- The Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple was constructed during the reign of Rajendra Chola I, the son of the renowned Chola emperor, Rajaraja Chola. The temple was built to commemorate Rajendra Chola's victorious expedition to the Ganges River in the 11th century, which earned him the title "Gangaikonda Chola" (the Chola who conquered the Ganges). It served as the capital of the Chola Empire for a significant period.
