Very good analysis of Ben’s serve. One of my favourite players on the tour.

Ben Shelton is throwing MAXIMUM OF EVERYTHING into the serve 😱😱😱

I find the direction of the knees at load is the truest indicator of hip turn. Aliassime, Barty and Serena also get their knees pointed behind the baseline at load. Very few other step up servers do so.

I think you are missing a huge point. If you had a rear view, you could see how wide his back swing is and how far he goes past the vertical to keep the racquet face down--near 45 degrees. When he comes up with his knife edge, the racquet is at an angle, maybe 30 degrees to the ground. He contacts the ball at an angle too, and I don't think it is a kick serve either. Then the power comes through racquet (and other moving parts) acceleration (not velocity--check the physics equation--net force x delta t (time ball is in contact with racquet) equals mass (of tennis ball) x delta v (change in velocity of tennis ball)[m x delta v][change in momentum]. Net force is mass (sum of all the moving parts of his body and racquet) x acceleration) [when you multiply by time the ball is in contact with the racquet, it is called "impulse"]. Others do the same thing--check the videos Nick Kyrgios, John Isner, Camila Giorgi. Also, the foot movement is essential to developing a rhythm which I think you will agree becomes the kinetic chain.

I neglected to add that the power comes at the acceleration point just prior to ball contact as the arm rapidly pronates, in my opinion.

Given the degree of his "squat" (or load) the short height he achieves at contact is inexplicable, but that seems to be a trait of the pin point stance. Sam Groth look alike during the load.

What does he do differently for second serve?

  • @peterhaslund

Sure, hips and all. But notice he actually whips his arm like a badminton player. The only player I ever saw that could stand the physical abuse of that "technique" was Nadal, guess everybody else gets injured. For a truly smooth, truly fast serve watch Ivanisevic!

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that his serve looks almost identical to the fastest server ever: Sam Groth.

I Wonder if he will get injuries from this motion. The best serves have very little coils and focus more on accuracy rather than pace. Even Kyrgios who serves huge doesn't bend this much.
I find that if you bend this much its hard to keep the same motion over the course of a long match as your legs start to leave you

This guy's athleticism is just crazy! He's still bombing 140mph+ serve in the set 4 of US Open

As already pointed out in Meike Babel's very good analysis: Shelton has a huge internal sholder rotation. I believe this prevents him from getting injured by his serve.

On the clay court his right foot is dragging across the line

Fastest serve on the tour. Can't be wrong with that.

Sorry, but both serve should 100% be foot fault!

Stay away from it. It’s not real tennis.
