Computer Simulation can be a very powerful tool when applied to Construction Planning & Controlling. Construction planning is still typically done using static methods only which, although highly detailed, cannot allow stakeholders to explore fully and rapidly the ‘what if’ of projects and the effects of their decisions on the project objectives. Computer Simulation deals efficiently with complexities related to resources utilization, idle times, probabilistic nature of activities durations & costs. Computer simulation helps in complex decision making related to defining resource requirements (manpower, scaffolding, equipment, etc.) & utilization, especially in resource dependent / horizontal projects. Building Information Modeling (BIM) uses can also be expanded by utilizing BIM API (Application programming Interface) to fulfil several requirements in project control fields. The presentation provides the application of computer simulation and BIM in construction planning and controlling to enhance the project control function and to ensure efficient project delivery that is aligned with the project objectives.
