a guy with no insurance. I had it insured for actual value. They paid out roughly 20% of the $10,860 in damage. Cut me a check for $2600. I fixed the boat for $3,752.88

Dude, that many failures on one engine is crazy! Two suggestions; I have owned 2 Yammy Vmax 150’s, first one lasted 7 yrs burnt cylinder but may have been bad gas. Second one is a 2007, same engine just newer, couple months ago the block seized up on me. Yamaha did give me some money toward some repairs even after warranty was out. So never be shy to call manufacturer and ask about monetary help, including cars, trucks, mowers, etc.!
Second suggestion; if you still have that engine there might be some minute vibration causing the T&T caps to loosen, might even could cause other problems also? Tiny imbalance on prop, prop shaft, slight cavitation, etc.. I worked in a Chemical Plant 40yrs and vibration caused us a lot of equipment failures and costly repairs. Just suggestions. Hope you are able to find a reliable engine some day!

I did talk to Yamaha when their tech support and a mechanic couldn't figure out why the motor wouldn't run right. Was told it was either the ECU or all the fuel injectors needed to be replaced. Since they wouldn't help me on getting a good price for a new motor and they couldn't figure out how to fix the old motor, I just run a Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE now.

So the motor is reliable, but the trim is iffy. I'm about to buy 2007 v max. I'll fix trim, but I'm not a motor mechanic. Thanks for the info

For me yes, the trim motors were terrible. They could never figure out why the motor wouldn't run so I got a new motor, they said it was either the ECU was bad or all the fuel injectors. I didn't want to spend thousands on that old motor anymore.

Was just about to buy a ranger 198vx with the Vmax on the back. I’m glad I decided to walk away from the deal now, thanks!

Buy a Fourstroke. So much quieter and cost less to run, not having to buy 2 stroke oil.

You don't need the tool, just get a angle grinder disc change tool, works just as good.
