  • Though this is a bit flashier than most of the other standard dealer fare, this was still designed specifically for the dealers - not the general public. Shows all the cool things about the new 1965 Marlin, along with a sexy girl oohing and aahing just enough to include sex in the product,

    I owned a '66. That car got more attention than most other cars I've owned.

      Yeah, one of my neighbors had one. I was about 10 and I thought it was the most futuristic vehicle I’d ever seen.

    I have 165 restored it 36 years ago neglected it restoring it for the second time my stepfather's first brand new car to paint on it last week

    Despite decent performance, numerous options, and overall attractive styling including the one year (1967) larger effort, the Marlin failed to catch on. The succeeding AMX Javelin program (1968) proved far more successful.

    When was the last time you saw a Marlin on the road?
    I can’t remember ever seeing one in person.

    3:35 Notice that everything is made in the USA in this still shot. The car, the men’s suits, the luggage and the golf clubs. All made in the USA.

      And...? Where's all-American AMC now? FYI, the "most American" car today is Tesla. If it wasn't for offshoring, we wouldn't be trading messages about this, and the clothes you're wearing would be from 1965. If you look like the pretty girl in the promo, I suppose that wouldn't be that bad.

      ​@@allwheeldrive The back of the Tesla has styling ques that resemble the AMC marlin. Too bad AMC did not survive. When I was a kid there were two neighbors who had Marlins. I remember they were blue and red.

      You had to be a pretty dedicated AMC nerd to spend your hard earned money on one of these things when there were so many much more stylish and better driving cars on the market at the time. The Mustang and GTO come to mind.

      Growing up in the 1960's made in the USA was seen on most products. If it said made in Japan, it was considered junk.

    I drove an AMBASSADOR across Australia from Melbourne to Perth in 1978,no problems except no heating.

    I was eleven when the Marlin came out and intensely interested in cars. I don't remember thinking it was too big, I never saw one next to a Mustang. But I do remember hating that parabolic side window shape. And the front end had the same look at the Classic, just like the first Barracudas had the same front end as the Valiant. That did not contribute to appealing to young buyers. My rejection of it was based on a very superficial reaction, but curb appeal is important in selling cars, just like with houses.

    @ 4:53 "....mounted in long-life chrome, diecast frames..." Regardless of make or model, "diecast chrome" would almost always start pitting eventually.

    The Marlin was the beginning of the end for AMC. They started to disconnect from their core market that trusted AMC for cheap, basic transportation, or, as dad called them, "cars for people who don't care about cars."

      But the market was changing, and AMC was seen as a company for old folks' cars. Sales in larger numbers were with the younger buyer and they were trying to change their image to improve sales numbers. Keep in mind old people did not put a lot of miles on their cars, so they only bought a new car when it was necessary. They kept their cars as long as they worked.Ols people see a car like a washer or dryer not as something to show off in.

    I think he said “Column mounted Manuel Shifter Standard” Column Shift in 1965 in a sport car? AMC!

      Well the standard brakes on Javelins and AMX were 10 inch four wheel drum brakes.

      Why not standard brakes on the Javelin were four wheel nine inch drums.

    We put a British diesel engine in one. Called it Marlin Perkins.

    in terms of its silhouette, the Marlin has similarities with the first-gen Porsche Panamera. Both are rather ungainly cars. One supposes the designers were saying, "yes, we want it to look sporty but hey, why not increase headroom for rear-seat passengers, even it it destroys the roof line?"

      Also the first-gen Plymouth Barracuda, with it ungainly huge window. Both cars appeared too heavy in the rear for those tiny bias-ply tires. Dodge's first gen Charger was more successful.

    AMC's attempt at flash and dash did not sit well with traditional Rambler customers and it failed to bring in new ones. Trying to match the big three model for model was impossible given their size. It has often been said that GM lost more cars through the cracks then AMC built. By 1967 AMC had to take out emergency loans to pay its bills. Unsold cars piled up in their lots production dropped 12 per cent. Annual loses were 76 million dollars which was considered an astronomical sum at the time. The Marlin never was a big seller as it was meant to be on a much shorter wheelbase of the American rather than the Classic. But management wanted it to be a six seater. and it threw the design out of proportion. Shame because now you read all of this love for the company but where were customers at the time?
