In its first three model years the Corvette was a very slow selling car. 300 units produced in 1953, 3,640 for 1954, and only 700 copies for 1955. Sales were so bad GM considered ending production and then in 1955 Ford came out with the Thunderbird. In 1955 Ford sold 16,155 Thunderbirds. GM was not going to be shown up by Ford so they doubled down on the Corvette. Eventually the Vette became the most successful American made sports car.

That's 116k in 2024 money... Executive's compensation has outpaced inflation that's for sure... But if you're the boss you can give yourself a raise :)

So, a man who is 45 in 1954 was born in 1909. Puts it all in perspective.

Slushbox Powerslide tranny, no rollup windows., no hardtop. If you live in rain prone areas, not such a great car. By 55, those things and the V8 made it attractive. 3 speed on the floor until 57 with a new 4 speed.

George bought it... Then the shit hit the fan when he arrived home. The wife asked where the kids were supposed to sit in it!
