  • A cult classic with a killer song!
The Billie Jean Gang arrives at the mall to settle the dispute with Mr Pyatt, but instead Pyatt sets them up and we get treated to fun romp around the mall with Billy Idols 'Rebel Yell"

I grew up in Corpus, always came to this mall as a kid due to the dollar theater that was attached to it. It used to be such a colorful place but almost nobody was ever there, half the building was shut off and only a handful of shops remained. I still get so sad whenever I see urban explorer videos/pictures of the mall. Everything is destroyed and flooded now.

Same, I miss the dollar cinema and the cool food court. If you go to Bel furniture, it has some of the old decorations from the mall's nautical theme! I remember always going in there to look at the model trains upstairs.

@@jimtheedcguy4313 I loved the pirate ship (I think that was part of the food court? Correct me if I’m wrong, I was literally seven years old lol) where you could sit down and eat. Though when my dumb friends decided to sneak in there a year or so ago, they told me the mermaid at the front of the ship had been decapitated :(
They couldn’t find her head anywhere either.

@@purplelizard2460 yes! It was set up as a ship, and in Bel, which used to be Wilcox, which was Montgomery Ward, there was a ships helm at the top of the center staircase. I think it might still be there. But I grew up at Padre Staples mall since my dad worked at Smiths Guns for 11 years, therefore, family day we'd always go to sunrise since my parents didn't want to go where my dad worked all the time lol. I still remember Academy was where Cavenders is now, and Conns used to be an Albertsons! Do you remember seeing the Delta Tire commercials on TV??? "Donde es a compro con mucho gusto!"

i just stopped off at the Sunrise Mall while i was down around Corpus Christi. even though most of the stores are gone or different the flooring, the escalators, the fountains, the railings and the pillars are the same as they where back in '85. I even watched this video while walking around getting the same views the actors/characters got. It was surreal. :)

I visited this mall a few weeks ago. It's the Staples Mall in Corpus Cristi TX. It really went to hell. There's only like 3 stores open and they were closing down. I feel special for visiting an obscure filming location. Also, the day I went, they had an Elvis Impersinator for live entertainment.

25 years later and this mall is like a morgue. Gone are Joske's, Benjamins, Aladdin's Castle, the American Chocolate, Chip Cookie Company, Games People Play, The Record Bar, Video Concepts, and scores of other retailers. They stopped running the fountains and escalators to cut down on expenses. The mall has really been hit hard, just like the guy who gets racked by Billie Jean.

Replying 13 years in the future... and malls in general have only gotten worse. Clothing stores aside, almost every store is either a cellphone store or a purse store. Arcades are a thing of the past (and, no thanks to the pandemic, this is a reality that is also recently hitting overseas in Japan, which has for a long time been the last economic redoubt for game centers). Movie theaters are rare, and as for the malls which do have one... they only really have superhero movies and sub-par reboots of old franchises anymore. Software stores are non-existent due to that industry having practically gone completely online-only. Organized flash-mob shoplifting is a rampant phenomenon and, judging by their inaction, most cities' police couldn't care less.

    • @trevorknight9704
      @trevorknight9704 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Needs to be reformatted and renovated. Indoor amusement park. Putt putt golf etc. Stage for concerts and live entertainment etc. Cheese Cake factory. Yes put the Arcades new and vintage. Go cart park. Install a water slide. Maybe a gym. Night club for the spring breakers. Casino. Skate park. Rock wall. Talk to the developers of Bricktown in OKC. Or any developer The location is good. Hate for it to go to waste.

most of the time, there will be no one else in sight until I come across an open store. But, I have to say, it is really relaxing to walk around and look at, without all the loud crowds and stuff. I can literally sit on the staircase (the escalators aren't there anymore) and not be bothered.

I was always curious about the music in this part of the film about 19 seconds to about 1 minute and 20 seconds. The guitar riff 45 seconds in I really liked. I always thought it was flattering for this part of the film that they used such savvy music for that era since Billy Idol and Steve Stephens really knew how to get down in the 80s.

@tsntana I left Corpus about 1990, and I don't remember Diamond Jim's being anywhere else but Sunrise Mall. My father owned Sunrise Clock Shoppe, which was not far away, next to Cutlery World. Diamond Jim's lent us some storage space, and I remember going back there and seeing a stack of laser discs that they used for Dragon's Lair. I guess they had to be replaced every once in a while. Yes, Diamond's Jim's was cool. I remember the hockey game, Xevious, Bomb Jack, and Q Bert being there.

I went to the grand opening of Sunrise Mall on a field trip from Montclair Elementary back in the day. It was such a big deal it was on the news and everyone was so proud and happy to finally have a cool mall. It's fun to watch this scene because its abandoned now it's such a shame! Luckily Panjos is still across the street making the best pizza on earth!

Hard to believe this mall Sunrise Mall is gone and it goes to show you all the good and innocent times are gone too and there is nothing left. This mall and every mall is dying all across the US and its b/c of the damn internet. Kids today dont' even know how good we have it in the 80s and life was simple and fun back then and you could do what you want and say what you want nobody cared. I really miss the 80s and 90s and now everything is hell and people don't know anything. They super suck now. I miss the 80s and 90s and people were singing and dancing and you can't do that now.

And yes, not only did can they not afford to keep the fountains running, but they cannot afford security cameras for the whole place either, only for some of the stores inside. The bad management was due to most of the main, well-known popular stores had changed location. And, well, it all spiraled downwards from there. The biggest stores left, and so the smaller stores didn't

It's still very beautiful, which makes me a bit sad that nobody goes there anymore... The other mall across the street is constantly packed, and it looks like crap. Its basically just one giant long hallway full of popular stores like Abercrombie, Hot Topic, Spencer's, etc.

Malls have all but gone by way of the dinosaur. Very sad for us 80s and 90s kids. I spent countless hours at our malls, shopping, hitting the food court and arcade (Diamond Jim's and Aladdin castle), going to the movies, chasing after chick's and just generally having a blast. The internet killed the shopping mall. One day soon there will be only a few left and they'll be more like museums.
