Hello loyal friends, it's time to juice that algorithm with a HIGHLY OBJECTIVE, HIGHLY ACCURATE SoloRPG tier list that is beyond reproach. Sadly - for my enemies - it is also non-arguable simply because it was peer-reviewed by several independent sources and they all found it to be accurate, beautiful, and correct.

Thanks so much for including my work here! And you're right: Ker Nethalas is not a true RPG, it's closer to a boardgame, and that's 100% by design. I wanted a simple, straightforward loop, with some new ideas thrown into the mix. I also get what you say about Across a Thousand Dead Worlds, and that's something I'm addressing in the upcoming expansion: Across a Thousand Hollow Vaults. It has a tighter game loop, it's faster to play, and focuses more on exploration and character development.
Hey! I haven't had a chance to play. Ker Nathalas yet, but I've been looking forward to picking it up. Hearing that it was intentionally designed to be like a board game has me even more excited to try it. ❤

@@AceneDean yeah, you can even grab all the card supplements (it's a lot of cards, though, about 1,000) which allows you to play without having to check the book tables, making it feel even more like a boardgame! And I just released a second expansion for the game, so there's plenty of content for it!

"The Best at Solo RPG Games" makes me think of hypothetical competitive solo RPG events - who relaxed and enjoyed themselves more, who tickled their imagination more, whose journaling tickled their fancy more. I am reminded of the show "Morel Orel" which had a competitive praying bee.
My high school convention experiences demonstrate that 'being boorish and loud' is the only metric rpg competitions are judged.
I see no reason why they can't also combine it with a hot dog eating contest. For some reason they seem to mesh well.

Gosh, I love this channel! I'm sure I am in the minority here, but the rambling is my favorite part, so the idea of almost 40 minutes leading up to the tier list in take 1 sounds amazing. In saying that I think I have finally come to the conclusion that I enjoy the idea of solo-roleplaying, learning about new solo-roleplaying games, and watching others solo-roleplay, more than actually solo-roleplaying myself. Keep up the great work!

@@amanisalone Primarily Fantasy RPG (I DM 2 to 3 groups with regularity and try to have the minis and terrain I need for each event painted - I'm also often painting a character or two for a friend for fun), though last year I played Necromunda for the first time for about 6 months, and I just joined a AOS group for the first time about 3 weeks ago. That said, most of what I use are proxies and I recently 3d printed, painted and gave away an army to a friend so he could also join us at AOS. So I'm more of a death spiral enabler. I love creating and painting terrain as well. I've been eyeballing Trench Crusade and Gwynt, but the primary holdup there is I have no desire to organize a league and the player base is entirely death spiral located. I'm also going to ask the local nerd store if I can borrow and paint their boring grey plastic terrain for them. I like to paint while my daughter does homework, or when I have a few hours free on the weekend. Podcasts, verbal heavy videos, and audiobooks are my painting buddies.

Yep, you’re climbing higher every time on my board game list. The way you present your opinions and mechanics of games are so much more insightful than many channels that are dedicated to this genre. On top of that it feels like you’re sitting across the table and we’re just chatting about games. Keep it up!
Such a great point about having something behind you that adds urgency and pressure to your choices in solo play.
As someone wanting to jump into this hobby after staring at it (for a thousand years), i find the most peculiar and fascinating one to be thousand empty lights so I'll start there. Ill have to research ashen skies to see if i can handle such a thing. It seems fascinating.
I want something that balances the create and the play and draws me in makes me think and all, but also has a system that is easy to understand and follow. I do not want to be bogged down byball the tables unless they are if some use in the long haul. So now you have me interested in two solos to try that seem to be what i ask for. Not a pure dungeon or journal. So i can blend that and perhaps my own creative doodles and maps to it. I do like games i can come back to again again and find something new. Would love a relaxing one too. Anywho enough waffling. Thank you for the video!
There can never be enough waffling. I think that Under Ashen Skies can be done, it's a solid game that will give you a good play loop and also some expansiveness and exploration, but it is heavy. Thousand Empty Light is the best but you can only play it once for the first time...I have a video on it but ONLY WATCH A LITTLE before you play...don't want to spoil the experience. Speaking of, if you want a GREAT Thousand Empty Light Experience, I did do the voice acting for the audio transcript of the game, available on the @alfredvalley itch site as a downloadable zip file with the game: alfredvalley.itch.io/thousand-empty-light (the soundtrack is also THE BEST GAME SOUNDTRACK OF ALL TIME)
Everyone has a different balance of creative control vs game structure that they like,youll find yours! You gotta burn through a couple games to do it

4AD is my favorite game on this list and never worry about having an opinion cause you have just gotten another subscriber! I totally agree it’s more a board game of the rpg which is why I love it! I’m not the creative type and games like starforged and such give way to much leeway for me to have to think. I love dice rolling and expansive tables to tell me exactly what’s happening and milestone/leveling characters up. Thanks so much for the work you put into the video and can’t wait to explore your channel more!

