Roof chopping, customising and stretching the back of the cab - 64 Toyota Stout build.

  • In this episode, I deconstruct the roof and rear wall pieces and commence the roof chop and cab extension.
I ended up chopping it below the window, this was the window will stay proportionate.
When the roof is chopped, the top piece moves downward and the B pillar pieces need moving outwards at the base to line back up with the outside of the body. This creates a wedge of blank space which needs filling. Instead of filling the gap, I made some new upper a pillars and whilst doing so, I deleted the rain gutters, extended it 60mm, added a swage line and rounded the edge of the door opening off.
Whilst removing the rain gutters, I added a little subtle lip to the back of the cab above the rear window. To take away a bit of guesswork, I drew the back of the cab to scale on the computer and then printed the template. The technology is there so why not use it.
I also made quite a few new pieces to replace rust/ save plugging up spot weld holes. the lower corners were remade as they fell short after the body drop and body section.
In the next video I'll be filling in the back of the floor after the cab extension. Cheers for watching!

Artistry at it's finest. Hello from Edmonton Ab Canada. Why do you hammer the welds? Is that to relieve the metal so it doesn't change the shape?

For such a young lass to have such fine skills in dismantling a cab piece by piece and then to rebuild it is a master class standard of workmanship! You leave a few guys in this field of fabrication for dead. I can think of a few here in the UK and the USA (I am not even in their league) that are nowhere near as skilled. Obviously a lost of time, effort, money, dedication and discipline makes your skills shine!

Not “just” the skills in design, shaping and welding, but also that you take it all apart and work on every panel separately, unlike so many others who just cut a slice out of the pillars, leaving old rust inside, not welding up inner structures etc. This will be much more than just a show car, this is done right!

I just discovered you channel tonight, and I'm absolutely fascinated with your rare combination of excellent design, coupled with serious, old-school fabrication techniques. This build is amazing, and I just subscribed so I can follow the rest of the build!
