The humility displayed by a man at the very top of his profession is inspiring. You can almost hear Bateman and Arnett's ego's being crushed. Dafoe talking about a simple life in Italy with two guys hard pressed to survive outside their bubbles. Meanwhile, Hayes is his ever likeable self, asking solid questions. Great combination of personalities. Really enjoyed this one.

I always love great conversations or in depth interviews with Wilhelm Defo. One of the few artist actors who's still around searching out challenging work & holds to the view that art should be provocative, challenging and at times uncomfortable along with entertaining . . . . Seems the polar opposite of what so much of the commercial world of film has become. Though he's realistic and honest enough to admit that one needs to work for a decent paycheck every now and then as well.
To Live and Die In L.A. The Boondock Saints. Wild At Heart. Antichrist. Pasolini. The Lighthouse. The Northman. Dog Eat Dog. etc. etc. Just an incredibly rich and impressive career.

34:58 it is exactly what I needed to hear today too. I just moved to Texas from Idaho and I'm experienced in my field of work but because my new company is under construction it has been nice to let that ego rest and the time I could be spending talking about myself is refocused to how can I be a positive guidance through their transition. ❤

    So many iconic performances
But I'll always remember two off the top of my head
Platoon when he realizes that Berenger was going to shoot him
And the dual personalities in the mirror during 1st Spiderman Tobey

You good Smartless folks better be thinking about riding this concept and these 3 legends for all it's worth.
I just sit and reflect after another intriguing in depth inside the biz interview. I think it's the fact that the interview team is so very talented and "adult" combined with all being so experienced with the product, and with all the moving parts that go into creating works of art.
Actors on actors in interview is tops in my book. Better than Actor's Studio type formats for me because they really show more of the entire human being. That's just my sense anyway. The expert way that each of these hosts form that bond of trust and respect with their guests is just spooky good. And they team up so well in pursuit of that goal. The goal being an enjoyable adult "fun" and interesting conversation. I'm squarely in the demo age and interest wise. The insider stories and shop talk aspects of the Smartless brand is pure gold for me, personally speaking. I am utterly hooked on this stuff.
But can Sean and Bateman smack down a little more often on Arnett? It feels like he gets a bit big for his britches now and then. 🤔 😆
Because this thing is a triple alchemy type deal to me. The chemistry and bond between those three special alpha dogs is just a kick in the pants to watch. And their immense talent is showcased in every episode. I don't even skip the ads anymore...their darn pitches and persuasive voices almost...almost inspire me to break my lifetime "no click through purchases" rule. That never happens.
What a guest...what an authentic and satisfying interview. Deft and respectful. Speaking of needing to be just that...When is Staff Sergeant Barnes comin' in? 😉
    🙏 Thanks for this.

Love you guys but you are not prepared for your downtown NYC guests like David Byrne or Willem Dafoe. The Wooster Group is a seminal post-modern+ theatre group from which Defoe’s approach to movie acting is informed. The interview could have been exponentially more interesting if you knew the history of your guest. Same with David Byrne - an amazing writer and filmmaker as well as musician. If you go beyond your LA crowd, please know your guest. You’re fabulous. Thanks.