I really like the notion of latency you introduce around the 20 minute mark while discussing scarlet heroes. I think that's a useful concept to have when discussing ttrpgs generally, and solo stuff especially.
For both Ironsworn and Starforged, don't forget that you start with two quests, and that's what moves you forward. My trick with it is to do one personal and another one global, and that does the trick of providing direction.

Comparing STA to Stop or My Mom will Shoot was hilarious. Though Estelle Getty isn't Stallone's actual mom, one could see how you'd take that as their on screen chemistry throughout the movie would make you think that.

4AD fans will say you need to get some of the expansions to fully appreciate what it offers. I have only just tried it a couple of times and haven't decided if it's for me or not yet.
True, and I do have some of them. I know it's well made and a tight game but I think ultimately there is a nostalgia there that carries a lot of people through the learning curve that I"m just not so interested in. But you're right, I need not give up on something valued so highly by so many smart people
@@amanisalone The expansions make it...OK. I feel pretty similar about it, it feels like it should be in a separate category.
4ad is a money sink, and it can get quite.... scattered... if youre not careful.ive spent many great hours with it though

I picked up Captain's Log based on your ST/40k mashup game, and have been playing in a homebrew setting. it's been fun, but I've found that between the time spent on world building and not wanting to fall behind on the journaling element, my actual gameplay is reduced to these 20 minute mini sessions. I plan to keep up the campaign, and I'm enjoying the gameplay I get, but pacing is turning into a major issue for me.
Scarlet Heroes is a tough one to rate. It's an absolute god-tier solo toolkit attached to a B-tier DnD retroclone. Frustrating.
It could just be that a mindset change could help. The lady on the Geek Gamers TH-cam channel says that everything you do in an RPG is playing… that creating worlds, characters, etc., is playing and is part of the enjoyment.
I think she’s absolutely right because I’ve created so much in the way of custom adventures over the years-in anticipation of running games with my friends-and much of that material never got “played” by a group. Nonetheless I enjoyed that creative process immensely!

We have similar desires so I was happy to learn more about a few more titles, especially because our opinions would have been similar. I started a campaign in alone in fear and was literally just explaining the my girlfriend yesterday, "for me, putting all the extra effort into rolling and manually adjusting values is paid off by the expansive and infinite opportunities that come with being able to change the game on a whim and truly become the character. I'd rather play alone against fear as a card based board game or video game." On point!!
Thank-you for the tier list. I immediately rushed to purchase Under Ashen Skies on Drive-thru, as it is exactly what I've been looking for (also, it's on sale for Halloween).
As someone who attempting to write a solo rpg your insight is invaluable, I found myself taking notes.
Might I suggest you place these games in their own subcategories of solo rpgs, (I believe there's more than 3) I've played some of these games and I always experience something different from each. I've yet to play a solo RPG that "does it all".
Just finished watching the video and wow... So much useful info interspersed with great humour! I didn't even know so many solo RPGs existed..
Anyway, I'll make sure to check out a few RPGs myself, maybe I'll even play some, who knows😅

Interesting! Sounds like I need to look into Thousand Empty Light, this is the first I'm hearing of it so I appreciate you bringing attention to it. I also enjoy most of what you have in your "A" Tier, but there are a few there new to me. Vaesen has been on my list to try for a while but maybe it's less of a priority if MAN ALONE has rated it as Mid. Good stuff!

Very happy to do it, I fumbled through the start of this in the dark and want others to have a little bit of light.
If you like Broken Shores Alex T has another game, called Sacrifice that's a similar hex crawl, but has more of a medieval setting and a D20 OSR style rule set that I really like a lot. Dark fantasy in the vein of Solomon Cain or Berserk for the younger crowd. There's a skirmish standalone expansion that goes along with it and a few zines. I'm just digging in but I'm already having a blast and looking forward to what happens next. Since it's OSR and has skirmish there's no shortage of other material you can fly in.

The main problem I had with Thousand Empty Light is the ending couldn't carry across the finish line for me. It gives enough to work off of for the first 3.5 sections and the last 1.5 just didn't land for me. I have that love/hate with some of the Mothership mini module endings where they drip atmosphere through the whole experience and the endings just kinda shrug apologetically at you. Yet I still enjoy the modules for everything else they do.
You're a guild manager in 4ad. It's roleplaying in that you can create a party and think about their interactions. I like the idea of playing with a party over solo adventures like 2d6 or d100. My character gets lonely :( The expansions only make it better too.

You might either create a new sub genre or add them to this list, but solo miniatures games, like Stargrave and Five Parsecs From Home, are also becoming popular. I mention them because they all seem to be played campaign style with heavy role playing elements.

Just watched a video on the base game. That's a mothership module, right? I'm so curious about it the aesthetic seems so different from mothership but the art looks awesome.
@@amanisalone Yes, although it's so expansive you might call it a mothership hack rather than module. The Solo Protocol for it is interesting (at least to me) in that it supports emulating the party instead of the GM like most solo rules do. I want to try it to practice my GMing skills.

