Why Games Workshop Has Me Cautiously Optimistic

    In recent months, I've found myself drifting away from Games Workshop games. I haven't been a fan of how they treat their customers/fans for a while, now, and it seems that our complaints had been falling on deaf ears. Now, though, they are doing some teams with Kill Team that genuinely have me feeling a little optimistic. Will that hold? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

    I've invested thousands on GW products over the years but haven't purchased a model from them in two years and refuse to buy 9th Ed 40k. I'm totally done with GW and the company they have become.
    The over pricing, the destruction of fan produced content, their business model of making you need more and more books to field you army is all just ridiculous.
    Now I'll only play previous rulesets that I own and One Page Rules. I'll only buy models for my armies from 3rd part creators and me and my friends also use our armies is a 40K based DnD campaign now.
    GW dosent care about their fanbase, only keeping them addicted to their over priced plastic crack. More people need to stop buying their product in order to force GW to change.
    This hobbey has never been more exciting than it is now the 3D printing age has arrived as well as the ability to find new skills and technique with TH-cam etc and more game systems on offer. GW will slowly be chipped away as fans grow tired of their business model and look else where.
    I love 40k, the lore, the setting, characters etc, but I hate what GW have become.
    Thankfully it's now easier than ever yo get your 40k fix and not have to give a penny to GW.

      I agree with everything you said. I suppose the only difference is that I haven't fully cut the cord, yet. Particularly with the skirmish games.

    You know what they say ' Cautious optimism is the first step on the road to disappointment'... I look at GW doing more along the lines of the bare minimum and pushing everything as far as possible to see how much they can get away with... Any consumer friendly directions are short lived at best...

      Past experience shows that there is a good chance you're right. For the moment at least, I am choosing to hold on to a little optimism. I recognize that may just be nostalgia from the fun I had playing 40k as a teenager talking, but for the moment, I'll hold out a little hope.

    I'm not holding out hope, they're trying to take legal action against 3DCults and the model makers on there right now, and with the recent price increases and the mediocre first year of Warhammer+, I'm honestly only buying product from them when it encourages interesting or positive decisions on their part, which is few and far between these days.

      I admit i might be setting myself up for disappointment. I hope not, but this may just be a blip. They do seem to be good at doing juuust enough to string us along thinking they may be doing things differently.

    YES! Finally someone who echoes my same concerns about GW and the way they treat customers, FLGS's, and the hobby community as a whole with the way their releases are handled. I think I found my new favorite hobby channel! It's nice to see people using products that aren't completely centered around Games Workshop. SO many other creators out there. So many other companies worth our time and effort and money. Thank you.

    Mostly the price rise during the pandemic was down to plastic pellets becoming scarce due to oil and distribution issues, not nice but it happens.
    They also paid their staff a good bonus and paid back the government covid loan at the same time.
    I would assume they are bunkering up due to the cost of power and general cost of living crisis the Conservatives have dumped on the country.
    I do agree that GW online content has often been the ginger haired stepchild, and let hope it continues to get better

    • @MTFTabletop
      @MTFTabletop  ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess my question would be why we didn't (and generally don't) see semi-annual price rises of the same magnitude from the other miniature manufacturers.
      Also, I don't recall other plastic goods going up by seemingly arbitrary amounts prior to the current inflation cycle.
      In addition, the cost of plastic is a miniscule portion of the real cost of GW miniatures based on my (admittedly limited) knowledge. The laegest costs, as I understand them, is in design, molds, and artwork.

    I just found out that Warhammer Fantasy was replaced by "Age of Sigmar" For fucks sake... Now it's... idk, nevermind. I'm just getting super into Wh40k. So.... I will still do so, and invest as much as needed. The money I used to spend on heroin I can now spend on miniatures and paint.

      The thought has crossed my mind. The thing these days is there are a LOT of other good options out there and virtually no consequences for walking away, unlike a personal relationship. I suspect if they don't actually get better, GW is going to learn that the hard way.

    If GW was listening to the fans:
    -Their hamfisted IP protection would end
    -TTS would return
    -GW would end their endless price hikes
    -Free rules online all the time
    -Embracing 3D printing
    -A very public apology for their behavior
    -Open comments on TH-cam

    • @MTFTabletop
      @MTFTabletop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You did a nice job laying out what irks folks. I can envision a future in which some of these happen. The way they treat people promoting their games is a big one for me. I had a rant about the IP takedowns and the hilarious irony thereof, but that may need to wait for a later video. For my part, I'd take progress on any one or more of these as at least a sign of progress. There's no way it happens overnight.

    • @xx_amongus_xx6987
      @xx_amongus_xx6987 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are definitely right with all this and these would not only be an improvement for the fans but for their business all-together. Not all modern businesses do what you outlined but those are very much a modern way of running IPs and brands. Right now we're seeing a lot of companies stick to the old model of making a profit but hopefully the brands we care about (GW) begin modernizing and improving their methods, or else they will eventually die out or stagnate for a long time. The customer is king

    Imo if GW wants community good will they should start with competent rules writers not ratbrained idiots who write rules that either make zero narrative sense or need to be fixed immediately upon release. Also delete the cesspool that is their social media accounts

    • @MTFTabletop
      @MTFTabletop  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't go nearly that far in describing their rules writers. There are absolutely some frustrating QA issues that need to be handled better, but these folks are given a monumental task of trying to write things with a semblance of balance against the dozens of other factions and subfactions. Most of the things that bother me seem to come from the admin/marketing/legal departments.