You nailed my Starforged exp to a tee. Loved the session 0 world setup stuff and then just never had the push to keep going. Thats on me, but the whole setup process was kinda draining. I do plan on pushing thru someday and actually playing.
Try co -op it can help the blank page syndrome
It's like spending a year building a model airplane and then going on a hill to fly it and your hand starts shaking bc you're like, "I'm gonna break this thing and it took me forever to build it." I think maybe there should be less setup on the front end, have some of the generation of gameplay elements generated as you play so that you can build out the world more and more over time.
@@amanisalone That's a great analogy, lol. In vanilla group-rpgs, I kinda dig the light character creation with in-play fleshing out of stats and details. Sometimes its refreshing to start playing with a blank character and figuring shit out as you go.
I'm thinking of running starforged and or ironsworn in combination with Kevin Crawford's worlds without number/stars without number worldbuilding/quest generating and faction creation stuff. I think this would add that focussed direction. I love his faction turn ideas, which gives that 'stuff happening without me' vibe. A lot of work, I know, but I really like worldbuilding.

What are your thoughts on TOR and Strider Mode? Great list! What about Shadowdark? Just susbcribed!
I am conflicted on TOR and Strider. So I think Strider mode has some good rules, pretty standard for what free league does as far as solo adaptations. But it's actually the One Ring I'm torn on. Sometimes I look at it on my shelf and want to peel it off, other times I'm ambivalent. I do love that it's an IP game that isn't crushed by being part of the movies/books, it sort of takes place in between those other major events so you get more freedom. I'd love to try it again on the channel actually now that you mention it. Will I get to it though? That's the question. I'm very fickle. As far as Shadowdark, I hear good things but am not super tempted by the selling point of "tight OSR." The solo rules she put out are not worth it for those who have solo'd before as they are basically a few basic decision oracles and references to book places. I probably should pick it up, but I also feel like it would be better to wait for her next project and get on top of that rather than doing the 9,000th vid on shadow dark. Then again, like I said, I'm a big fickle baby so maybe I'll buy it tomorrow. Either way, hope you stick around and glad you're here!

I have to agree with the design pulling players in.
The 2014 5e PHB really sucks me in and.makes me feel like I'm looking into another world.
Yet I've had systems I pick up, skim through the pages, and say just don't feel it, and put them down. I don't even get them a chance because their layout alone is off putting time.
I actually like Four Against Darkness, but it really doesn't seem like it belongs on this list. There definitely is a genre of games like this, Solo Dungeon Crawlers: Four Against Darkness, Dark Fort, Basilisk!, The Black City, Twelve Years, Dungeon Solitaire, and others, but they have more in common with Gamebooks or Roll & Write games (or boardgames like you said) than they do with "proper" RPGs. They're almost pure mechanics, but with no to very little story/narrative (though there are expansions that add more story to it). It would fit better in an video about solo gaming in general than alongside solo RPGs.
I agree, Four Against Darkenss is not an RPG. Same as D100 Dungeon I think.
Where do you get Solitary Defilement. It's out of print everywhere. Is there a pdf version?
Skeletons was also one of my first purchases in the solo RPG realm and after I acquired a copy, I quickly read through everything and said, "I don't get it." I am hoping you are able to create a dedicated video on journal-style RPGs as they seem to be all the rage (and I still don't get it).

Have you tried Mutant Year Solo? It's on drivethrough & I think it's designed by the dude who wrote the official solo supplement for Forbidden Lands.

Oh man I have been DREADING fate...I read through the engine VERY early after it came out and was like "huh?" And then as time went on I am even more confused, not by the rules (which I think I might better be able to digest now than those years ago), but because it is the most polarizing system. Either people are like "greatest system ever, cannot be better than fate" or "system sucks and playing it is for wienie whistles". I don't want to be a weenie whistle but WHAT IF THAT IS MY TRUE NATURE???

Aw theres nothing to dread, ive just recently got into Fate and have been loving the game, they even have a solo engine to run the system, ya at first i found the rules were so simple they seemed complicated lol.
I find that some of the people who seem not to like it are power/tactic gamers that tend to come from DnD/Pathfinder, as its more of a narrative game that supports players taking control of the story.
Also it depends on which fate you use, i like Core rules, but Accelerated makes for good one shots

I wish you'd spent more time discussing what you actually loved about Sölitary Defilement; you spent several minutes saying all the things you disliked and then just ended with a "loved it, gonna play again" but I left that part of the review with zero understanding as to why I would want to play this
I dont play 4ad anymore and all it needed was a charisma stat!! 😪 thats all!! I spent sooo much money on it and i never got a system that just allowed for npc interaction 😢..i was gonna make my own mechanics but then i just gave up and moved on...maybe ill come back to it at some point
that actually sounds like a great hack and one that would make the game so much more textured! I bet if you made a five page supplement for this and uploaded it on a DriveThruRPG account, you'd make some scratch

I mean that is a real valid criticism. We aren't saying you don't like what you like. We are saying that on a list of your favorite vegetables, tomatoes don't fit the scientific definition. However they do fit the common usage definition so maybe that is alright.
